From Robin McClure , Your Guide to Child Care . FREE Newsletter. Sign Up Now! The Best Teacher Gifts Take Thought and Preparation Finding a thank you teacher gift for your kid's teacher, instructor, coach or provider that he or she will really appreciate takes time and creativity. A general consensus is to pass on impulse teacher gift buys of cute coffee mugs and calorie-filled candy, and forgo the temptation to get anything with teaching or kid-care messages for teacher gifts. (Chances are, they have too many of these items, and how many coffee mugs and teacher pins does a person really need?) A check with providers about truly memorable appreciation teacher gifts they have received provided the following suggestions. But in the end, all teachers and providers agreed that it truly is the thought that counts! 1) Consider giving a disposable camera and a coupon for development to take pictures of kids in the classroom as a creative and sure-to-be-used teacher gift. Or, tuck a note in explaining that this could be put to good use during a holiday break or vacation. 2) Make up a movie night package by getting an unpopped popcorn tub and fill it with snack items, drink, and free movie rental from your area video store. This makes a great teacher gift for males or for those you aren't sure of their interests or activities. (Who doesn't watch a movie from the video store at least on occasion?) 3) Purchase a book for your school's library at your child's reading level and dedicate it to the classroom as a unique and sure-to-be-appreciated teacher gift. Many teachers must build their own book library at their own cost, and so any additions will sure to be appreciated. 4) Send a teacher gift donation in the instructor's name to a charity. (Ask a co-worker if he/she has a favorite charity, if possible.) 5) Ask parents to pool resources and come up with a teacher gift from the class or camp. It could be a cash or non-cash item. A sentimental present would be to gather a photo of each child along with a personal message from each stating what this indiviudal is so special. Place it into a special keepsake book personalized with the year. Another idea loved by a kindergarten teacher was buying a silver charm bracelet and having each child purchase a charm that best depicts them or their interest. The teacher ended up with a loaded bracelet filled with soccer balls, books, ballet shoes, cheerleader, hearts, and more--and a wrist adorned with happy memories every time she wears this special teacher gift. 6) Consider giving a teacher gift certificate - something you know will be welcomed. It could be to an area store, local restaurant, or perhaps even to a teacher supply store so much-needed items can be purchased for the classroom. 7) Place some pretty bedding flowers (choose what is seasonally appropriate such as pansies, geraniums, petunias or impatients) in a basket with a pair of gardening gloves and a trowel into a basket as a teacher gift for someone with a green thumb. For an extra touch, consider having your child decorate the trowel with some paint. Tuck in a few seed packets and a message about how the teacher has helped your child grow this year. For cold weather alternatives, consider a bulb such as an amaryllis or a small plant like Christmas cactus. 8) Make something! Have you seen those cute fabric cut-out flip-flops for females? Find out the teacher's shoe size and then surprise her with a pair in school colors or in a zany fabric like zebra or leopard print. The cost can be less than $10 total. Just cut 1-inch-by-8-inch strips of fabric cut with pinking shears, and knot them on. Ta dah! It's a teachers gift that is sure not to be repeated by anyone else. Other ideas that would pleae males or females alike? A personalized CD holder or a warm blanket made from fleece. (Look at a fabric store or a Wal-Mart for ideas. Some styles are as simple as buying the fleece in two contrasting colors, cutting strips on the edges and knotting them together.) Of course, guests arent supposed to come with empty hands, and the case is rather special. So you face a problem of a housewarming gift. A lot of different traditions are connected with moving into a new house. Some of them are very ancient, about most we dont know, and even less we follow. The times have changed a lot and so have done some of those traditions. Nowadays housewarming gifts arent supposed to be massive and expensive, as they were used to be before. But they should be useful. As well as in case of celebrating marriage, you are welcome to ask the hosts if they need anything on their new place. Nowadays its normal to present money, though it could be taken as offence in the previous centuries. Still you can present some symbolic housewarming gifts. It can be a figure of a household ghost, who is supposed to conjure evil away. There existed a tradition to let a cat or a cock into a new house first. So cats, cocks, hens and dogs are considered to be the keepers of a new home. Nobody expects