(SHNS photo by Nancy E. Hill / courtesy Chris Madden Inc.) By Chris Casson Madden Scripps Howard News Service The invitations have arrived in the mail and you probably have a shower to attend before the big day. It's the peak of wedding season across the country, and along with the festivities are the gift decisions we'll be making for the bride and groom. These days the couple can be a young pair just starting out or those entering a second marriage that could include the blending of families and households under one roof. Clearly, finding a special gift depends on the couple's tastes and lifestyle. The tradition of a china registry at a favorite department store will never go out of style, but today people also are coming up with some wonderful, creative alternatives. Similarly, around the country the bridal shower and luncheon are still alive and well, but now we also see his-and-her showers that often have a gift themes, such as home improvement items or kitchen appliances. The Internet also has made for even more alternatives for registries and gift options for friends and family. From Saks Fifth Avenue to Target, department stores are putting couple's gift registries online. So after a few clicks of the mouse and a handy credit card, you can select a gift from a registry and even have it wrapped and shipped. Stores specializing in home decor and accessories also are very popular places to register these days, including such national standards as Williams-Sonoma, JC Penney, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Pottery Barn and Crate & Barrel. Here are some of my ideas for wedding and shower gifts that will enhance any newlywed's home: Gift certificates welcomed: The variety of stores that offer gift certificates can help you stay within a budget and ensure the couple will choose something they want and need for their new home. You can choose from a favorite department store, specialty boutique or even a home improvement center. Timely gifts are a favorite: Whether it's a formal Waterford crystal clock or a funky urban design for the kitchen, clocks are a creative choice for a home. Be sure you know the design style that will work best for the recipients. Pampering gifts for breakfast in bed are a treat: Taking a cue from colors and linen choices mentioned in registries, look for bed accessories. As I have in my own home, consider a "bed desk." These can include features such as flip tops and side storage racks. They're prefect for reading and catching up on letter writing or for that special breakfast in bed. Framing memories is always a must: You can never go wrong with a beautiful picture frame for that wedding portrait or candid honeymoon photo. These are the visual memories that can last a lifetime, so why not frame them elegantly? Consider a trio of sterling silver frames in varying sizes, or a single large one engraved with the wedding date. If a couple has a more casual lifestyle, photo albums with acid-free paper are also a good choice for storing those treasured pictures. Enhance a tabletop: Take a look at the china patterns that the couple has chosen and you can complement them with accessories. Tablecloths and napkins are an obvious choice, but you can also choose candlesticks or napkin rings that will fit with their color and design scheme. A wonderful vase for fresh flowers is also a classic wedding gift, but look for something a bit different. A ceramic pair can also serve as sculpture in a contemporary living room, or a quintet of small silver bud vases can be used in a variety of ways. Use your creativity and learn a bit about what the bride and groom want in their home, and you'll enjoy the giving as much as they'll enjoy receiving your gift. birthday present. Me and
My Birthday Present My Birthday Present At A Glance Author rebecca Contact rreilly12@hotmail.com When It just happened Artist andres Studio monster Location san pedro, costa rica My birthday was on April 12th, but I found that I couldn't celebrate it as I was at the time involved in "Hairspray", my high school's musical for the year. My schedule was very hectic and I found that I had forgotten my birthday, and so had my parents. And so time passed, I finished the musical, and I decided that I wanted to give myself a birthday present. Me and some other friends involved in Hairspray found ourselves with nothing to do seeing as all of our time had been spent rehearsing. Yesterday I went with my friend Erica to the mall, and we planned on seeing a movie. We looked at our options for a movie, but our options consisted of idiotic movies, such as Miss Congeniality 2 and Son of the Mask, so we wandered around the mall for a while, had a few cigarettes, and then wandered some more. We were completely bored by this time, but I had to be there until 10:30 to wait for my younger sister who was there with her friends. Suddenly, Erica mentioned the fact that she had always wanted a labret piercing, and I decided on the spot that we should go and get pierced right now, that very day and get back to the mall in time to pick up my sister. I immediately called a cab so that we couldn't back out of it. We waited for the cab and shared a cigarette to calm our nerves, as my hands were already shaking and she said that she had the butterflies. I could relate. We were sitting in the cab and I tried to decide which piercing I would get. I wanted to get a vertical labret, but I had promised another friend that we would do that together, so that was automatically out. My tragus? I had already done my inner conch, and I wasn't in the mood to take care of another thick cartilage piercing in my ear. My nipples are also on the waiting line, but I'm waiting for my best friend to come down so that he can be there. Then it struck me... I should get my nose pierced! My father would kill me. This was to be my first facial piercing and I didn't know how he would react. However, my mother would most likely scold me, but secretly like it. So I decided just to go for it. I was doing it for me. It was my birthday present to myself. We stepped into the mall and I took Erica to Monster, a small store which sells clothes as well as does piercings and tattoos. I always loved the vibe of the store. I walked up to Andres and greeted him. I told him that I would like my nose done and that Erica wanted her labret. Erica wanted to go first because she was afraid that if she saw me do it first, she would chicken out. I'm glad it turned out that way because labret piercings hurt much less than nose piercings, and I didn't want her to be afraid. This was her first major