(SHNS photo by Nancy E. Hill / courtesy Chris Madden Inc.) By Chris Casson Madden Scripps Howard News Service The invitations have arrived in the mail and you probably have a shower to attend before the big day. It's the peak of wedding season across the country, and along with the festivities are the gift decisions we'll be making for the bride and groom. These days the couple can be a young pair just starting out or those entering a second marriage that could include the blending of families and households under one roof. Clearly, finding a special gift depends on the couple's tastes and lifestyle. The tradition of a china registry at a favorite department store will never go out of style, but today people also are coming up with some wonderful, creative alternatives. Similarly, around the country the bridal shower and luncheon are still alive and well, but now we also see his-and-her showers that often have a gift themes, such as home improvement items or kitchen appliances. The Internet also has made for even more alternatives for registries and gift options for friends and family. From Saks Fifth Avenue to Target, department stores are putting couple's gift registries online. So after a few clicks of the mouse and a handy credit card, you can select a gift from a registry and even have it wrapped and shipped. Stores specializing in home decor and accessories also are very popular places to register these days, including such national standards as Williams-Sonoma, JC Penney, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Pottery Barn and Crate & Barrel. Here are some of my ideas for wedding and shower gifts that will enhance any newlywed's home: Gift certificates welcomed: The variety of stores that offer gift certificates can help you stay within a budget and ensure the couple will choose something they want and need for their new home. You can choose from a favorite department store, specialty boutique or even a home improvement center. Timely gifts are a favorite: Whether it's a formal Waterford crystal clock or a funky urban design for the kitchen, clocks are a creative choice for a home. Be sure you know the design style that will work best for the recipients. Pampering gifts for breakfast in bed are a treat: Taking a cue from colors and linen choices mentioned in registries, look for bed accessories. As I have in my own home, consider a "bed desk." These can include features such as flip tops and side storage racks. They're prefect for reading and catching up on letter writing or for that special breakfast in bed. Framing memories is always a must: You can never go wrong with a beautiful picture frame for that wedding portrait or candid honeymoon photo. These are the visual memories that can last a lifetime, so why not frame them elegantly? Consider a trio of sterling silver frames in varying sizes, or a single large one engraved with the wedding date. If a couple has a more casual lifestyle, photo albums with acid-free paper are also a good choice for storing those treasured pictures. Enhance a tabletop: Take a look at the china patterns that the couple has chosen and you can complement them with accessories. Tablecloths and napkins are an obvious choice, but you can also choose candlesticks or napkin rings that will fit with their color and design scheme. A wonderful vase for fresh flowers is also a classic wedding gift, but look for something a bit different. A ceramic pair can also serve as sculpture in a contemporary living room, or a quintet of small silver bud vases can be used in a variety of ways. Use your creativity and learn a bit about what the bride and groom want in their home, and you'll enjoy the giving as much as they'll enjoy receiving your gift. Age 3+ Pinecone Ornament Age 2+ Plastic Canvas Christmas Tree Ornaments Age 6+ Ribbon Ornaments likely the toughest craft on the site. Suitable for adults. Age 1 2+ Rudolf Pin Age 5+ Snowman Soup with optional Mug Age 2+ can do the soup Age 5+ can make the mug to go with No Picture Available Tile Collage Age 5+ Tri Bead Napkin Rings Age 5+ Christmas Handprint Craft Ideas: Handprint and footprint crafts make great Christmas craftprojects. Rather than simply doing the projects on paper, you can stampthem with fabric paint onto t-shirts or napkins. You can arrange them onpaper and cover with clear contact paper to make placemats. Or you cantrace onto craft foam, cut out and glue to make wall hangings and Christmas treeornaments. Here's a list of hand and footprint Christmas projects on thesite: Angel Handprint and Footprint Craft with Poem Christmas Handprint Wreath Christmas Tree Handprint Craft Rudolf Hand and Foot Craft If you would like to add to the project, we have a variety of handprint poems to go with your craft. Here are some more thoughts that viewers have sent in: I have a home daycare with kids the ages of 0-7. Some christmas gift we have made are. Handprint wreath on burlap with a wooden dowel to make it a banner. I just painted the kids hands green and helped them place it in a circle then I painted their thumb red to make berries. I also took blue felt and painted their feet white and had them stand on the felt then painted their hands white and and placed them out next to the top of their feet. This makes an angel. We also glued fake doll hair on the balls of the feet and wiggle eyes under the hair. We have also traced their hands onto fusible web then fused the hand prints to different types of christmas fabric, then I cut out the handprints and fused them to a piece of Christmas fabric in the shape of a tree with the hands pointing downward. I also made this product a banner with a dowel. Another idea I had is to trace my kids hands out of constructions paper and put it in the center of the plate and on the edge put their name and the date. I think that would make a great Christmas gift for grandparents. One idea that worked very well was to make the child's handprints in dough that is bakeable ( self-hardening ). Put the year and child's name on it along with a hanger on the back. I had a parent call me when she opened the gift on Christmas day, in tears. Said it was the best thing she could have every gotten because although she always wanted to do this, she put it off and had we not done it, her child would have grown up before she did it herself.

We seek to work with donors and their advisors in order to achieve our donors' philanthropic goals through a gift to Goucher. Alumnae, alumni, trustees, parents and friends who have made a gift to Goucher College through their thoughtful financial and estate plans, and have informed Goucher of their plans, are recognized in the Second Century Associates Society. To learn more about gifts made through a will, please visit the bequests webpage. To learn more about life income gifts, please visit the life income gifts webpage. Why should I make a planned gift in addition to my Annual Fund gift? Annual fund gifts are made and spent in a single year. They supplement basic operating costs not covered by tuition and are an important source of revenue. For the long-term growth of the college, however, a strong base provided by endowment and capital funds is necessary to support the initiatives which will enable the college to reach its potential. For many who cherish the memories and value the lifelong lessons learned at Goucher, a planned gift is a means of honoring the past by investing in the future. A gift need not require a substantial outlay of capital to make a significant difference to the college, but it does require vision and commitment on the part of the donor.
