60th Wedding Anniversary Gift Ideas Dear Dr. Dave and Dr. Dee, My parents will be celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. My brother and I want to give them a big party with family, friends, neighbors, and church members, but they don't want one. Should we honor their request, or give them a "surprise"? Also, what would be a good gift? My brother and I want to give a joint gift from both our families. My husband and I can afford to send them on a two-week cruise, but my brother cannot contribute that much. My brother wants us to pay equally. What should we do? Signed, Compromise? Dear Compromise, The 60th wedding anniversary is very special indeed. However, you should honor your parents' request to not have a party, and honor your brother's request to share in a gift for them equally. Instead, have a family celebration or dinner with just the immediate families. Although the 60th wedding anniversary is diamonds, you do not have to get them a gift of diamonds. Any gift for a special birthday is also appropriate for wedding anniversaries. One of the most often cited cherished gifts is a memory photo album composed of photos and special remembrances of their marriage. For example, the photo album could have crystal rhinestones glued on the front to simulate diamonds, and contain something like the following: 1. Photographs of the highlights of their 70 years together. Enlist the help of other family and friends to get copies of photos. Include their wedding photo, photos of children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, friends, vacations, and other special moments over the 70 years. 2. Written tributes: Close family members and friends write a short tribute to your parents and include a funny or touching anecdote. Intersperse these tributes throughout the album. For friends, ask them to include information such as how long they've known one or both of your parents, how they met, and their first impression. 3. You can request a special congratulatory note be sent to your parents from the President of the United States (if a U.S. citizen). Be sure and request this well in advance (at least 6 weeks). See www.whitehouse.gov 4. Historic news headlines, popular songs, and movies on the day of their wedding. Greeting card shops often have these "time capsule" sheets that can be printed out. Or, you can design your own using info from the Internet or from websites. Depending on your parents' interests and limitations, other gift ideas could be an amplified, large button telephone or a computer so that they could email all family members.

I've seen the standard knife, cigar, flask, lighter, poker, et all, gift recommendations. I'm looking for some more interesting items that are effervescent while not ephemeral. Right now I'm considering some Airsoft rifles and 2000 rounds for battle, but anything else is certainly welcome. What did you do for your Groomsmen? Since we knew we were having a Mexican-themed reception later that summer for all the family and friends who couldn't make it to Mexico with us, we decided to bring back 200 shot glasses as wedding favours. (You can imagine the looks we got at the gift shop where we made our purchase! I'm sure I heard someone say "Gringo Loco" as we walked out.) Slight tangent but we had an ulterior motive to giving out shot glasses. We didn't want to "pass the boot" as some couples do to get cash donations towards a honeymoon. Instead we had our Best Man and Maid of Honour sell shots of tequila and Baja Rosa throughout the night with donations being collected in a sombrero. We made a few pesos from this idea and were even able to go back to Mexico the following year with some of the money. As for groomsmen gifts, everyone in our wedding party (Best Man, Maid-of-Honour, MC) plus my sister and her husband and my wife's brother got a shot glass but, to get a big laugh from the crowd, we also gave them over-sized cocktail glasses. I can't find a photo online but have seen them at Michael's Craft stores, Wal-Mart, Zeller's (Canada only) and Home Outfitters (Canada-only as well I think but there are likely similar stores wherever you are if not in Canuck-land.) posted by Jaybo at 4:37 PM PST on April 4 I found a photo of the oversized glasses we gave our wedding party. We sought out interesting and one of a kind clocks for each person. Another great idea I've seen is artwork. I'm a photographer, and last year a couple bought two prints from my studio to give to members of their wedding party. I stopped wearing watches in high school. The sun comes up, it goes down. At another wedding, I received a Swiss knife. Best present ever. Still have it, though I use the Squirt now as my primary knife. Love the barbershop shave comment, put me down for "events" rather than "items." As an iPod owner, I've got to say that if I were given an iPod shuffle, I'd probably make a point of using it while working out, so I think that's not a bad idea by any means. Also, as a non-smoker, I would keep (and occasionally use, and appreciate) a Zippo lighter if I were given one. Had them engraved with name, date and stuff. Reasonable price and gag appeal. So all us groomsmen received fantastically huge silver belt buckles with our initials on them. I'm wearing mine now! So depending on where you're holding the wedding, you could tie the gift/activity into the region... much like Jaybo and his Mexican-themed tequila-filled shot glasses. Also, I was a groomsman at theinsectsarewaiting's wedding, where we all received a great big Swiss Army Knife (like user92371 ) and a leather holder. At that wedding there was also a groomswoman and she lucked out: she got the groomsman's gift (the knife) and also the bridesmaid's gift (silver bracelet.) I finally settled on Playschool flashlights from Toys R Usfor under $10 ($14 at Mr Mopps.) They turn white, red and green, & go off automatically after so much timehas elapsed. One family even used theirs during the summer west coast poweroutage as it was the only flashlight in the house. Good for boys & girls.Also my friend got kites for her gifts--gets kids and parents together too.Tavie At this age (and later, too) we usually give the birthday child eithera jigsaw puzzle or a couple of books. If you look around you can findsome good puzzles in the $5-$8 range, and a couple of picture books,soft cover, will be about the same. That way you don't get into issuesover guns, barbie dolls, etc. Of course, if you know the kid personallyyourself, and know they have a particular interest in collecting bugsor some such thing, then you can look for something along those lines.Dianna To Karen - shopping for a 3 year old girl's B-day party - I often askthe parents when I RSVP to the party if their child has any particularinterests (or aversions), and that prevents buying weapons or Barbie dollsfor families that forbid that type of thing. Having a 7 year old and a 4year old, I am now at the point where I let them choose the gift within acertain price range if they know the child and have an opinion. When indoubt - art supplies are always good - for 3 year olds, play dough or newcrayons, a pack of construction paper, or that type of thing is alwaysappreciated. ToysRUs actually has some good art sets with crayons, pencils,etc. for under $15. Price wise, I try to stay between $10 and $15 unlessthe child is a family friend. Hope this helps.
