Scribner House Contact Our Staff Gift Planning Home STANDARD MAIL 815 North Broadway Saratoga Springs, New York, 12866 GIFT PLANNING PHONE 518-580-5655 E-MAIL CONTACT Gift Planning Gift Planning Life Income Gifts - Charitable Remainder Trust Commonly known by its acronym, CRT, the charitable remainder trust is a valuable estate and financial planning tool that also helps donors fulfill philanthropic objectives. A donor can fund a CRT with cash or securities. The CRT will provide a stream of income to one or more recipients (a donor and spouse, for example) for life or for a fixed period up to 20 years. The trust ends when the income recipient(s) pass away or when the fixed period has ended. The remaining trust assets are then distributed to Skidmore, and other charitable recipients, if named, to be used in a manner determined by the donor when the trust was created. It is also possible to use real estate to fund a CRT. Life income payments can be made two ways: as a percentage of the trust assets as revalued annually (this is known as a unitrust, or CRUT) or by paying a fixed percentage of the original trust principal (this is known as an annuity trust, or CRAT). The unitrust provides a variable payment, while the annuity trust provides a fixed payment. Trusts are usually funded with a minimum of $100,000. Donors usually experience an increase in yield on the assts. Other advantages include an immediate charitable income tax deduction, avoidance of capital gains tax if appreciated assets are used to fund the trust, possible estate tax savings, and the creation of a legacy through your wonderful gift to Skidmore. Many donors use their tax savings to purchase a life insurance policy to replace for their heirs the assets used to fund the CRT. Please call or email to learn more. Bring Legacy to Life! Important Passover Facts Passover (Pesach in Hebrew) is the oldest continuously celebrated Jewish festival. The rabbis developed the ritual of the seder based on passages from the Torah. The Torah is made up of the first five books of the Hebrew Bible. The Hebrew word seder means order. The sedar is traditionally celebrated in the home. Haggadah is a book that contains the entire service used for the Passover seder. The central message for Jews in the Haggadah is that God rescued the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. In the Haggadah, the name of Moses is mentioned only once. On very sedar table there is a symbolic fifth cup of wine called the "Cup for Elijah." There is a teaching that the Prophet Elijah will answer Jewish legal questions that the ancient rabbis could not resolve. One of these questions was whether we drink four or five cups of wine or grape juice at the seder. There is also a seder plate which holds the six symbolic foods for passover. Three pieces of matzah are placed in the middle of the table on a matzah tray. One piece of matzah is hidden in the home for children to seek out. It is called the Afikomen. Usually a prize is given to the child who finds it first. Passover is celebrated every Spring as a family dinner and service. The traditional items used are a seder plate and matzah tray. It can be hard to find sets that aren't based on movies or cartoons (grrrr) but they're out there. Magic School Bus anything. Space seems to be big with most kids. We have a zillion glow in the dark stars and planets that look like they do through a microscope in the boys' room. Throw in a cheap black light and you're a hit. And beading kits with some super-excellent beads. They love it and will probably make you something beautiful. Jazz is into sea theme beads right now but he always goes back to wood or colourful glass and clay. Games are big- Kerplunk and Snakes and Ladders get used alot because the little brother can play but Jasper's favourite is chess. Any help?
