The Gift of the Magi THE GIFT OF THE MAGI by O. Henry One dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all. Andsixty cents of it was in pennies. Pennies saved one and twoat a time by bulldozing the grocer and the vegetable man andthe butcher until one's cheeks burned with the silentimputation of parsimony that such close dealing implied. Three times Della counted it. One dollar and eighty- sevencents. And the next day would be Christmas. There was clearly nothing to do but flop down on theshabby little couch and howl. So Della did it. Whichinstigates the moral reflection that life is made up ofsobs, sniffles, and smiles, with sniffles predominating. While the mistress of the home is gradually subsidingfrom the first stage to the second, take a look at the home.A furnished flat at $8 per week. It did not exactly beggardescription, but it certainly had that word on the lookoutfor the mendicancy squad. In the vestibule below was a letter-box into which noletter would go, and an electric button from which no mortalfinger could coax a ring. Also appertaining thereunto was acard bearing the name "Mr. James Dillingham Young." The "Dillingham" had been flung to the breeze during aformer period of prosperity when its possessor was beingpaid $30 per week. Now, when the income was shrunk to $20,though, they were thinking seriously of contracting to amodest and unassuming D. But whenever Mr. James DillinghamYoung came home and reached his flat above he was called"Jim" and greatly hugged by Mrs. James Dillingham Young, already introduced to you as Della. Which is all very good. Della finished her cry and attended to her cheeks withthe powder rag. She stood by the window and looked out dullyat a gray cat walking a gray fence in a gray backyard.Tomorrow would be Christmas Day, and she had only $1.87 withwhich to buy Jim a present. She had been saving every pennyshe could for months, with this result. Twenty dollars aweek doesn't go far. Expenses had been greater than she hadcalculated. They always are. Only $1.87 to buy a present forJim. Her Jim. Many a happy hour she had spent planning forsomething nice for him. Something fine and rare andsterling--something just a little bit near to being worthyof the honor of being owned by Jim. There was a pier-glass between the windows of the room.Perhaps you have seen a pier-glass in an $8 flat. A very thin and very agile person may, by observing his reflection in arapid sequence of longitudinal strips, obtain a fairlyaccurate conception of his looks. Della, being slender, hadmastered the art. Suddenly she whirled from the window and stood beforethe glass. her eyes were shining brilliantly, but her facehad lost its color within twenty seconds. Rapidly she pulleddown her hair and let it fall to its full length. Now, there were two possessions of the James DillinghamYoungs in which they both took a mighty pride. One was Jim'sgold watch that had been his father's and his grandfather's.The other was Della's hair. Had the queen of Sheba lived inthe flat across the airshaft, Della would have let her hairhang out the window some day to dry just to depreciate Her Majesty's jewels and gifts. Had King Solomon been thejanitor, with all his treasures piled up in the basement,Jim would have pulled out his watch every time he passed, just to see him pluck at his beard from envy. So now Della's beautiful hair fell about her ripplingand shining like a cascade of brown waters. It reached belowher knee and made itself almost a garment for her. And thenshe did it up again nervously and quickly. Once she falteredfor a minute and stood still while a tear or two splashed onthe worn red carpet. On went her old brown jacket; on went her old brownhat. With a whirl of skirts and with the brilliant sparklestill in her eyes, she fluttered out the door and down thestairs to the street. Where she stopped the sign read: "Mne. Sofronie. HairGoods of All Kinds." One flight up Della ran, and collectedherself, panting. Madame, large, too white, chilly, hardlylooked the "Sofronie." "Will you buy my hair?" asked Della. "I buy hair," said Madame. "Take yer hat off and let'shave a sight at the looks of it." Down rippled the brown cascade. "Twenty dollars," said Madame, lifting the mass with apractised hand. "Give it to me quick," said Della. Oh, and the next two hours tripped by on rosy wings.Forget the hashed metaphor. She was ransacking the storesfor Jim's present. She found it at last. It surely had been made for Jimand no one else. There was no other like it in any of thestores, and she had turned all of them inside out. It was aplatinum fob chain simple and chaste in design, properlyproclaiming its value by substance alone and not by meretriciousornamentation--as all good things should do. Itwas even worthy of The Watch. As soon as she saw it she knewthat it must be Jim's. It was like him. Quietness andvalue--the description applied to both. Twenty-one dollarsthey took from her for it, and she hurried home with the 87cents. With that chain on his watch Jim might be properlyanxious about the time in any company. Grand as the watchwas, he sometimes looked at it on the sly on account of theold leather strap that he used in place of a chain. When Della reached home her intoxication gave way alittle to prudence and reason. She got out her curling ironsand lighted the gas and went to work repairing the ravagesmade by generosity added to love. Which is always atremendous task, dear friends--a mammoth task. Within forty minutes her head was covered with tiny,close-lying curls that made her look wonderfully like a truantschoolboy. She looked at her