The collective power of pooling gifts from many donors increases the size and investment earning potential of the overall fund. Donors may join in the Skidmore PLIF with a gift of cash or securities of at least $5,000. Subsequesnt gifts of $1,000 or more may be added. Each participant receives a percentage share of the total PLIF investment earnings each year. The amount of income received by the donor, or a beneficiary designated by the donor, depends upon the subsequent earnings performance each year. Growth in the value of the Skidmore Pooled Life Income Fund results in increased annual income for beneficiaries and a larger eventual gift for Skidmore. When the donor and/or beneficiary passes away, the donor's share of the PLIF principal is withdrawn and transferred to Skidmore College to be used for general educational purposes or for such specific purposes as the donor may have designated. Please call or email to learn more. Bring Legacy to Life! Philanthropy Legacy Security The Office of Gift Planning urges donors to consult their legal and other professional advisors when considering charitable gift giving. Our staff is always pleased to work directly with donors and their advisors during the process. Creative Thought Matters. I am sure many of you are wondering just what you can do to observe this most hallowed of occasions. A nice card, a kind word, and a warm smile are all things that would be much appreciated...BY SPINELESS LIBERAL KERRY SUPPORTERS! As for me, I am in need of goods and services! What do you get the guy that knows everything you may wonder? Well here is a loose (read: very specific) list of the things I most wish for this holiday (9-25 - Xmas) season. While I am not as big a fan of television as I used to be, my very favorite show right now is DEAD LIKE ME. It is very hard for me to catch it as it comes on showtime (which I do not get). The first season 'Dead Like Me - The Complete First Season' just came out on DVD and I am dying to get it, though it is pretty hard to find in actual stores. Two others I would like to have are Smallville: season 2 'Smallville - The Complete Second Season' and the first season of SURVIVOR 'Survivor - The Complete First Season' Everyone knows I am a huge music fan, and here are some albums that I would gnaw through a dirty sock to get my hands on! 'Impossible Dream' 'Identity Crisis' 'Revenge of the O.C. Supertones' 'Achilles Heel' 'Unearthed' 'American III: Solitary Man' 'Unchained' 'American Recordings' 'The Fashion Focus' Now we come to my absolute favorite catagory! BOOKS! These four books are absolute must haves! I dont know when I will get them, but I will someday! They are HARDCOVER editions of the first four books in Stephen King's DARK TOWER series. I have these books in softcover trade paperbacks but desperately want the hardcovers as they have added bonuses such as artwork etc that the softcovers do not. Dark Tower I: The Gunslinger 'The Gunslinger (The Dark Tower, Book 1)' Dark Tower II: The Drawing of the Three 'The Drawing of the Three (The Dark Tower, Book 2)' Dark Tower III: The Waste Lands 'The Waste Lands (The Dark Tower, Book 3)' Dark Tower IV: Wizard and Glass 'Wizard and Glass (The Dark Tower, Book 4)' Other than these I would love subscriptions to Entertainment Weekly or COnsumer Reports! FREE Newsletter. Sign Up Now! Friends and loved ones of the bride have it tough. Not only do you have to find great engagement, shower, and wedding gifts, but usually birthday and holiday gifts as well. When a bride is getting hundreds of presents from her registry, it can be hard to figure out other things she wants. Yet never fear, your trusty guide is here to give you ten great things that every bride needs. 1)A Slim Digital Camera When planning a wedding, a bride visits tons of vendors, sites and stores that she'll want to remember. With a slim digital camera in her bag, she'll be able to snap away and remember her options later. The bride planning her wedding with a fiance or mother far away will doubly appreciate the easy ability to digitally share pictures for consideration. 2) A spa gift certificate Every bride I've known was STRESSED out. An inexpensive manicure or pedicure will help her look great at pre-wedding events, tense muscles will love a massage, and a facial will help her skin look fantastic for wedding pictures. Or splurge and get her a full-day of beauty that will allow for maximum relaxation time. I recommend buying a gift certificate from spafinder.com, where the recipient can choose from a variety of spas and treatments. Buy Direct 3)A Book That Will Make Her Laugh Along those same lines, the stressed-out bride needs to laugh. Why not give her a book such as "Diary of a Mad Bride" a comedic tale told in diary format. After pooh poohing her friends engaged mania, suddenly the protaginist finds herself being THAT crazy bride. If that's not her taste, try a wedding comedy movie or tickets to see some stand-up - laughter is, after all, the best medicine. 4)Monogramed Goodies If a bride is changing her name, she'll appreciate getting towels, slippers, or keepsake boxes with her new initials on it. If she's not changing her name, similar items featuring the two initials for her and her fiance's last names will give hints of the new life she'll soon lead. She most likely won't have registered for monogrammed items - most registries that I know of don't have this option - so your gift will be unique. 