birthday present. May: (Dejectedly)
The Best Present in the World The BestPresent in the World The following Readers' Theatre script was adapted from "The very best present in the world" written by PenelopeBender. It was rewritten by Pansy Koh Hwee Lin, Kow Hui Meng,Jamunah Rani and Lam May Yuen to suit the Singapore context. Narrator: Today is her mother's birthday and May isvery troubled because she does not have enough money to buy her muma present. May: 75, 80, 85 cents. (Sigh!) This is only enough tobuy the bottlecap of Mummy's favourite Chanel No. 5 perfume. What am I going to do? Narrator: May flips through the New Paper and saw a hugeadvertisement. May: (Reading the newspaper aloud) Guess the number ofCoke cans contest. 12 - 3 p.m. Grand prize: $200. Winner will beannounced at 3:30 p.m. today. Wow! That's just what I need... if only I could win ... Narrator: May went down to Cold Storage to join thecontest. May: What a huge crowd gathering around the contestarea! Wait a minute. Isn't that my classmate, Janice? Narrator: May walked up to Janice. May: Hi, Janice, what are you doing here? Janice: Hi, May! I came to join the contest. May: Me too. I'm going to get the contest formnow. See you later! May: (Thinking aloud) Gosh! There are rows and rows ofCoke cans piled up high like a pyramid. How am I going to startcounting them? Narrator: After hesitating for a very long time, May finallydecided to make her guess. May: I think I'll write 9,999 cans on the contestform. Please God ... please let that be the lucky number! Narrator: After dropping the entry form into the box, Maywaited impatiently for the results to be announced. At 3:30 p.m.,the emcee stood up and announced that the number of Coke cans wasNine thousand, nine hundred ... May held her breath ... andninety-nine. May: I won! I won! Narrator: May collected her prize joyfully. As she walkedout of Cold Storage, she met Janice again at the bus-stop. May: Oh, Janice! I won the grand prize! I'm goingto Takashimaya now to get a present for my mum. It's herbirthday. Janice: (Sadly) I'm very happy for you. May: (Concerned) But, you don't sound very happy. Is anythingwrong? Janice: (Sobbing) My ... my ... mother is very ill at home and shecan't get out of bed. I went to the clinic near my house butDr. Tan would not make house calls unless I pay $200. Butwe've no money. I'm really afraid of losing mum. She's all I have since daddy passed away. May: (In deep thought) Oh, dear! That's terrible. (A shortpause) What do you intend to do? Janice: I don't know. Narrator: May gazed at the prize money in her purse. After deliberatingfor a short while, she pressed the money into Janice'shands. May: Here, take this. Go and get Dr. Tan right away! Janice: But ... but ... you need this for your mum's birthdaypresent. May: Don't worry, it's okay. She'llunderstand. Janice: Oh! Thank you so much! Thank you so much! I'm sure my mumwill pay you back when she gets well. Narrator: Janice rushed back to her mum while May walked home slowly. Sheis happy that she had done a good deed but worried about hermother's birthday present. May: (Dejectedly) What should I do? I still don't have anypresent for Mum's birthday. Guess I'll just make a cardfor her. The card won't mean much without a present but ...it'll have to do. Narrator: That night, at the birthday party, May'sbrother gave their mother a gold necklace and her sister gave hermum a Versace bag. May: Mummy, I wanted to give you a present, but thiscard is all I have. Mother: But, May ... You've already given me apresent. Janice called and told me what you had done. You see, sweetheart, all the presents in the world wouldn't mean asmuch to me as knowing that you've understood what I'vebeen teaching you. May: What's that, Mummy? Mother: How to love, May. And that's the bestpresent in the whole world that any child could ever give to aparent. May: Do you mean it, Mummy? I wanted so much to giveyou the very best present in the world. Mother: Of course, I do, sweetheart. You have indeed givenme the very best present in the whole world and I'm veryproud of you! May: Oh ... Oh! Mummy, I'm so happy! Editorial Reviews Amazon.com Take a pinch of psychic phenomenon, add a dash of Southern gothic, stir in a sharp cast of talented actors, and you'll come up with The Gift , director Sam Raimi's ingenious gumbo of a thriller. It doesn't hold together as well as Raimi's earlier A Simple Plan , but the two films are stylistically connected-- The Gift was cowritten (with Tom Epperson) by A Simple Plan 's costar, Billy Bob Thornton, who in turn draws from the Deep South milieu that informed his own Sling Blade and his earlier collaboration with Epperson, One False Move . A similar sense of mystery permeates The Gift , in which a small-town Georgia psychic (perfectly played by Cate Blanchett) is tormented by tragic loss and visions connected to the murder of