With those seven years, Google has made tremendous growth and change, not only to itself, but also to the internet as a whole. With such dynamic recent debuts as the new GoogleTalk Instant Messaging program, the new Google Desktop Search program, and famed programs such as Adwords and Adsense, Google is poised to take over as the predominant force on the internet. So, the question is asked; what did Google get for its birthday? What present is big enough for the Mountain View based company that has its competition in a tizzy over execs that have flocked to its doors? How does a founding father of the internet sound? Thats right! On September 8th, Google announced that it was adding the Internet guru Vinton Cerf to its staff as Chief Internet Evangelist. Cerf has been hailed as, one of the great technology leaders of our time, by Google CEO Eric Schmidt. Vinton, who often goes by Vint, was made popular several decades ago when he helped co-design the TCP/IP protocols that eventually aided in the development of the architecture of the internet. Cerf brings with him experience like no other. Along with his development of the TCP/IP protocols, he has worked with MCI in technology development, eventually putting them on the internet map; he spent several years working with the Corporation for National Research Initiatives; hes a recipient of the coveted A.M. Turing Award, hailed as the Nobel Prize in computing; hes the Chairman of the Internet Corporation For Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN); and hes working on the Interplanetary Network, a project with NASAs Jet Propulsion Lab to extend the power of the internet to neighboring planets. Cerf joins Google with the tasks of helping Google build its overall infrastructure and architecture for the next generation. But those tasks are probably just the tip of the iceberg for the famed technologist. Speaking on his new position at Google, Cerf said, Google has already made tremendous strides in making access to information on the web a reality for users across the globe, but we're still in the Internet's early innings. This announcement is no doubt an excitement for Google. It means bigger things on the horizon. One has to wonder what Google has up its sleeves. Only time will tell and Cerf will be there when it happens. INTRODUCTION This policy statement is designed to ensure that all gifts to, or for the use of, Goucher College are structured to provide maximum benefits for the donor and the college. Because some gift situations might be complex, or more costly than beneficial, or restricted in a manner not in keeping with the goals of the college, this policy has been developed to establish standards by which all gifts will be evaluated, as well as a formal process for carrying out such evaluations. This policy is intended as a guide and allows for some flexibility on a case-by-case basis. II. GUIDING PRINCIPLES Goucher College encourages gifts in support of its mission as a private liberal arts college. Goucher College seeks to implement a gift acceptance policy that will protect: the best interests of the donor; the welfare of Goucher College; and the Goucher College employees charged with the management of the gift planning program. Donors are encouraged to consult with their personal advisors (accountants, certified estate or financial planners, attorneys, investment brokers, etc.) before making any gift to the college, particularly a planned gift. The college reserves the right not to accept certain gifts, including those from which the college will realize little or no financial gain, or which are made for purposes that are inconsistent with the college’s educational mission, or which have restrictions that violate the college’s ethical standards or require illegal discrimination. Donations of gifts for unrestricted, general purposes are encouraged because of the flexibility they provide in meeting the most pressing needs of Goucher College. The college shall acknowledge all gifts and donations in a manner that respects and honors the donor. In accepting a gift, the college also accepts a responsibility to the donor to steward that gift. This includes administering the gift properly, providing the donor with appropriate financial information about the gift, and, when appropriate, reporting to the donor about the use of the gift.