5)Confirmation of Youth Remind her that getting married doesn't have to mean changing who she is, with a bottle of her favorite whiskey, a gift certificate for sex toys, or a coupon for a girls night out. If she's not a wild girl, give her the same kind of present that you would have given her if she wasn't getting married - she'll still love the sappy movie, or the funky t-shirt. 6)Honeymoon Gift If you know where she's planning on honeymooning, she'll love a helpful guidebook on the spot, or appropriate accessories. (beach blanket for a Carribean honeymoon, cashmere scarf for a ski-resort getaway, etc.) She won't have registered for it, but it will be tremendously helpful. 7)Lingerie Every bride can use some reminders of her beauty and sexiness. Give her some gorgeous lingerie that will help keep the spark alive after the wedding night. Those of you who are conservative can give a beautiful pegnoir set, while adventurous types can opt for skimpy or crotchless panties, latex bras, or, well, you get the picture! 8)Holiday Decorations Today's brides register for furniture, electronics, and camping equipment, as well as the traditional kitchen and entertaining gear. Yet very few brides have the holiday decorations they'll need to start new traditions and recreate old traditions. Whether you give a holiday ornament with both of their names engraved on it, a beautiful menorah, or a cornucopia to create a Thanksgiving centerpiece, your gift will be put to use for years to come. 9)Engagement Memories A newly married couple will have lots of documentation of the wedding day itself, yet few have documentation of planning the wedding. A bride will love a beautiful album with pictures of her shower, a journal for recording her thoughts during the process, or a scrapbook you've put together. Grooms, why not put together a scrapbook of your dating memories? To make it extra special, add tickets or gift certificates so that you can revisit one of the places that made such great memories. 10)A History of Her Fiance's Family She's gaining a whole new set of family members, but she probably doesn't have ANY idea of who they are! A thoughtful gift would be a labeled photo album with all of the new people in her family, or a beautiful groom's family tree (make sure you include the bride!). Because of their unwavering faith and trust in me, people are gathering at different places to celebrate my birthday, and for that I feel thanks and appreciation. I am just a simple Buddhist monk, and so I really don’t take that much interest in celebrating birthdays. Whenever I begin a new day, I always pray that the day will be a meaningful and beneficial one—that is, in helping and serving others. I feel that this thought is more important than celebrating a birthday. However, since people are celebrating my birthday with joy and happiness and with faith in me, I would like to offer them a few words. I am now seventy years old. During this lifetime, since I was fifteen or sixteen years old, I have taken on the responsibility of Tibet’s temporal and spiritual affairs. It was a responsibility that was too difficult to shoulder, but because of my karmic relations with Tibet, I took the responsibility and have served the country to the best of my ability. In the past 46 years, I have had to live as a refugee—most of my life has been spent as a refugee. During this time, the most difficult and saddest thing has been hearing endless stories about the sufferings of our Tibetan people inside Tibet: so and so died, a father died, relatives died, imprisonment, death by hunger and so on—endless stories of suffering and torture. Despite these difficulties, there are two reasons for not losing hope or being discouraged: First is that the people of Tibet have an unwavering faith and trust in me, and secondly, the teachings of the Lord Buddha help me to maintain my mental balance. I never become hopeless or desperate. I always have this thought: whatever I do, I do it for the benefit of others. As Shantideva says in the Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life: “And now as long as space endures, As long as there are beings to be found, May I continue likewise to remain, In order to drive away the sorrows of the world.” So when I think these thoughts, they give me courage and determination to face these problems. Because of these, I am not a desperate person, but a happy one. I now share my thoughts with my friends—both male and female. Every human being desires happiness and desires not to suffer. From my experience, I can say that to have a meaningful and happy life, inner development is more important than life’s external factors. The way one thinks is more important than the accumulation of wealth and external environment. It really makes a big difference. You have to bear this in mind. To have a compassionate and altruistic mind is the basis for happiness in this life and also the beginning of happiness for your next life. So the best present my friends could give me for my birthday is to be good, compassionate and altruistic people. So if people are celebrating my birthday with joy and happiness, I would like to say thank you.