a local vamp (Katie Holmes) whose schoolteacher fiancé (Greg Kinnear) is a prime suspect. Other suspects include a hot-tempered bully (Keanu Reeves) whose battered wife (Hilary Swank) is one of the psychic's regular clients, and a traumatized local (Giovanni Ribisi) who is tenuously stabilized by therapy and antidepressants. While this trio of potential killers keeps the mystery alive, the requisite red herrings don't add much to the film's low-level suspense. Instead, Raimi is far more effective in creating an atmosphere of anxious dread that wells up from each of these finely drawn characters, starting with the widow psychic's extended mourning for her lost husband, the agonized terror of a beaten wife, and the percolating anger of a cuckolded spouse. All of this makes The Gift a worthy showcase for its esteemed cast, even as its plot twists grow increasingly familiar. --Jeff Shannon --This text refers to the Theatrical Release edition. Blanchett plays a clairvoyant woman in a small town, tarot cards and all, but thankfully she isn't shown to be omniscient and in fact makes lots of mistakes which people with better education or just greater knowledge could have avoided. An interesting turn of events lead to a murder, and almost anyone of the many characters could have been culpable. Katie Holmes plays the gorgeous victim, which only makes it twice as sweet! The suspense is contagious, the acting very convincing, and the background score is superb. Had me glued almost until the end, I did predict about 20 mins before the denouement who the killer could be, but that isn't too bad! I guess the movie's power lies in its character studies which happen to be wrapped in a homicide. Highly recommend this immaculate blend of high-octane drama and supernatural horror. At the very least, it'll leave you with plenty to think about. Was this review helpful to you? The performances are notable, particularly that of Giovanni Ribisi, who plays a mentally troubled auto mechanic who is on the verge of a complete meltdown. Keanu Reeves also does a star turn, as Hilary Swank's abusive and philandering husband. Cate Blanchett is excellent as the young, impoverished widow with kids, who just happens to have psychic gifts. The always underrated Greg Kinnear gives his usual excellent performance. The action takes place in a rural Georgia town, where Cate reads cards for clients in an attempt to make ends meet. Hilary Swank is one of Cate's clients. Cate counsels her to leave her abusive and womanizing husband, played by Keanu Reeves. This just earns Cate the emnity of Keanu, who begins a campaign of terror against her. Cate also reads cards for Giovanni Ribisi, who is a standout with his dazzling performance in the role of a mentally traumatized young man, whom Cate treats kindly. Cate is called to her son's school one day, where she meets with Greg Kinnear over something her son did. While there, she meets meets his kittenish fiancee, well played by Katie Holmes, who recognizes Cate as the local psychic and asks what she sees in their future. What Cate sees does not bode well for them. When Kinnear's fiancee predictably turns up murdered, the hunt is on for her killer. The obvious suspect is Keanu Reeves, who is tried and convicted for the murder, after Cate testifies at his trial. You see, the body was found in a pond on his property, after Cate had a vision about it, and Keanu had been having an affair with her and had been the last person known to have seen the deceased alive. After the trial, however, Cate has visions that lead her to believe that the real killer has escaped justice. While there are a number of red herrings that are thrown the viewer's way, the viewer should have no trouble zeroing in on the real killer. What is surprising is the way Cate escapes death at the hands of that killer. Therein lies the real surprise. Viewers should enjoy this quirky, though interesting, film. The real star of this movie is "The Classic". , July 29, 2005 Reviewer: Lorraine Smith (Richmond,B.C. Canada)- See all my reviews If you are a Sam Raimi fan then you know that his old car is always featured somewhere in his movies. This movie is great in every aspect but especially because if features "The Classic"( which is what Sam calls this car) in almost every scene. This adds a touch of comic delight to a very tense and suspenceful movie. This role is usually filled by Bruce Campbell but in lieu of his precense "The Classic" is a worthy stand in. All kidding aside this is an excellent movie and well worth your time. Keanu Reeves gives an excellent turn as a creepy wife beater. Cate Blanchet is as always flawless. Every role is excellently cast and acted with skill by all. Sam's direction is always great and this is no exception. Was this review helpful to you? ( Report this ) Can I Return This 'Gift?' , June 16, 2005 Reviewer: L. Mintah "Lotusneko" (Illinois)- See all my reviews While The Gift has a stunning, heavyweight cast of actors and boasts a screenplay co-written by Billy Bob Thornton, who wrote and directed Sling Blade, one of the greatest movies of all time, I was disappointed at the predictable plot, cliched screenplay, and one-dimensional characters. The Gift has a few things going for it. It has great indoor sets, and builds suspense well. There were some really scary moments. It is on par with a Lifetime movie, and not a bad way to kill an afternoon. Plus, how can you resist a cast featuring Cate Blanchett, Keanu Reeves, Hilary Swank, Katie Holmes, Greg Kinnear, and Giovanni Ribisi? Cate Blanchett stars as small town psychic Annie Wilson, raising three boys as a widow. She brings in extra money by doing card readings to people in need of serious mental and sometimes physical medical care. Here come the one-dimensional characters. This plot and group is so stereotyped and overdone that it would serve well as a Whodunit audience participatory dinner theatre murder mystery. Hilary Swank is the Abused Wife. Reeves is The Wife Beater, a bully so unbelievable he also threatens little boys. Ribisi is the crazy schizoprenic. Holmes is The Slutty Society girl. I would say how slutty she is, but it would spoil the story. The makeup is also really bad in this movie. Swank sports a shiner that screams "shoe polish," and is gone without a trace next time we see her. And when Holmes' dead body is shown, she looks like a ghost in a Gothic thriller rather than a dead body. She also looks like she is playing dead. Last, but not least, gratuitous nudity to push this up to an 'R' rating. Enjoy this Lifetime type film, but don't expect more than dinner theatre. Was this review helpful to you? ( Report this ) 1 of 2 people found the following review helpful: Once Again Ms. Blanchett Proves She Has A Lot Of Class!!! , May 27, 2005 Reviewer: John Baranyai "Book Nerd And Ex High School Geek Member Of The Chess Club" - See all my reviews In this movie Cate Blanchett plays a psychic who supplements her weekly income by giving card readings. A brutal murder takes place and Ms. Blanchett is requested to help solve the case by the local Sheriff. Ms. Blanchett's character proves that you don't need a lot of money to still have lots of class which is a lesson most rich folks I know could benefit from. Cate is supported by a powerhouse performance by Giovanni Ribisi who plays a traumatized young man barely stablized by his medication. This movie is sad, creepy at times, but never boring. --This text refers to the VHS Tape edition Was this review helpful to you? ( Report this ) 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful: It's Creepy, But It's Good , May 1, 2005 Reviewer: K. Fontenot "wandering aimlessly about" (The Pelican State)- See all my reviews Somehow, "The Gift" fell through the cracks when it came out in theaters. That's hard for me to understand, because not only does it have a brilliant cast, it's a great story that holds on to you and keeps you enthralled for the entire time. It stars Cate Blanchett, Giovanni Ribisi, Greg Kinnear and Katie Holmes. It also stars Keanu Reeves in what I consider to be his best performance as a wife-beating slackjaw who constantly hurts his wife(played with trailer trash charm by Hilary Swank). There's also a brief but very intense cameo by Dennis Hopper. The basic plot is this: A murder has occurred in Blanchett's sleepy little town. No one knows who committed it and leads are slim. In desperation, the local authorities seek out Blanchett's psychic abilities to look for clues. What ensues is a haunting tale of good ol' fashion spooks, creepy sequences, and a wonderful little mystery that keeps a grip on you. Written by Billy Bob Thornton, who has a knack for capturing the good folks of the South, and Tom Epperson. Sam Raimi directs this flick and though it is nothing like his "Evil Dead" films or even his "Spiderman" flicks, you can see bits and pieces of Raimi's brilliant and off-kilter humor throughout this film. A must see for fans of a good murder mystery, suspenseful horror, or Raimi fanatics. It's got an "R" rating for a reason, that being strong language, a little nudity, and plenty of butt-whipping violence. No kiddies allowed, unless you're a dolt. Highly recommended. On newstands today BirdieBall by Birdie Ball Inc. is the best golf training aid invented this century! That's a bold statement, but golf coaches and PGA golf instructors around the world agree, and have voted it the PGA, Product of the Year for 2005! It is a limited flight practice golf ball without limited feel. True feel with a long hang time, golf ball-like, trajectory! But it only flies 40 yards, so you have your own backyard driving range. Take a full swing. Draw it Fade it. Grab a buddy, get 40 yards apart and hit them back and forth. You wont