Third in the list of most-hated birthday presents is bath salts, followed by decorative plates and tight-fitting clothing. Eight out of 10 Americans (82 percent) said it is sometimes difficult to find an ideal birthday gift for a friend or family member. While the average U.S. family spends $750 per year on birthday presents, half of all birthday gifts are never used. Americans are wasting millions of dollars buying unsuitable birthday gifts which are never used. Even gift vouchers make you look as though you have not gone to any effort to choose an appropriate birthday gift, said Shlomo Shaul, publisher of Star Stories personalized horoscope books. "I got so many scented candles and bath oils one year, I thought my friends were trying to tell me I stunk," said one research participant. The full list is available at: www.star-stories.com I happen to LOVE scented candles, but usually only Yankee Candles, which smell GREAT. I also like bath salts. I do not wear col ogne since I am nursing. Since star stories are trying to sell a product, I am not sure how much faith to put into this story. Still, I have to wonder. Last Christmas, my MIL gave me a scented candle for my present. My SIL, who drew my name in the family exchange, gave me TWO scented candles. My husband gave me two scented candles--my only Christmas Gift from him. What does this say about me? Written by hestiahomeschool . (Link to this entry) This entry has 7 comments: ( Add your own ) Hi, I got your kind e-mail while I was also gone. I was visting my parents and had a great time. I have a lot of catching up to do. I love candles and it does not matter what a person gives me. Also I never expect a present from anyone. All I want from others is friendship. To me that is the best present given. That is why I started a journal in the first place was to meet people and make friends and I sure hope you and I can be good friends. I love your journal and writing style BTW. I will be back to catch up on your life. :) Anita http://edit.journals.aol.com/ ginskia/whatdescribesanitaasan itaasanind Comment from ginskia - 9/7/04 3:45 PM we did dirty santa last Christmas at the in laws.Everyone buys a gift and you draw #'s to pick a gift out.My sil took 3 sets of candles for 3 gifts,1 from her, the dh and her daughter- it was funny cause the men ended up with the candles and they did not want them.Even the women did not want them.I like candles but these had no smell at all- I have a feeling that they will end up being re gifts this year! : ) ~ Anita Comment from apropst1 - 9/6/04 3:05 PM Ya I like scented candels too..have you ever smelled soy candels...I just bought some and they really have a nice scent to them. 4 year old birthday present? | Hip Mama home | archive | blogs | news feeds | polls | search | chat | recipes | what the heck's going on here?! Our Sponsors Home » blogs » Jaspersmama's blog 4 year old birthday present? Okay, dh and I are going to our friends birthday party next week, and he's turning 4. What are good gifts for this age? We need something cool. I know this is SO I know this is SO unoriginal, but you can't miss with Brio train stuff with kids that age. We still have every damn overpriced piece of track, and DS10 will still haul it out from time to time. "Our problems stem from our acceptance of this filthy, rotten system." - Dorothy Day By mamasusie at Fri, 09/16/2005 - 2:54pm | login or register to post comments Practical, but 100% successful Buy the kid a flashlight and batteries. I guarantee it will be the envy of every child there, useful FOREVER, and enchant the birthday child. "Dare to be happy! ALways take a chance! But never put frogs in your underpants!" By Gazpacho at Fri, 09/16/2005 - 1:56am | login or register to post comments Not so original but my Not so original but my Jasper LOVED Lego when he hit 4. It can be hard to find sets that aren't based on movies or cartoons (grrrr) but they're out there. Magic School Bus anything. Space seems to be big with most kids. We have a zillion glow in the dark stars and planets that look like they do through a microscope in the boys' room. Throw in a cheap black light and you're a hit. And beading kits with some super-excellent beads. They love it and will probably make you something beautiful. Jazz is into sea theme beads right now but he always goes back to wood or colourful glass and clay. Games are big- Kerplunk and Snakes and Ladders get used alot because the little brother can play but Jasper's favourite is chess. Any help? By rudi at Thu, 09/15/2005 - 3:35am | login or register to post comments I think the beading kit I think the beading kit idea sounds awesome. He's a crafty little guy. Thank you so much. BTW...love his name. I never thought about "Jazz" as a nickname, but my friend started calling my Jasper that last week. That's so hot. *giggle By Jaspersmama at Thu, 09/15/2005 - 3:45am | login or register to post comments Hmm... Lets see. Browse through How to Buy a Great Birthday Present for Under $10 , and consider these ideas, too. Steps: 1. Bring a plant for a traditional gift. Lucky bamboo symbolizes good fortune, grows in water and lasts for years. 2. Give a bottle of wine, tea bags, cappuccino mix or a bag of flavorful ready-ground coffee. Package with a pair of wineglasses, mugs or demitasse cups. 3. Feed growling stomachs with cookies, cake, pastries or a fresh fruit basket. Or bring a savory snack of cheeses and a crusty loaf of fresh bread (see How to Buy Artisan Breads ). 4. Buy kitchen towels or a few hand towels and bars of soap. 5.
