How to Wrap a Birthday Gift - eHow.com Clear Instructions on How To Do (just about) Everything Web eHow.com Home Family & Relationships Center Family Life How to Wrap a Birthday Gift Try to be as creative as possible when wrapping a birthday gift. Keep the gift recipient's age, likes and dislikes in mind when choosing the colors and types of materials used in your wrappings. Follow these instructions to wrap most gift boxes. Steps: 1. Choose a wrapping paper appropriate to the gift recipient. Is the gift for a child's birthday? Your grandmother's birthday? Does the recipient have a favorite color? There are wrapping papers available to suit any gift recipient. 2. Choose coordinating ribbon, and either purchase a premade bow or make your own. See "How to Tie a Decorative Bow" in Related eHows for instructions. If you decide to make your own bow, purchase additional ribbon. 3. Gather your materials and lay them out on a flat work surface. A kitchen or dining room table works best, but be sure not to scratch the table's surface when cutting the wrapping paper. 4. Use a string or a tape measure to determine the dimensions of your gift box. For a rectangular box, measure around the box as if you were measuring a waist. Add 2 inches to this dimension, and jot down this number. 5. Measure the length of your gift box. Measure the height of the box, multiply that number by two and add the total to the length measurement. Write this number down. 6. Use a ruler or yardstick to cut a piece of wrapping paper to the dimensions calculated in Steps 4 and 5 and place wrapping paper face down on your work surface. 7. Position package, top down, onto paper so that you are able to bring lengthwise edges of the wrapping paper to the middle of the box. Center the gift box. 8. Bring one lengthwise edge of wrapping paper to the center of the box. Secure with tape. Turn the opposite edge of paper under approximately 1 inch and bring this to the center of the box as well. The turned-under edge should overlap the first taped edge. 9. Position box so that one short end is facing you. Grasp left and right edges of wrapping paper and push the sides in so that top and bottom flaps are formed. Make sure that the edges are pushed in as far as they will go without ripping the paper. Secure pushed-in edges to box with tape. 10. Bring upper flap down against the side of the box, making sure that flap is sharply creased at its folds. Secure flap against box with tape. Bring lower flap up against the side of the box. Crease and secure as you did for the upper flap. Repeat for opposite end of box. 11. Position package so that the seamless side is up. Affix ribbon and bow as desired. Tips: Consider using comics or newspaper to wrap your gift; or stamp or paint appropriate designs onto plain white or brown Kraft paper. Choose transparent cellophane tape for your gift-wrapping needs. This will give your package a more tidy appearance than can be achieved with other types of tape. Secure lengthwise edges with tape all along the box length - at the middle and both ends. Use several short pieces of tape rather than one long piece. Use a fabric-lined basket or a drawstring fabric bag to wrap your gift if it will not fit in a box. Warnings: Check the label on any package of gift-wrapping paper to make sure there's enough paper inside to wrap your gift box. If you are wrapping a very large box or several gifts, you may need to purchase more than one package. Don't choose gift-wrapping paper that comes folded into precut squares. It has deep creases, which can give your package a crumpled, untidy appearance. Opt for paper that comes on a tube instead. Don't forget to remove the price tag before wrapping your gift. Fill the hole with cotton, tightly packed. Put the base in warm water as soon as possible. Warm water will melt the sap and allow the tree to drink more easily. Birthday Present primary math
About Piggys Birthday Present home | view cart | top 10 sites | faqs | about us | contact us an engaging language arts and early math program about product standards & skills newsroom request information ordering information printable order form About Piggys Birthday Present primary math & language arts Piggys Birthday Present uses the timeless activity of dot-to-dot as a format for children to answer mathematics and language arts questions at their skill level. With each click of a correct answer, a portion of a picture is drawn right before their eyes. Once the entire picture is completed, students have the opportunity to color in the picture and place it back on the mural wall. Piggys Birthday Present is engagingnot just because the high quality graphics draw students into a magical world...and not just because they become instant artists. Piggys Birthday Present is challengingnot just because there are over 50 math and language arts activities...and not just because there are so many treasures to find. Piggys Birthday Present is successful because its engaging dot-to-dot format, whimsical environment, and teacher-created activities make building number and language skills fun! Sequenced progression of difficulty Math and language arts materials are presented in a sequenced progression of questions that begins with the simplest of concepts, appropriate for kindergarten children, and gradually becomes more difficult, ending with questions appropriate for second grade. Students first complete the dot to dot, then they get to paint in the picture. When its finished, the painting becomes part of a larger mural. Piggys Birthday Present keeps students engaged by taking advantage of one of the most important principles in educational psychologythe principle of distributed practice. This learning principle is harnessed systematically in the dot-to-dot activity: children first connect 10 to 20 dots within a picture by answering simple content questions, and then they are given a self regulated break while coloring in a picture. This systematic alternating between content work and art work provides a learn and play , learn and play rhythm that facilitates learning. The best part about Piggys Birthday Present is that students set their own pace. If students are experiencing success, they can go straight through all of the exercises and skip the coloring. Or, if studnets need a little more time, they can pause to color in the pictures or even do the same dot-to-dot over again. The opportunity for students to set their own pace increases learning potential. Piggys Birthday Present is divided into two realmsone focuses on numbers and number sense, and the other on letters and sounds of the English language. Once children enter the upstairs playroom, they can go down the 1,2,3 slide to play in the math section, or down the A,B,C slide to play in the language arts section. In the upstairs bedroom, student choose between the A,B,C slide, or the 1,2,3 slide. Language arts If children go down the ABC slide, they will find the ABC dot-to-dots. These are language arts activities presented in a series of five large murals, each containing 5-10 dot-to-dot pictures. Within each dot-to-dot picture, children connect dots in response to questions that test their language arts skills over a broad range of concepts including letter recognition and alphabetic sequence. Students then progress through concepts such as letter/sound association, beginning and ending sounds, sight recognition of simple words, spelling, abbreviations, and contractions. Click here to view a chart showing the cognitive framework of language arts skills . Mathematics If children go down the 123 slide, they will find the 123 dot-to-dots. These are set up he same as the ABC side, just using different murals and math content. Math concepts include numeral recognition, number sequence, comparisons of numbers, simple addition, subtraction, and finding the missing addend. Click here to view a chart showing the cognitive framework of mathematical skills .In addition, the numbers in the math dot-to-dot can be heard in several languages Spanish, French, Chinese (Mandarin), Italian, Japanese, and Indonesian! The first time students slide down the 123 slide they will see this mural. Piggy takes a trip to a farm and meets many new friends: a frog, a cow, a duck, a horse, and even another pig. The easy level teaches students number recognition from 1-10. The medium and hard levels teach students number sequence, 10-20 and 60-100, respectively. Click here to see a skills matrix for the Math Farm Mural. In all, there are more than 2,000 questions dealing with math and language arts that were taken from lesson plans of experienced teachers. When children play with Piggys Birthday Present , you can be sure they are practicing skills and concepts that complement your curriculum. Skills summary The Skills Summary feature gives teachers the content description for each mural at the easy, medium, or hard level. Students can work individually or in groups, and student work is always saved and recorded in the Skills Summary after every session.
