It's about the appeal of the posse and coma etiquette. It's about importing and exporting. It's about sneaking a peek, and seeing the baby. It's about this, that, and the other. TV Guide ranked Seinfeld the best TV series of all time. It has become the master of its syndication domain. Its most devoted fans can quote each episode chapter and verse; their absorption of each scene's minutiae anything but a trivial pursuit. With such fervent devotion to the show, and demand for its DVD release, series creators Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David could have easily just OK'd a bare-bones set containing nothing but the episodes. Not that there would have been anything wrong with that, but instead, the creative team came together to create extensive and encyclopedic features that make this four-disc set buy-worthy. The candid and revealing audio commentaries and interviews, deleted scenes and original episode promos, and optional "Notes About Nothing" pop-ups are as irresistible as a Drake's coffee cake. It's always fun and instructive to return to the humble beginnings of a series that became a pop culture benchmark. Here are Kramer's first not-so-grand entrance, Jerry's first contemptuous "Hello, Newman," and Elaine's first "Get Out!" shove. But what is most revelatory about the episodes from the first two seasons is what Jason Alexander, during his commentary for the episode "The Revenge," calls a "sweet quality" that somehow redeems these characters' more base instincts. The third season's--for want of a better word--the charm. The show has found its misanthropic voice (by season's end, a fed-up Elaine tells herself, "I gotta get some new friends"), the ensemble has a firmer grasp of their characters, and the writers rise to the occasion with episodes that have entered the Seinfeld pantheon, including the Seinfeld equivalent of a Very Special Episode, "The Boyfriend," with Keith Hernandez and the J.F.K. parody, "The Library," featuring Philip Baker Hall channeling Jack Webb as library bookhound Bookman, "The Pez Dispenser," and "The Keys," with an L.A.-bound Kramer winding up on Murphy Brown . Michael Richards, especially, comes into his own this season as Kramer. The first two seasons built up the mystique of this "man-child"/"parasite." So while he was absent in season 2's now-classic "The Chinese Restaurant" (in which Jerry, George, and Elaine wait in vain for a table), he is now out and about with the close-knit, albeit dysfunctional, trio. Julia Louis-Dreyfus has some of her giddiest golden moments, zonked on painkillers in "The Pen," or, as a bored party guest in "The Stranded," telling an obnoxious bride-to-be that "Maybe the dingo ate your baby." And don't get us started on Jason Alexander as George, series co-creator Larry David's neurotic and angst-ridden alter-ego. To paraphrase what Julia Roberts said of Denzel Washington, we don't want to live in a world where Alexander doesn't have an Emmy. The "Inside Look" episode intros offer fascinating insights into this singular show that subverted sitcom convention. We learn that even the most outrageous episodes, such as "The Pez Dispenser," were inspired by real-life events. Especially telling is Alexander's observation that Jerry never really socialized with the other ensemble members. This has extended to the commentaries: Seinfeld pairs with David on some episodes, while Alexander, Richards, and Dreyfus team up on others. They are gracious to the guest stars and extras, and mostly mum on Jer. All of this, of course, is yadda yadda yadda to Seinfeld fans, whose patience for the show's DVD debut has been amply rewarded. As Elaine screams in the third-season episode, "The Subway," "It's not nothing, it's something!" --Donald Liebenson Description Seinfeld Giftset (includes Seasons 1-3, Limited Edition Script, Monk's Salt & Pepper Shakers, Playing Cards) Spotlight Reviews (What's this?) Re-Gift set worth it! , November 27, 2004 Reviewer: Schtinky "Schtinky" (California)- See all my reviews I've noticed that for once both the Product Details sections and the Editorial Review cover the features of this DVD set very well, mentioning all the episdoes and extras, leaving my review free to be short and less boring. If you are a Seinfeld aficionado like I am, get the ReGift set. The script is nice and bound like a book, complete with handwritten notes by Larry David. There are extras on each DVD, all eight CD's from seasons 1,2, and 3. The salt and pepper shakers are great, and complete with a miniature napkin holder too. The playing cards are fun (and useable), with a picture of Kramer on the Joker, Jerry on the Kings, Elaine on the Queens, and George on the Jacks. Season 1 and 2 come in one box, and season 3 in a separate box, each with an separate episode guide inside. This is a very nice set and worth spending the money on. After all that, well, Seinfeld is Seinfeld. Now