reflection in the mirrorlong, carefully, and critically. "If Jim doesn't kill me," she said to herself, "beforehe takes a second look at me, he'll say I look like a ConeyIsland chorus girl. But what could I do--oh! what could Ido with a dollar and eighty- seven cents?" At 7 o'clock the coffee was made and the frying-pan wason the back of the stove hot and ready to cook the chops. Jim was never late. Della doubled the fob chain in herhand and sat on the corner of the table near the door thathe always entered. Then she heard his step on the stair away down on the first flight, and sheturned white for just a moment. She had a habit for sayinglittle silent prayer about the simplest everyday things, andnow she whispered: "Please God, make him think I am stillpretty." The door opened and Jim stepped in and closed it. Helooked thin and very serious. Poor fellow, he was onlytwenty-two--and to be burdened with a family! He needed anew overcoat and he was without gloves. Jim stopped inside the door, as immovable as a setterat the scent of quail. His eyes were fixed upon Della, andthere was an expression in them that she could not read, andit terrified her. It was not anger, nor surprise, nordisapproval, nor horror, nor any of the sentiments that shehad been prepared for. He simply stared at her fixedly withthat peculiar expression on his face. Della wriggled off the table and went for him. "Jim, darling," she cried, "don't look at me that way.I had my hair cut off and sold because I couldn't have livedthrough Christmas without giving you a present. It'll growout again--you won't mind, will you? I just had to do it. Myhair grows awfully fast. Say `Merry Christmas!' Jim, andlet's be happy. You don't know what a nice-- what abeautiful, nice gift I've got for you." "You've cut off your hair?" asked Jim, laboriously, asif he had not arrived at that patent fact yet even after thehardest mental labor. "Cut it off and sold it," said Della. "Don't you likeme just as well, anyhow? I'm me without my hair, ain't I?" Jim looked about the room curiously. "You say your hair is gone?" he said, with an airalmost of idiocy. "You needn't look for it," said Della. "It's sold, Itell you--sold and gone, too. It's Christmas Eve, boy. Begood to me, for it went for you. Maybe the hairs of my headwere numbered," she went on with sudden serious sweetness,"but nobody could ever count my love for you. Shall I putthe chops on, Jim?" Out of his trance Jim seemed quickly to wake. Heenfolded his Della. For ten seconds let us regard withdiscreet scrutiny some inconsequential object in the otherdirection. Eight dollars a week or a million a year--what isthe difference? A mathematician or a wit would give you thewrong answer. The magi brought valuable gifts, but that wasnot among them. This dark assertion will be illuminatedlater on. Jim drew a package from his overcoat pocket and threwit upon the table. "Don't make any mistake, Dell," he said, "about me. Idon't think there's anything in the way of a haircut or ashave or a shampoo that could make me like my girl any less. But if you'll unwrap that package you may see why you had megoing a while at first." White fingers and nimble tore at the string and paper. And then an ecstatic scream of joy; and then, alas! a quickfeminine change to hysterical tears and wails, necessitatingthe immediate employment of all the comforting powers of thelord of the flat. For there lay The Combs--the set of combs, side andback, that Della had worshipped long in a Broadway window.Beautiful combs, pure tortoise shell, with jewelledrims--just the shade to wear in the beautiful vanished hair. They were expensive combs, she knew, and her heart hadsimply craved and yearned over them without the least hopeof possession. And now, they were hers, but the tresses thatshould have adorned the coveted adornments were gone. But she hugged them to her bosom, and at length she wasable to look up with dim eyes and a smile and say: "My hairgrows so fast, Jim!" And them Della leaped up like a little singed cat andcried, "Oh, oh!" Jim had not yet seen his beautiful present. She held itout to him eagerly upon her open palm. The dull preciousmetal seemed to flash with a reflection of her bright andardent spirit. "Isn't it a dandy, Jim? I hunted all over town to findit. You'll have to look at the time a hundred times a daynow. Give me your watch. I want to see how it looks on it." Instead of obeying, Jim tumbled down on the couch andput his hands under the back of his head and smiled. "Dell," said he, "let's put our Christmas presents awayand keep 'em a while. They're too nice to use just atpresent. I sold the watch to get the money to buy yourcombs. And now suppose you put the chops on." The magi, as you know, were wise men--wonderfully wisemen--who brought gifts to the Babe in the manger. Theyinvented the art of giving Christmas presents. Being wise, their gifts were no doubt wise ones, possibly bearing theprivilege of exchange in case of duplication. And here Ihave lamely related to you the uneventful chronicle of twofoolish children in a flat who most unwisely sacrificed foreach other the greatest treasures of their house. But in alast word to the wise of these days let it be said that ofall who give gifts these two were the wisest. O all who giveand receive gifts, such as they are wisest. Everywhere theyare wisest. They are the magi. Return to Christmas Poems and Stories Hypertext format ©1996 Rosemary (Rosie) Winters rosiec@night.net . All rights reserved.