piercing. So I held her hand as he did her piercing. It was done very quickly, and I was up. I sat on a metal stool and waited for him to retrieve the sterilized jewelry. A new needle in a package was produced, as well as many other utensils, including a toothpick so he could mark me. When he did, he asked me to look in the mirror to check and see if I liked it. It looked a bit high up to me, but he was the professional so I just let it go. He took out the needle and I gripped Erica's hand. I closed my eyes, and I felt him place the needle on my nose and break the first layer of skin. "Take a deep breath, and exhale." I was sweating. It was hot in the store, but I knew that I was responsible. "Inhale, Exhale." I tightened my grasp on Erica's hand. "Now take a deep breath and hold it!" Oh no! Panic sets in. He shoved the needle through my nose and man, did it HURT! My eyes were watering and my nose was burning. Then the burning subsided and I opened my eyes. I saw that in the mirror there was a needle sticking out diagonally in my nose. It looked so incredible! But then came the part that I feared the most. I've read on BME that putting the jewelry in hurts the most. It was worse than I expected. I think that the jewelry hurt more than the actual piercing. I was on the second day of my period, so my nose wouldn't stop bleeding. Andres explained it, but I can't quite recall his reasoning. I was too happy to pay proper attention. So Erica and I paid and then went to take pictures of our fresh piercings. I'm looking forward to taking care of it and waiting for it to heal so that I can change the stud. I would have preferred a ring, but that would most definitely be out of the question, both at school and with my parents. Now that I look at it in the mirror, I wish that I had told him to move it a bit lower down, but everybody thinks that it looks good where it is. Novint Falcon The Novint Falcon Product Overview Users hold the stylus, which moves freely in 3D, like a pen to touch and interact with virtual shapes and objects on the computer. The 3D Touch Revolution Feel the Difference Some innovations represent incremental improvements and some change the world forever. Consider how the invention of sound impacted motion pictures, or how graphics made the Internet what it is today. Novint develops groundbreaking technology that adds the third sense, interactive 3D touch, to the computer, fundamentally changing how people play and interact. With our introduction of the Novint Falcon, the first interface device to bring 3D touch to the consumer market, you can now feel objects and experience a realistic sense of touch on your computer for the first time. Touch a piece of sandpaper and feel its gritty surface - feel the force of a golf club as it swings and connects with a ball - feel and shape digital models and data. Novints patented technology brings a new level of realism to computing, inspiring an evolution in video gaming and a future of touch enabled products. The Novint Falcon, which is designed to retail for under $100, is the only consumer device to provide three-dimensional, high fidelity force feedback. Unlike any consumer force feedback product on the market, the Novint Falcon enables users to move right and left, forward and backwards, like they do with other devices, plus up and down. Users can now experience a full range of realistic touch sensations including shape, texture, weight and dynamics. The Novint Falcon connects to a PC through a USB port and its footprint is approximately 9x 9, comparable to a mousepad and most joysticks or peripherals. Novint has partnered with Lunar Design and Force Dimension in the development of the Novint Falcon. Please download our Product Overview for more information, including a product comparison. Whats in a name? The Novint Falcon takes its name from one of natures most powerful birds of prey. Moving gracefully through the air, in three dimensions, the Falcon outperforms existing force feedback joysticks and traditional mice, delivering high-fidelity, 3D touch and a realistic and immersive experience that surpasses existing point and click technology. With its effortless glide and touch interface design, and sophisticated haptic engineering, the Novint Falcon, like its namesake, is a natural predator of the mouse, destined to change computing forever. How the Novint Falcon Works Users hold onto the handle of the Novint Falcon, which moves left and right, and forwards and backwards, like a computer mouse, but which also moves up and down. The interchangeable handle, or end effector can come in many shapes and forms. As the Novint Falcon is moved, the computer keeps track of a 3D cursor. When the 3D cursor touches a virtual object, the computer registers contact with that object, and updates currents to motors in the device to create an appropriate force to the devices handle, which the user feels. The computer updates the position of the device, and updates the currents to the motors a thousand times a second (i.e. at a 1 kilohertz rate), providing a very realistic sense of touch. The 3 electrical motors are connected to the 3 arms extending out of the device, 1 motor connected to each arm. The 3 arms are connected to the devices handle. At any given cycle, or 1/1000 th of a second, the device can create a force on the handle in any direction of any magnitude, up to the maximum force. As an example of how one would touch a virtual object, when a 3D cursor touches a virtual sphere, there is a force normal (perpendicular) to the surface. The device therefore pushes in the radial direction away from the center of the sphere, proportional to how hard the user pushes against the sphere. The computer keeps track of the direction of the force (based on the position of the cursor) and the amount of the force, 1000 times a second which lets the user slide the 3D cursor across the surface of the sphere, giving it a consistent smooth feel. The effect is that the cursor, and therefore device, physically cannot move through the sphere, and it is actually a virtual solid object. When one looks at the Novint Falcon itself (rather than the cursor and sphere graphics on the computer screen), one can see the invisible sphere in the haptic workspace where the haptic device cannot move it is really there, and you can really touch it! Additionally, other forces and algorithms can be used to give the sphere texture, dynamic properties (i.e. it can bounce like a ball), deformability, or a variety of other effects. It is a truly amazing and revolutionary technology. 2005 Novint Technologies, Inc.