you can enjoy all the classic episodes we all love without those commercials inbetween from all the taping we use to do on TV. The DVD's offer the option of "Play All" or selecting individual episodes, a feature I really like in program sets. In particular, I really liked the extra called "Kenny to Cosmo" where a picture of the real Kenny Kramer is shown, an old neighbor of Larry David from a long time ago, and the resemblance is striking. Larry David even got the original Kramer to participate in the interveiws on this piece. Great extra. Seinfeld is still one of the funniest shows available, although I watch little to no television, Seinfeld and even its reruns is one of my exceptions. The DVD set is a must for any Seinfeld fan, and a great starter for anyone who is interested in getting deeper into this cult classic. Enjoy! Was this review helpful to you? Another Gift Set Coming Soon! , September 14, 2005 Reviewer: Teiah "Teiah" (Ruralsville, PA USA)- See all my reviews Loved my first Gift Set, which included Seasons 1-3 of the series! I can't wait for November 22, 2005: Sony is releasing the second Gift Pack, which will include Season 5 and 6 (also available as separate seasons). [...] Gift set will include: * Complete Seasons 5, and 6 on Region 1 DVD * An Exclusive Replica of the "Puffy Shirt" that Jerry wore on The Tonight Show. * Reproduction of a hand-written script from "The Pilot" (Episodes 4.23/4.24) by Jerry Seinfeld Seasons 5 and 6 include some of the most hilarious episodes of the entire series: The Puffy Shirt The Bris The Lip Reader The Non Fat Yogurt The Masseuse The Big Salad The Label Maker The Fusilli Jerry And many more. I would have a hard time picking a "favorite season", so I won't do so, but I will say I'm counting off the days until November 22, and I hope Amazon updates their information soon regarding Season 5 and 6 soon. (They currently state there are no plans for the DVD release, but rest assured, it IS coming out in November, [...]); Was this review helpful to you? ( Report this ) You Can Get This Box Set With the 4th Season Instead , September 13, 2005 Reviewer: James N Simpson (Gold Coast, QLD Australia)- See all my reviews It may interest you to know if you have a multizone DVD player or one that can play PAL (European, UK Australian, New Zealand etc) format DVDs that this gift set sold in America with the first three seasons instead comes with the Emmy winning fourth season in these countries. If you already own the first three seasons and just want the playing cards, script, Monk's diner ketchup and mustard bottles salt and pepper shakers than this may be a great alternative than doubling up on the DVDs you already have. I found that although these bonuses aren't of the greatest quality they are a nice bonus and you can use the box they come in to store all the seasons released so far in as they all fit nicely with room left over. In the gift box set or on its own either the 4th season or the 1st, 2nd and 3rd seasons of Seinfeld are a must own on DVD. Was this review helpful to you? ( Report this ) 11 of 14 people found the following review helpful: The box set is only a gimmick. Save your money and buy the DVDs individually , June 27, 2005 Reviewer: Andrew Parodi (Gervais, Oregon United States)- See all my reviews Please note: I am giving a 1-star rating to the overall "Seinfeld Limited Edition Gift Set (Seasons 1-3 with Original Script, Salt & Pepper Shakers, and Playing Cards)." The episodes themselves are great 5-star affairs. I just wanted to give a heads-up to prospective buyers that this box set is a bit of a letdown. The salt and pepper shakers are miniatures that stand about three inches tall, the so-called "original script" is a cheap miniature photocopy of a script (and is hardly legible), and as for it being signed, well, think again. It is not literally signed. What you really get is a photocopy of Larry David's signature on a small and useless photocopy of a script, with photocopies of illegible scribings by David throughout the script. If you want a signed script, I'd suggest looking elsewhere for one that is literally signed in-person and has a Certificate of Authenticity. And the playing cards are small and useless as well. I know this box set is very attractive. Obviously, that's why I bought it myself. But it really is quite a disappointment once you open it up. I recommend buying the DVDs for seasons 1-3 individually. You will save about thirty bucks. Was this review helpful to you? Its legal, if you follow the rules, and asking for cash even meets the Emily Post test for politeness. By Bankrate.com June is the busiest month for weddings, and a forest's worth of invitations either already has been mailed or soon will be sent. A lot of couples want money for wedding gifts. A wedding-day cash infusion can make putting a down payment on a home easier. With prices appreciating rapidly in