College Gift
Centre College: Gift helps Voltaire scholars polish their understanding of French language, culture Gift helps Voltaire scholars polish their understanding of French language, culture RELEASED: July 28, 2005 DANVILLE, KYCentre College 2005 graduates Kim Bauser and Patrick Malarky couldn't wait to get back to France after their year abroad in Strasbourg. Thanks to the Voltaire Scholars Travel Fundthe brainchild of Charles Vahlkamp , Hazelrigg professor emeritus of Frenchtheir return trips were made a lot easier. "The fund covers travel expenses for a Centre student to return to France. It's a study opportunity that's more intensively language-based than our Strasbourg program," says Vahlkamp, who made a generous contribution to the fund in addition to conceiving it. "Patrick and I both received Voltaire scholarships this past year so that we would be financially able to travel to Strasbourg and work with Dr. [Ken] Keffer [Stodghill Professor of Modern Languages] for a month helping him prepare for his spring semester abroad," says Bauser. "We had originally planned to work as teaching assistants at the linguistic center in Besançon, but when that fell through Dr. Keffer generously offered to let us help him instead. With Dr. Keffer insisting that Patrick and I speak only French for the term, my skill and comfort with the language definitely improved. And, getting to return to a city that I'd already grown to love during my semester abroad my sophomore year reminded me why I had loved it and encouraged me to want to go backwhether for fun or even to work for a year or two. This trip also provided me with time and inspiration as I worked on my French seminar project, a series of short stories (in French of course) about my adventures abroad." Vahlkamp adds, "In recent years, several students who had spent a term in Centre's Strasbourg program were able to return to France for a winter term in Besançon, where we've established a link with a language institute there." The first student who went to Besançon was Whitney Camack. She went on to earn an M.A. in French civilization and literature at the University of Cincinnati, where she is now an adjunct instructor of French. She also teaches at Xavier University. "The impact on our students, observable upon return, has been spectacular," says Vahlkamp about the follow-up trips. "The fact of being on their own and of speaking French almost exclusively allowed for considerable linguistic progress and, more important, a substantial gain in self-confidence." A noted Voltaire scholar, Vahlkamp wrote his dissertation on Voltaire and published scholarly articles in Studies on Voltaire. Vahlkamp notes that Strasbourg has a Voltaire connection as well. The writer and philosopher spent one of his many periods of exile in the Alsace region, where Strasbourg is located. "We're humbled in the French program at Centre to have an emeritus colleague, Charles Vahlkamp, whose enlightenment knows no boundaries of space and time," says Keffer. "Charles is convinced that when our best students become Voltaire Scholars they might one day become scholars of Voltaire!" Richard Trollinger, vice president for college relations, notes that through programs such as the Voltaire Scholars, Centre, where 75 percent of students study abroad, has become a national leader in international study. "What Centre does through its study abroad program to prepare students for life in a global society is truly remarkable," he says. "The Voltaire Scholars Travel Fund has added value to the study abroad program for students majoring in French and who wish to take their study of French language, literature and culture to a new level." Students who would like to take advantage of this opportunity should contact Keffer at 859-238-5233 or keffer@centre.edu . Anyone interested in making a donation to support the Voltaire Scholars should contact Trollinger at 859-238-5209 or trllngr@centre.edu . - end - Founded in 1819, Centre College is ranked among the U.S. News top 50 national liberal arts colleges. SEND BIRTHDAY GIFTS Time to pamper; time to rejoice; time to celebrate; celebrate with gifts. · Fresh Flowers · Cakes · Teddy Bears · Perfumes · Jewellery · Chocolates More Birthday Gifts Birthday gifts shopping Gifts can be classic, gifts can be wacky, but loveable are the ones which are funny, clever, convenient and useful with the right price tag. Birthday gifts embrace so much of variety, it's amazing to see their range and diversity. Apart from certain conventional gift items it can be anything else that the birthdayer loves to have on the occasion. As simple as a bunch of nice flowers, or a box of candy and chocolates, a piece of toy or a rare species of sprouting plant, an item of trivia or an object d'art, sheer utilities like a set of cutlery or something that pampers luxury like a box of jewelry...The list can go on and on. However, it ultimately rests on the tastes of both the gift-maker and the recipient, the background of their relationship, along with the age and the social status of the two. Following are some ideas on gifts which are great and easy shopping for him, her, teens, babies and kids. Let us start with the conventional ones e.g. Floral gifts Traditionally flowers are great gift items. Be they ordinary or the cut ones, make sure they are well arranged and bear your personal touch. You can also gift them in designer vases with the name of the birth dayer imprinted on them. Object d'art Choicest books and writing materials like pens, letter or writing pad can go well with and for all ages. For kids and grown-ups with some creative bent of mind, it may be anything - from drawing and coloring materials like crayon, brush, palette, to a musical instrument; from toys or games of infotainment to IQ riddles. These things always add values to the recipient's creative inclination. Collectibles It includes Traditional and contemporary picture frames and photo albums in wood, metal and glass for every occasion. Sporty gifts For the sporty ones choose from among leather sports caps, sporting accessories including gears featuring favorite NFL, NHL, NBA, MLB, and college team logos. Traditional golf apparel and accessories like a rainbow of gloves, or the putter, may be numbered and engraved with the individual's name can be a superb gift. Special boutique You can also choose from among special purpose boutiques like 'bath bags' entailing body lotions and creams, bubble baths and oils, scented candles, tub toys and more. Special purpose boutique may also include cosmetics and beauty care items or a strain of variety like incense, aromatherapy, candles, incense, bath and body lotions and much more. Musical gifts Again a cassette or CD - audio or video, relevant to the age and the nature of relationship, can be great for all. Amazon is a good place to secure the collection you want. But no less great is the idea of dedicating something to the listening pleasure of the birthdayer. Make a request to the host of a radio or TV program for some music or song of your or the birthdayer's choice. Utilities These category include anything from a nice looking useful school bag to a fancy leather bag or even a sizeable kit bag. A watch or a bike. Virtually it can be anything which the birthdayer use or wants to use in day to day life. Jewelry It includes rings, bracelets, necklaces, photographic charms, handcrafted jewelry and beaded votive holders. Miscellaneous Gifts under this category can be anything from fountains, clocks, wind chimes, dream catchers to hand-carved and ceramic hand drums fountains made of lightweight acrylic sculptures, picture pals. Also they can be any of the fashion accessories right from the low end platform shoes to trendy leather footwear and stylish clothing. Need a gift for well-being and recovery? There are some - not only fun and practical but nurturing and therapeutic. Branded to fit their utility value like Ocean Spirit, Fairy Spells, Tranquility and so on these are not highly expensive. Great is also the idea of gifting the birth dayer a ticket to a favorite sporting event, a movie or concert, and of course to a theater show, if agrees with the birth dayer's choice and your affordability.