believe the turbine sound created by the high rate of reverse spin. It's very durable, in fact the Pro Series wont break like other perforated practice balls or wiffleballs. Use the StrikePad to simulate taking a divot. It is a cambered polymer pad designed to replace conventional golf mats and turf pads. The cambered surface of the StrikePad creates an air cushion at impact. The Strike Pad will not grab the club. This protects your leading elbow by reducing jarring that happens when hitting off of other golf pads. The StrikePad deflects down at impact and follow through, and then rebounds back in the blink of an eye. In addition to being an incredible training aid, the BirdieBall is just plain fun. The 2004 PGA Merchandise Show marked the Birdie Balls introduction to the golf world. Adam Barr, Business Analyst with the Golf Channel, featured the "eyebrow raiser" to open the show. By the end of the show the BirdieBall had won one of the 2004 product of the year awards! Mark Murphy with Golf Digest's Golf World writes in the February 6th 2004 edition that odds are good that the Birdie Ball Inc will be successful. We know that you will agree. Chipping in Small Areas The feel one develops by chipping the BirdieBall in small confined areas is one of the BirdieBalls most incredible features. Although the BirdieBall is awesome for practicing a full swing it may be best when used indoors or in very small outdoor areas. Unlike all other off-course golf ball like devices the BirdieBall has rebound. When chipping a golf ball the feel of the ball on the club and the associated rebound are key to understanding how far your shot will travel. Further, lofting and de-lofting the golf club creates different feel and spin on the ball. The BirdieBall feels and spins like a golf ball as well in the chipping realm as in the full swing realm. Further, when using the BirdieBall with a very lofted club (pitching wedge) inside of its maximum 40-60 yard range the comparable distance is very similar to an actual golf ball. Lets take a quarter swing pitching wedge for example. I would expect a quarter swing pitching wedge to travel about 20 to 25 yards on a golf course. A quarter swing pitching wedge with BirdieBall will travel a comparable distance. A short chipping move with a straight left side and no wrist break would be equal to chipping a golf ball into a high back chair from short range, about ten feet. I practice chipping BirdieBalls into my chair at my office. It is the same exact move and feel. The reason it works so well is because the less we compress either a golf ball or BirdieBall the more they feel, fly and spin like one another. When I travel, I travel with about a dozen BirdieBalls and a collapsible pitching wedge (for sale right here). When bored in the hotel room, I will chip BirdieBalls into the heavy curtain covering the sliding doors. I put a trash can under my target area and watch the BirdieBalls slide down the pleat right into the hotels trash can. Hows that for downtime target practice! Hitting Driver One of the questions we get all of the time is; I can see where practicing irons and fairway woods would be great, but, can I hit Driver? Absolutely, we will soon be packaging all BirdieBalls with a BirdieBall tee (coming soon). Until then, there are a couple of different ways to elevate the BirdieBall so that you can take the big cut with the big 460cc Bang-O-Matic. First you can stack one BirdieBall on top of another. Hit the top one off of the bottom one. Second, take a kitchen sponge, cut it in half, stack it up and hang the BirdieBall off of one side. You can also hang it off of the edge of the Tee Up Area on the StrikePad. Awesome! BirdieBall as a Golf Gift BirdieBall may be the best golf gift that you can give a golfer. Regardless of whether the golfer is a low handicapper or simply a beginner this golf gift is truly right on the mark. Golf gifts are hard to choose because the golf gift often has to fit, in the world of golf gifts this is one size fits all levels of golfer. Further, golf gifts are hard to choose because you dont want to by the golfer something that the golfer already has. This gift has been getting rave reviews all over the world for the last couple of years. BirdieBall Golf Tips In this web site we have a page dedicated to golf tips. The golf swing is complicated. We believe that there are really only five golf tips that you need to remember. The first tip is a golf tip on the golf grip; the second golf tip is a tip on the golf club takeaway, the Y to L position. The third tip is a golf tip with regard to the position of the golf club at the top of the swing along with the inside to outside motion of the golf club on the downswing. The fourth golf tip is the importance of club head rotation through the hitting zone. The fifth and final tip is a tip on the down and through motion when using your irons.
