American colleges and universities need to recognize the fundamental importance of the secondary schools, says Anthony W. Marx, the president of the college. Education is the best tool we have for making the world a better place, and Amherst College is pleased to support the work of education at its foundations. Barry Del Castilho, the town manager of the town of Amherst, says that the gift is part of an effort to close a $1.7 million budget gap facing the town, schools and libraries for fiscal year 2006. Amherst Superintendent of Schools Jere Hochman requested $171,400 to replace, repair and maintain computer and communications equipment for the elementary schools. The college's gift is made in recognition that the college benefits from good schools in the town, says Peter Shea, the treasurer of Amherst College, and fits with our mission of education. Shea says the college likes to target its gifts to the town that way, realizing that it frees up other money for the town to spend on other priorities. Del Castilho puts it this way: By providing support for this more or less specific, high priority item in the elementary schools' capital request, the college's contribution prevents cuts in town, school and library services. Founded in 1821 for the education of indigent young men of piety and talents, Amherst College is now widely regarded as the premier liberal arts college in the nation, enrolling a diverse group of approximately 1,600 young men and women. Well known for its academic excellence, Amherst is also consistently ranked among the very best schools in the country in terms of accessibility: The college's financial aid packages are consistently the most generous in the U.S., and among its peer universities and colleges Amherst has the greatest economic diversity. Diversity, in its broadest sense, is fundamental to Amherst's mission. Thats right! On September 8th, Google announced that it was adding the Internet guru Vinton Cerf to its staff as Chief Internet Evangelist. Cerf has been hailed as, one of the great technology leaders of our time, by Google CEO Eric Schmidt. Vinton, who often goes by Vint, was made popular several decades ago when he helped co-design the TCP/IP protocols that eventually aided in the development of the architecture of the internet. Cerf brings with him experience like no other. Along with his development of the TCP/IP protocols, he has worked with MCI in technology development, eventually putting them on the internet map; he spent several years working with the Corporation for National Research Initiatives; hes a recipient of the coveted A.M. Turing Award, hailed as the Nobel Prize in computing; hes the Chairman of the Internet Corporation For Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN); and hes working on the Interplanetary Network, a project with NASAs Jet Propulsion Lab to extend the power of the internet to neighboring planets. Cerf joins Google with the tasks of helping Google build its overall infrastructure and architecture for the next generation. But those tasks are probably just the tip of the iceberg for the famed technologist. Speaking on his new position at Google, Cerf said, Google has already made tremendous strides in making access to information on the web a reality for users across the globe, but we're still in the Internet's early innings. This announcement is no doubt an excitement for Google. It means bigger things on the horizon. One has to wonder what Google has up its sleeves. Only time will tell and Cerf will be there when it happens. Many donors choose to designate their annual gifts to the College's Fund for Excellence. The Dean of the College annually determines the priorities for this fund. In recent years it has supported our minority student recruitment efforts, enriched student leadership programs, and enhanced technology training for student and faculty. Annual fund dollars can also be designated to the William Chandler Bagley Scholars Program. Entirely funded through private gifts, this program enables us to provide merit-based scholarships and fellowships to some of our most talented students. During 2002-2003 academic year, 37 students directly benefited from this program. Wherever you designate your annual fund gift, you can be assured that your donation is going directly to support the research, teaching and service missions of the College of Education. With no minimum gift, this is a great way to begin your investing in the College of Education. Endowed Funds Endowed funds are gifts large enough to generate yearly income. The principal remains intact through investment and only the interest is used. Endowed funds are attractive because they guarantee that financial resources will be available for years to come. Generally, endowed funds are named in recognition of the donor or donors. The size of the donation to establish a permanently endowed fund is determined by the purpose of the gift (i.e. scholarship, professorship, etc...) as well as by current financial market considerations. To learn more about creating an endowed fund you can visit the University of Illinois Foundation web site or contact one of the College gift officers. Current Use Gifts Current use gifts can be put to use by the College immediately upon receipt from the donor. Examples might include a newly endowed scholarship, a one-time gift to purchase new computers for one of our departments, or a donation to one of our Annual Funds. When you hear the words current use, it basically means a gift that can be put into immediate action. Deferred Gifts Deferred gifts are ones that are designed to be put to use at a future time. While these gift agreements may be made at any time, the execution schedule of the donation is the result of careful planning that integrates the donor's charitable gift into his or her overall financial, tax, and estate planning objectives in order to maximize the benefits for both the donor and the College.