Editorial Reviews Amazon.com The producers of the American Pie movies pushed their luck with a third slice of their lucrative raunchy comedy franchise, and American Wedding cooked up surprisingly well. It's the sourest serving of Pie , with half of the original cast missing, and there's something undeniably desperate about comedic highlights (involving dog poop, a lusty old lady, two strippers to offset the absence of Shannon Elizabeth, and the ill-advised use of a trimming razor) that arise more from obligation than inspiration, on the assumption that another penile mishap is guaranteed to please. And yet, that's just what this movie does for devoted Pie -munchers: It gives 'em what they want, especially when the notorious Stifler (Seann William Scott) nearly ruins the frantic nuptials of Jim (Jason Biggs) and his band-camping sweetheart Michelle (Alyson Hannigan). Eugene Levy and Eddie Kaye Thomas also return for some reliable comic relief, but the one who's laughing most is three-time Pie writer Adam Herz--laughing loudly and often, all the way to the bank. --Jeff Shannon --This text refers to the Theatrical Release edition. Marshall (North Fork, CA USA)- See all my reviews After watching this movie I am even more convinced that the original "American Pie" film was a fluke....it worked....the other's in the series suffer from trying way too hard. This film has all of the usual actors in their roles with Jason Biggs and Alyson Hannigan on their way to the altar. So while the women plan a wedding the "men" run around town still in search of sexual pleasure in all of its most inane of forms. Stifler (Sean William Scott) is full of his typical gross antics, this time with dogs, dog waste and a focus upon the only thing he seems capable of understanding.....sex. While most of the silliness and surprise of the original "Pie" film worked that same vulgar effort misses sorely in this film, basically just grossing people out with the worst of gags and a really stupid and entirely gratuitous T&A scene that could have easily been thrown on the editing floor. The filmmakers were smart enough to stay with Eugene Levy, Molly Cheek, Fred Willard and Deborah Rush as the parents who birthed all of these nincompoops! The humor found in the older actors is the only redeeming quality of this movie. Maybe on the next "American Divorce," something will change! --This text refers to the DVD edition Was this review helpful to you? ( Report this ) 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful: A Lot Twisted and Really Funny , January 9, 2004 Reviewer: Lonnie E. Holder "What! Me worry?" (Sullivan, Illinois United States)- See all my reviews I really should dislike this movie, because the comedy is even more disgusting and base than the previous movies in this series, but when the movie is funny, it's hilarious, and I couldn't stop laughing. Be warned, however, that much of the humor comes from gross situations. In this edition, Jim Levinstein (Jason Biggs) asks Michelle Flaherty (Alysson Hannigan) to marry him. The big moment is to happen in a very nice restaurant. Jim hints that he wants to ask Michelle a very important question, and his hinting about is misinterpreted by Michelle, who crawls under the table to do what she thinks Jim wants. In the mean time, Jim's dad, played by SCTV alumni Joe Levy, shows up and sits in Michelle's chair, unaware that she is under the table. Michelle goes unnoticed until Jim's dad mentions the wedding proposal, which causes Michelle to bump the underside of the table. Jim jumps up, his pants are down, and it's embarrassment and pandemonium. As funny as this scene is, it gets better, or worse, depending on how you look at it, from there. The movie ends up being a series of gags from beginning to end, that are both funny and often disgusting. Steve Stifler (Seann William Scott) is often involved in many of these scenes. In one scene Steve and Jim are in the library with a dog when an accident with a cake happens. When Jim's dad opens the library door to bring in Michelle's parents, Steve and Jim appear to be in a very bizarre position with respect to the dog. You'll have to see this one to understand it or believe it. There are another pair of scenes that are related involving a gay bar, a bachelor party, with Stifler involved, of course, and Michelle's parents. While not every moment of these scenes are funny, they are in several places, and I found myself laughing all the way through the scene where Jim is supposed to be having dinner at home with Michelle's parents. Stifler manages to get himself invited to the wedding, and even manages to convince Michelle's mother to let him carry the wedding ring. Unfortunately Stifler manages to lose the ring, which a small dog then eats. How Stifler gets the ring back is simultaneously funny and gross. While Stifler acts like the jerk he is for much of the movie, near the end we see Stifler make a mistake, and then pull out the stops to correct his error. For just a moment we get to see Stifler actually act like a human, and the movie turns out all right. I watched many of the extra features on the DVD. The two features I thought were the best were the deleted scenes and the outtakes. Watch them after seeing the movie. I gave this movie three stars even though it was a laugh-fest all the way through. Much of the humor is gross and disgusting, and the situations used to get the laughs are totally unrealistic and bizarre (well, none of these have ever happened to anyone I know). If you enjoyed the first two "American Pie" movies, you'll enjoy this one as well. Definitely not a family movie and many adults will find portions of the movie a bit too bizarre to be enjoyable. However, for those who like