It is the simplest and most frequently used method of gift planning because of the flexibility it provides the giver. It allows a donor to commit a gift intention while keeping control of the assets in case they are needed during life. The College is pleased to acknowledge bequest intentions, and in certain instances, confirmed bequest intentions may be credited toward campaign or reunion gift goals. With or without a gift provision, an up-to-date will is one of the most important documents we all need to maintain. With it, your intentions will be clearly and legally carried out. Without it, you risk intervention by the state in the final settlement of your affairs, without regard to your intentions for loved ones or other personal interests. When Mrs. Emily Post penned her first etiquette book in 1922, she offered a guide to appropriate anniversary gift giving for the first, fifth, tenth, fifteenth, twentieth, twenty-fifth and fiftieth years of marriage. Gifts in the early years of marriage were small remembrances, or tokens, such as paper (1st), wood (5th), and tin (10th). In later years of matrimony, gifts gained value, including crystal (15th), china (20th), silver (25th) and gold (50th). Mrs. Post commented on the light-hearted nature of early anniversary gift giving, saying "the paper, wooden and tin presents are seldom anything but jokes. Crystal is the earliest that is likely to be taken seriously by the gift-bearers." By the time her etiquette tome was reprinted in 1957, Mrs. Post commented on the growing importance of wedding anniversary celebrations in America and the greater trend toward gift giving by family and friends. She reported that the traditional gift list had been expanded to include more anniversary years, and that modern alternatives to traditional gifts had become socially acceptable. The traditional and modern anniversary gift guides have changed very little during the past half-century and include recommended gifts for each of the first fifteen years of marriage and for every five years after that. One gift giver facing the fourteenth anniversary of her sister and brother-in-law was stumped by ivory. For the previous thirteen years, she had used the traditional list as her guide. Giving from the traditional list had, in fact, become her own tradition. She was not about to let it end.
