College Gift to Public
Amherst College News Releases: Amherst College Gift to Public Schools Amherst College Site Map Search Amherst College > News & Events > News Releases > Amherst College Gift to Public Schools Amherst College Donates $70,000 to Local Schools July 18, 2005 Contact: Paul Statt Director of Media Relations 413/542-8417 AMHERST, Mass.—Amherst College has donated $70,000 to the Amherst public schools to support the technology needs of schools in the town of Amherst. American colleges and universities need to recognize the fundamental importance of the secondary schools, says Anthony W. Marx, the president of the college. Education is the best tool we have for making the world a better place, and Amherst College is pleased to support the work of education at its foundations. Barry Del Castilho, the town manager of the town of Amherst, says that the gift is part of an effort to close a $1.7 million budget gap facing the town, schools and libraries for fiscal year 2006. Amherst Superintendent of Schools Jere Hochman requested $171,400 to replace, repair and maintain computer and communications equipment for the elementary schools. The college's gift is made in recognition that the college benefits from good schools in the town, says Peter Shea, the treasurer of Amherst College, and fits with our mission of education. Shea says the college likes to target its gifts to the town that way, realizing that it frees up other money for the town to spend on other priorities. Del Castilho puts it this way: By providing support for this more or less specific, high priority item in the elementary schools' capital request, the college's contribution prevents cuts in town, school and library services. Founded in 1821 for the education of indigent young men of piety and talents, Amherst College is now widely regarded as the premier liberal arts college in the nation, enrolling a diverse group of approximately 1,600 young men and women. Well known for its academic excellence, Amherst is also consistently ranked among the very best schools in the country in terms of accessibility: The college's financial aid packages are consistently the most generous in the U.S., and among its peer universities and colleges Amherst has the greatest economic diversity. Diversity, in its broadest sense, is fundamental to Amherst's mission. The college enrolls students from every state and more than 40 countries, and for the past several years more than 35 percent of Amherst's students have been students of color. Amherst offers the B.A. degree in 33 fields of study. ###

AskChrisKnight.com HOME :: Internet-and-Businesses-Online Google's Big Birthday Present By John Wooton Article Word Count: 410 [ View Summary ] Comments (0) The Mountain View based company; Google celebrated its seventh birthday on Thursday. With those seven years, Google has made tremendous growth and change, not only to itself, but also to the internet as a whole. With such dynamic recent debuts as the new GoogleTalk Instant Messaging program, the new Google Desktop Search program, and famed programs such as Adwords and Adsense, Google is poised to take over as the predominant force on the internet. So, the question is asked; what did Google get for its birthday? What present is big enough for the Mountain View based company that has its competition in a tizzy over execs that have flocked to its doors? How does a founding father of the internet sound? Thats right! On September 8th, Google announced that it was adding the Internet guru Vinton Cerf to its staff as Chief Internet Evangelist. Cerf has been hailed as, one of the great technology leaders of our time, by Google CEO Eric Schmidt. Vinton, who often goes by Vint, was made popular several decades ago when he helped co-design the TCP/IP protocols that eventually aided in the development of the architecture of the internet. Cerf brings with him experience like no other. Along with his development of the TCP/IP protocols, he has worked with MCI in technology development, eventually putting them on the internet map; he spent several years working with the Corporation for National Research Initiatives; hes a recipient of the coveted A.M. Turing Award, hailed as the Nobel Prize in computing; hes the Chairman of the Internet Corporation For Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN); and hes working on the Interplanetary Network, a project with NASAs Jet Propulsion Lab to extend the power of the internet to neighboring planets. Cerf joins Google with the tasks of helping Google build its overall infrastructure and architecture for the next generation. But those tasks are probably just the tip of the iceberg for the famed technologist. Speaking on his new position at Google, Cerf said, Google has already made tremendous strides in making access to information on the web a reality for users across the globe, but we're still in the Internet's early innings. This announcement is no doubt an excitement for Google. It means bigger things on the horizon. One has to wonder what Google has up its sleeves. Only time will tell and Cerf will be there when it happens. Birthday Gift for September
How to Choose a Birthday Gift for September - eHow.com Clear Instructions on How To Do (just about) Everything Web eHow.com Home Family & Relationships Center Family Life How to Choose a Birthday Gift for September Summer fun may be winding down, but not for friends and loved ones with September birthdays. Steps: 1. Consider buying jewelry or collectibles with the September birthstone, said to bring emotional enlightenment to the birthday girl or boy. The modern and traditional September birthstones are sapphires; the mystical stone is the agate. 2. Consider astrological attributes when purchasing a gift. The September Virgo's birthday falls between September 1 and 23; the practical and analytical Virgo may appreciate gifts such as mystery novels or an executive desk set. 3. Consider a September Libra, born September 24 to 30. Play up Libra's charming and compassionate nature by buying him or her gifts such as a nice bottle of perfume or cologne, or a photograph frame with his or her favorite picture in it. 4. Choose something in the astrological birthstone as an alternative to the monthly birthstone: the Virgo stone is the sapphire; the Libra's is the lapis lazuli. 5. Send a bouquet of morning glories, the September birth flower, to the birthday boy or girl. Tips: Men can be quite appreciative of flowers, so don't rule out such a gift right away! A September-born student might appreciate a trendy book bag or an electronic personal planner to start the school year off right. More birthstones for September include the lapis and the diamond.