much of the country, lots of couples need all the help they can get. There are formal and informal rules governing gifts of money to help newlyweds buy a house. First, the informal rules: Is it OK to ask one's wedding guests for money? "It's not rude to request money as a wedding gift," says Peggy Post, author of Emily Post's Wedding Etiquette. "However, it's extremely important to ask politely." Peggy Post is Emily's great-granddaughter-in-law, the wedding etiquette expert for WeddingChannel.com and the main spokesman for the Emily Post Institute. She says one of the most common challenges that couples face is how to request money as a wedding gift. Doing so is acceptable, if done politely. If you seek down-payment money, get the word out through family and friends, Post recommends. Just don't include that info in the same envelope as a wedding invitation. "If you are asked point-blank what you would like for a gift, you might say, 'Whatever you choose will be wonderful, I'm sure, but money for a house down payment is on the top of our wish list,'" Post says. It's OK to say what it's for Go ahead and tell people what you want the money for. Who knows? If you let people know that you plan to spend the money on a down payment, rather than on a honeymoon in Tuscany, they might be more willing to open their pocketbooks. Wedding guests who insist on giving you yet another toaster or wicker picnic basket or a set of rosewood corn holders should be thanked anyway, even though they aren't helping you buy a house. "You should always accept any gift graciously, and remember that the choice of what to give really belongs to the gift giver," Post says. With the etiquette question out of the way, that brings up how to get the money from your guests' pockets and into the hands of the folks who eventually sell you their house. It's not simple, because mortgage loan programs have differing rules on the use of gift money in making a down payment. So know the gift rules Generally, you are expected to be able to make a down payment of at least 5% from your savings, excluding gifts. But what if you are too impatient to wait that long? Some mortgage programs allow you to use gift money if you can't scrape together that 5%. Loans insured by the Federal Housing Administration allow you to use money from gifts to make a down payment of as little as 3%. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the two biggest purchasers of home loans, offer similar programs through lenders. Fannie Mae's program is called "Flex 97" and Freddie Mac's is called "Alt 97." If there is a problem with these loan programs, it is that they limit whose money you can use. The FHA, Fannie and Freddie allow you to use money from family members. In the FHA's case, givers have to be members of your "immediate family." It's up to the loan officer to figure out who is family and who is immediate family. What about friends? Can you use gift money from, say, the woman who has been your mother's best friend since kindergarten? Technically, no. The money has to come from family (or from a nonprofit or government agency, but they don't give wedding gifts). It wasn't always this way. In 1996, the FHA encouraged lenders to offer "bridal registry accounts," where couples could stash gifts from friends and family. "Then, when the newlyweds purchase their new home, the money will be available and documented through a lender-supervised account," the FHA said. A few lenders responded enthusiastically, establishing account programs specifically for newlyweds complete with gift cards that could be returned to the bank with a check enclosed. One such lender is SunTrust Mortgage, a subsidiary of SunTrust Banks. Through SunTrust Mortgage, you can open a bridal registry savings or checking account at SunTrust Bank. When a wedding guest makes a deposit, the bank sends a card to the bride and groom to let them know. Ready to find a mortgage? "When they're ready to go ahead and make that first home purchase, they access those funds and we get a mortgage for them -- and we hope they remain a SunTrust banking customer," says Cheryl Nolda, senior vice president of marketing for SunTrust Mortgage. In the last few months, about 500 brochures have been given to prospective couples, Nolda says. The lender usually sees an upsurge in interest in the two months before June and October, which tend to be the busiest months for weddings. Despite their success at SunTrust, bridal registry accounts never really caught on. You can always open a regular old savings or money market account to hold your down payment fund, but you might need to document where the money came from. That's easy enough when the money comes from your paycheck. If some of the money comes from gifts, be prepared to document the source. Encourage gift-givers to give checks from their personal accounts. And don't forget to write those thank-you notes.