that you will bring the whole zoo with you on the housewarming, but you may present some statues, figures and toys, shaped like these animals, or nicely decorated pictures with their images. Another ancient tradition is to hang a horseshoe, found on the road, over the door. So anything, that reminds of a horseshoe or has its shape, presented as a housewarming gift, will show the hosts that you wish they felt comfortable on the new place.. The prosaic, but useful gifts, like kitchen towels, set of glasses, frying pens, set of utensils, a small carpet in the corridor, bad-clothes wont excite a hostess too much. But you can be sure that already next day she might remember you in the warmest words. If you wan to give something both nice and useful, you may choose some original vases or wall clocks. Always keep in mind that humble but long-lasting gifts are much better, than a bunch of roses which will be thrown away by the end by the week. College Gift
Centre College: Gift helps Voltaire scholars polish their understanding of French language, culture Gift helps Voltaire scholars polish their understanding of French language, culture RELEASED: July 28, 2005 DANVILLE, KYCentre College 2005 graduates Kim Bauser and Patrick Malarky couldn't wait to get back to France after their year abroad in Strasbourg. Thanks to the Voltaire Scholars Travel Fundthe brainchild of Charles Vahlkamp , Hazelrigg professor emeritus of Frenchtheir return trips were made a lot easier. "The fund covers travel expenses for a Centre student to return to France. It's a study opportunity that's more intensively language-based than our Strasbourg program," says Vahlkamp, who made a generous contribution to the fund in addition to conceiving it. "Patrick and I both received Voltaire scholarships this past year so that we would be financially able to travel to Strasbourg and work with Dr. [Ken] Keffer [Stodghill Professor of Modern Languages] for a month helping him prepare for his spring semester abroad," says Bauser. "We had originally planned to work as teaching assistants at the linguistic center in Besançon, but when that fell through Dr. Keffer generously offered to let us help him instead. With Dr. Keffer insisting that Patrick and I speak only French for the term, my skill and comfort with the language definitely improved. And, getting to return to a city that I'd already grown to love during my semester abroad my sophomore year reminded me why I had loved it and encouraged me to want to go backwhether for fun or even to work for a year or two. This trip also provided me with time and inspiration as I worked on my French seminar project, a series of short stories (in French of course) about my adventures abroad." Vahlkamp adds, "In recent years, several students who had spent a term in Centre's Strasbourg program were able to return to France for a winter term in Besançon, where we've established a link with a language institute there." The first student who went to Besançon was Whitney Camack. She went on to earn an M.A. in French civilization and literature at the University of Cincinnati, where she is now an adjunct instructor of French. She also teaches at Xavier University. "The impact on our students, observable upon return, has been spectacular," says Vahlkamp about the follow-up trips. "The fact of being on their own and of speaking French almost exclusively allowed for considerable linguistic progress and, more important, a substantial gain in self-confidence." A noted Voltaire scholar, Vahlkamp wrote his dissertation on Voltaire and published scholarly articles in Studies on Voltaire. Vahlkamp notes that Strasbourg has a Voltaire connection as well. The writer and philosopher spent one of his many periods of exile in the Alsace region, where Strasbourg is located. "We're humbled in the French program at Centre to have an emeritus colleague, Charles Vahlkamp, whose enlightenment knows no boundaries of space and time," says Keffer. "Charles is convinced that when our best students become Voltaire Scholars they might one day become scholars of Voltaire!" Richard Trollinger, vice president for college relations, notes that through programs such as the Voltaire Scholars, Centre, where 75 percent of students study abroad, has become a national leader in international study. "What Centre does through its study abroad program to prepare students for life in a global society is truly remarkable," he says. "The Voltaire Scholars Travel Fund has added value to the study abroad program for students majoring in French and who wish to take their study of French language, literature and culture to a new level." Students who would like to take advantage of this opportunity should contact Keffer at 859-238-5233 or keffer@centre.edu . Anyone interested in making a donation to support the Voltaire Scholars should contact Trollinger at 859-238-5209 or trllngr@centre.edu . - end - Founded in 1819, Centre College is ranked among the U.S. News top 50 national liberal arts colleges.
