The simplest way is to designate Skidmore College or another charitable interest as the primary beneficiary of the policy. This is something a donor might consider if the original purpose of the policy is no longer relevant. An example would be a policy that was purchased years ago to provide added security for children's education expenses in the event of the policyholder's untimely death. The donor retains ownership of the policy, retains the right to change beneficiaries again if desired, and has access to its cash value if needed. Another method is to make Skidmore both owner and beneficiary of the policy. Unlike the previous method, this would be an irrevocable arrangement, and as such would qualify the donor for immediate tax savings. The donor can make this arrangement whether a policy is fully paid up or whether there are still premium payments being made. Finally, life insurance can be used in connection with other planned gift vehicles such as a charitable remainder trust to replace assets for heirs. For example, if a donor makes a gift through a charitable remainder trust, he or she is likely to realize significant tax deductions. Those savings can offset the cost of purchasing and paying premiums on a policy to "replace the wealth" for an heir or heirs. To learn more call or email the Office of Gift Planning. It can be hard to find sets that aren't based on movies or cartoons (grrrr) but they're out there. Magic School Bus anything. Space seems to be big with most kids. We have a zillion glow in the dark stars and planets that look like they do through a microscope in the boys' room. Throw in a cheap black light and you're a hit. And beading kits with some super-excellent beads. They love it and will probably make you something beautiful. Jazz is into sea theme beads right now but he always goes back to wood or colourful glass and clay. Games are big- Kerplunk and Snakes and Ladders get used alot because the little brother can play but Jasper's favourite is chess. Any help? Guests generally bring a thoughtful gift to the new homeowners and get a chance to eat, drink and informally tour the new house. Steps: 1. Consider the circumstances of the new homeowners. If they are well established, they probably don't need basics like small kitchen appliances or towels. If they are just starting out, however, these might be appreciated. 2. Bring a gift basket filled with gourmet foods, wine and/or useful items for the house or garden. 3. Consider outdoor needs. A new address plaque, a planter, a personalized doormat or a charming garden bench can all be welcome gifts. For use inside the home, bring a houseplant or indoor herb garden. 4. Give a local travel guide or a subscription to a local magazine or newspaper if the newcomers are from out of the city or state. It's a great way to get them acquainted with the new neighborhood. Maps are also a good idea. 5. Consider a book on interior design, landscaping or architectural styles. A cookbook can also be a great gift. 6. Give a gift certificate for a meal at a local restaurant, or tickets for a local sporting event or concert. A gift certificate for the local home improvement store will also be appreciated. 7. Make sure anything you buy can be exchanged or returned by the homeowners if they decide not to keep it. Tips: Don't feel like you have to spend a lot of money. A basket of homemade cookies or a bottle of wine both make a great gift. Sometimes an offer of help is much appreciated. Give a coupon for a meal to be brought in, help in the yard or a couple of hours of free babysitting. Warnings: If you don't know the new homeowners well, avoid choosing art, interior accents or things such as towels that may not fit in with the decor. I finally settled on Playschool flashlights from Toys R Usfor under $10 ($14 at Mr Mopps.) They turn white, red and green, & go off automatically after so much timehas elapsed. One family even used theirs during the summer west coast poweroutage as it was the only flashlight in the house. Good for boys & girls.Also my friend got kites for her gifts--gets kids and parents together too.Tavie At this age (and later, too) we usually give the birthday child eithera jigsaw puzzle or a couple of books. If you look around you can findsome good puzzles in the $5-$8 range, and a couple of picture books,soft cover, will be about the same. That way you don't get into issuesover guns, barbie dolls, etc. Of course, if you know the kid personallyyourself, and know they have a particular interest in collecting bugsor some such thing, then you can look for something along those lines.Dianna To Karen - shopping for a 3 year old girl's B-day party - I often askthe parents when I RSVP to the party if their child has any particularinterests (or aversions), and that prevents buying weapons or Barbie dollsfor families that forbid that type of thing. Having a 7 year old and a 4year old, I am now at the point where I let them choose the gift within acertain price range if they know the child and have an opinion. When indoubt - art supplies are always good - for 3 year olds, play dough or newcrayons, a pack of construction paper, or that type of thing is alwaysappreciated. ToysRUs actually has some good art sets with crayons, pencils,etc. for under $15. Price wise, I try to stay between $10 and $15 unlessthe child is a family friend. Hope this helps.
