The Douglass Fund receives both unrestricted and restricted funds. Many of these gifts come from savings or brokerage accounts, Charitable Gift Annuities, or through bequests, insurance, or some other form of deferred giving, and represent a significant commitment, often payable over five years, or after one's death. They can be non-cash assets such as real estate, business holdings, or other estate assets such as IRAs. Piggy’s Birthday Present is a CD-ROM for early learners that builds English language arts and mathematics skills. Like Piggy in Numberland before it, this program gives teachers only one problem—how to get their kids off the computer! Piggy’s Birthday Present uses the popular “dot-to-dot” activity to provide fun and learning. With each dot-to-dot picture they complete, children are engaging in a sequence of progressively more advanced activities in language and number sense. The program is based on research into early language and mathematics learning, and the more than 2,000 questions originate from time-tested curricula. Piggy’s Birthday Present offers five murals in both mathematics and language arts. Students complete the murals, picture by picture, by answering questions at three different skill levels: kindergarten, first, and second grade. Whether in math or language arts, children alternate between content work and art work, and their learning potential increases via this “distributed practice.” After successfully completing the activity, students select from an array of paints, using the palette to color and customize their murals. Distributed practice, an important principle in educational psychology, is a perfect match for the dot-to-dot format, providing a systematic pattern of learning and playing, learning and playing. Murals for Language Arts and Mathematics In Piggy’s Birthday Present the research is solid, the activities classroom-tested, and the “kid-factor” high. Motivation and reward are keen in Piggy’s Birthday Present —students can print their pictures, search for hidden treasures, and receive special certificates. Sophisticated graphics and animation with whimsical characters and magical scenes all add to the fun. Also, Piggy’s Birthday Present is incredibly easy to play—there are no directions to read and Piggy’s friends Bee, Panda, and Baby Kangaroo are always nearby to help. Mathematics and language arts activities provide a sequenced progression of concepts and skills. English language arts emphasizes sight recognition, phonics (sounds), and morphology (word structure). Mathematics activities stress four areas: numeral recognition, counting, numerical relationships, and arithmetic. Each mural is supported by exercises at the three difficulty levels; students (or teachers) simply select the appropriate level. In addition, the numbers in the math dot-to-dots can be heard in several languages—Spanish, French, Chinese (Mandarin), Italian, Japanese, and Indonesian! Every mural contains several pictures focusing on a particular skill set. The Skills Summary feature gives teachers the content description for each mural at the easy, medium, or hard level. Students can work individually or in groups, and student work is always saved and recorded in the Skills Summary after every session. Piggy’s Birthday Present was developed by ThoughtMakers, a core team of cognitive psychologists, software engineers, graphic artists, and musicians. The program was produced, tested, and modified as part of a research and development effort headed by Dr. J. Arthur Woodward and Ms. Jill Gilkerson, Department of Psychology, UCLA. Answer: The nicest housewarning gift would be a mezuzah, which Jews affix to the doorpost. If you don't have a Judaica store near you, you can order one through www.judaica.com. Take a look at [5] http://www.judaism.com/mezuzah/ You'll also need to get a mezuzah parchment, which they have available. If that option doesn't work, consider a good Jewish book, or a gift certificate for a Judaica store. Both would allow the family to start a good Jewish library. Lastly, if neither of those pan out, consider something nice for the house. If the family keeps Kosher, avoid getting items used for food, as you don't know if they could be made Kosher. However, other items, such as picture frames, plants, etc. are lovely. Of course, the best gift is your good wishes and the knowledge that you are a friend. One morning when former grade-seven teacher Jim Blomfield entered his classroom in Kitchener, Ont., he found it reeking of alcohol. A student clutching a dripping gym bag said: “I brought a bottle of wine for you, sir, but it broke.” Blomfield’s pupil learned first-hand how difficult it is to find the perfect present for a teacher. Of course, teachers don’t expect gifts, but many of us want to acknowledge their hard work. So Today’s Parent asked teachers what tokens they really love receiving. As the end of the school year fast approaches, here’s how to avoid making a gift gaffe: Homemade and Homegrown Foodie teachers relish home-baked and freezable goodies such as banana bread . Others are not as enthusiastic. Says one educator, “It depends on whose clean hands do the baking!” Alternatively, your child can make a date with the teacher and bring in a basket lunch. Try make-your-own sandwiches — pack deli-sliced cheeses and meats, crusty rolls, fresh fruit and juice . Teachers with green thumbs also appreciate the personal touch. “One year I received a potentilla plant from a student,” says grade-five/six teacher Mike Anderson of Fergus, Ont. “I was really impressed that she had remembered I was starting a new garden.” Gourmet goodie. Little chefs love to scoop, pour and measure out the ingredients for this attractive and healthy gift. Buy a 2 cup (500 mL) Mason or screw-top jar. Add ½ cup (100 mL) small pasta, like shells or fusilli. Using a funnel (or a rolled-up cone of paper), pour in ¼ cup (50 mL) each of green split peas, yellow split peas, red lentils and barley — in that order. Let your child pat each layer gently with a gloved hand to flatten. In a small sandwich bag, place two vegetable bouillon cubes, 2 tbsp (30 mL) each of parsley flakes and dried onion flakes, ½ tsp (2 mL) each of thyme and pepper. Screw the lid on the jar and decorate both with stickers and indelible markers. Place in a basket along with the sandwich bag and a 28 oz (793 g) can of diced tomatoes. Write or type instructions on a small card: “In a large soup pot, combine contents of jar (except for pasta), can of diced tomatoes and 7 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then lower heat to simmer. Add contents of spice bag. Continue simmering for about 1 hour and when there’s about a half-hour to go, add pasta. Enjoy!” Punch a hole in the card, thread a ribbon through and tie it around the lid of the jar.