Mad Magazine and can handle gross jokes, this movie is a blast. --This text refers to the DVD edition Was this review helpful to you? All we are left with is a surgically enhanced topless stripper played by the ex wife of one of those Beverly Hills 90210 brats. This movie is NOT funny and the gags either fall flat or disgust you. After you watch this movie you will be left wondering how on Earth Finch manages to hold his breath underwater for the seven minutes (on average I have read) required to keep Mrs. Stiffler happy? --This text refers to the DVD edition Was this review helpful to you? ( Report this ) A solid end to one of the funniest film franchises in recent years. , July 31, 2005 Reviewer: thedudeman69 "thedudeman69" (Powder Springs, GA)- See all my reviews American Pie has had the akward teenagers getting laid for the very first time. Now, they are all grown up and they all have their own jobs and are going to other schools. Jim then announces that he is planning to marry Michelle and then the gang comes together for the very last time, with the exception of Stifler. Stifler doesn't know that he isn't invited and goes around having the thought that he is involved in the wedding. Jim cannot have the words to tell him that Stifler actually ends up saving the wedding in spots and becomes a unlikely hero and the book closes on the American Pie saga. When I first heard that there was going to be a third American Pie, I had high expectations. My expectations were met with this hilarous film that closes out the film triliogy. But, I was suprised that the gang was cut in half and alot of the original cast didn't return for the third one. But, they managed to keep the best parts about the films. I thought that it was solid comedy at its best. It is dirtier, filthier, and full of cuss words. It's what made it very good. Sean Willam Scott basically carried the whole film on his shoulders and made the most laughs in the film. His character basically stole every scene that he was in. He made me and everbody laugh uproariously. Stifler was given the whole movie to shine and he took that chance and made one of the most hilarous comedic performances in recent history. He can really carry a film but was never given a chance to, up until now. In closing, American Pie has made us laugh with the famous Jim having intercourse with the pie and having sex for the first time. The third film closes out the series with a bang and makes us rememeber what it was all about all the way to the first film. I had a wonderful time watching these films and I hope you had one magical time with the American Pie saga. I know I did. --This text refers to the DVD edition Was this review helpful to you? ( Report this ) Just a quick review , July 3, 2005 Reviewer: Genesis - See all my reviews American Wedding was the first Pie movie that I had seen (I wanted to buy Animal House, but it only came in a double pack with this movie, so I bought it anyway), and let me tell you...it's by FAR the best. One of the things I love so much about this movie, is that there is never a dull moment. It hooked me from the opening music, to the nostalgic conclusion. It really showcases Seann William Scott's talent, and after viewing the first two movies, I just can't understand why they were so succesful without all that Stifler action. Another plus (which many think of as a bad thing) is the fact that characters such as Vicky, Nadia, and Oz are gone. That really made the movie for me. I just didn't like those characters, and I thought they brought the first to Pie's down. They're just so boring, and ditzy, and, honestly, repulsive. I barely got through American Pie, and American Pie II. This is a fabulous movie, and you had better buy it, because you'll be sorry if you don't. --This text refers to the DVD edition Was this review helpful to you? As thoughtful as flowers, but more durable, a Teddy Bear Gift with a personalized Gift Card will express your feelings to a loved one in a very special way. We will place your voice recording inside your cuddly messenger, add a hand written card and wrap your gift in a very attractive package with instructions to the recipient to Squeeze Me, I have a Special Message just for you . Hear what our Customers are saying... I ordered the "that'll do pig" for my friend for her birthday. I recorded a little song for her over the 1-800 number and had it delivered to her office. She told me that she was having the worst day, and then the pig arrived and she was really happy! She played it for everyone in the office and called me the minute she got off of work to tell me that it was the best gift she had ever received. Unfortunately I can't see the stuffed animal since we are 1200 miles apart, but it really made her day and therefore you guys made my day. Good Job! Customer comments "Dear folks,In today's culture of complain about everything and get your money back, it's not very often that someone takes the time to say thank you. Well, i would like to right that wrong! On Tuesday i ordered and paid for a star name from your website. I was informed that it would take upto five working days so was not expecting delivery until next week. Imagine my surprise when the postman delivered it this morning (Thursday) just two days later. This was purchased as a wedding gift from my four year old daughter to her Aunt & Uncle as she is their little star and also their flower girl. The whole experience of buying from your website (and subsequent prompt delivery) has been such a breath of freshair. Keep up the good work and i look forward to buying from your site again."
