Traditional wedding anniversary gifts Traditional wedding anniversary gifts A traditional gift guide for wedding anniversaries, including modern gifts lists, and creative ideas for thoughtful and memorable gift giving. When Mrs. Emily Post penned her first etiquette book in 1922, she offered a guide to appropriate anniversary gift giving for the first, fifth, tenth, fifteenth, twentieth, twenty-fifth and fiftieth years of marriage. Gifts in the early years of marriage were small remembrances, or tokens, such as paper (1st), wood (5th), and tin (10th). In later years of matrimony, gifts gained value, including crystal (15th), china (20th), silver (25th) and gold (50th). Mrs. Post commented on the light-hearted nature of early anniversary gift giving, saying "the paper, wooden and tin presents are seldom anything but jokes. Crystal is the earliest that is likely to be taken seriously by the gift-bearers." By the time her etiquette tome was reprinted in 1957, Mrs. Post commented on the growing importance of wedding anniversary celebrations in America and the greater trend toward gift giving by family and friends. She reported that the traditional gift list had been expanded to include more anniversary years, and that modern alternatives to traditional gifts had become socially acceptable. The traditional and modern anniversary gift guides have changed very little during the past half-century and include recommended gifts for each of the first fifteen years of marriage and for every five years after that. Year Traditional Modern 1st Paper Clocks 2nd Cotton China 3rd Leather Crystal or Glass 4th Fruit or Flowers Appliances 5th Wood Silverware 6th Candy or Iron Wood 7th Wool or Copper Desk Sets 8th Bronze or Pottery Linen or Lace 9th Pottery or Willow Leather 10th Tin or Aluminum Diamonds 11th Steel Fashion Jewelry 12th Silk or Linens Pearls 13th Lace Textiles or Fur 14th Ivory Gold Jewelry 15th Crystal Watches 20th China Platinum 25th Silver Silver 30th Pearls Pearls 35th Coral Jade 40th Rubies Rubies 45th Sapphires Sapphires 50th Gold Gold 55th Emeralds Emeralds 60th Diamonds Diamonds Whether the giver selects from the traditional or modern gift list, anniversary gift giving offers opportunities for creativity and originality. The first year anniversary is often difficult for those who prefer to give traditional gifts. But with a little creativity, paper can be a lovely and memorable gift for a couple celebrating the first year of marriage. Token gifts can include anniversary cards, designer decorated paper plates and napkins, books and elegant writing paper. For those searching for a larger gift for a special couple, first year paper gifts can include tickets to events or certificates for romantic dinners at favorite restaurants. The gift giver might elect to combine traditional and modern gifts, presenting the anniversary couple with a certificate for a weekend stay at a country bed and breakfast accompanied by a sleek, modern travel alarm clock. For a very special couple, remember that airline tickets to faraway resorts are printed on paper, too. For most gift givers, the traditional list offers the most challenges. But it also offers opportunities for giving truly thoughtful and exciting gifts that will be remembered for years. One gift giver facing the fourteenth anniversary of her sister and brother-in-law was stumped by ivory. For the previous thirteen years, she had used the traditional list as her guide. Giving from the traditional list had, in fact, become her own tradition. She was not about to let it end. After much thought and browsing through stores and on the Internet, she settled on a set of twelve ivory colored dinner napkins in a heavy patterned silk. The gift was a hit and the tradition of giving traditional gifts was maintained. Anniversaries are a special time for the couples who celebrate them. They are made more special by the thoughtfulness of friends and family who remember the couple with gifts --large or small, traditional or modern. Start your own tradition by remembering anniversaries and marking them with traditional or modern gifts, or creative combinations from both lists. Traditional and modern gift combination ideas for the early years: 1st - Combine a gift subscription to a morning newspaper with a bedside alarm clock. (Paper/Clock) 2nd - Fold brightly colored cotton napkins inside oversized his and hers coffee cups and saucers. (Cotton/China) 3rd - Accompany a set of beer glasses with tooled leather drink coasters. (Leather/Crystal or Glass) 4th - Place a bouquet of seasonal flowers in a blender or other kitchen need. (Fruit or Flowers/Appliances) 5th - Combine a wood serving block pretty enough for a party table with cheese cutters or other silver serving pieces.(Wood/Silverware) 6th - His and hers golf clubs are one way to combine iron(s) and wood(s). Or present a couple's favorite candies in a velvet-lined wooden keepsake box. (Candy or Iron/Wood) 7th - Accompany a woolen "throw" or blanket in a rich plaid with an antique or reproduction lap-top writing desk. (Wool or Copper/Desk Sets) 8th - Pair a pastel linen tablecloth or placemats with pottery dinnerware for casual dining. (Bronze or Pottery/Linen or Lace) 9th - Place a leather cushion on a willow (rattan-like) chair or foot stool. ANOTHER BIRTHDAY PRESENT!!! Aug 30 '00 If your children are like mine then they are always receiving invitations to birthday parties. A party at Chuck E. Cheese's last week, another one at McDonalds next week. We have even had a few times when my daughter was at Chuck E. Cheese's and my son was at McDonalds for two different parties at the same time. Birthday parties for children get expensive. When an invitation to one comes in if you are not prepared with a gift for the party then it can ruin the weekly budget. Buying the gift, wrapping paper and a card. It adds up. It adds up especially when there are so many of these parties to go to. Once the school year begins the invitations begin coming in. It gets expensive. So I have devised a few plans to help me battle the birthday party expenses. When wrapping the gift try to RECYCLE your old newspapers. A great and fun way to wrap a gift for a child is to use the newspaper. My daughter sits and cuts out letters from the newspaper to make a card. We use the YOU BORN TODAY in the horoscope section to make a card that is personalized. You can be very creative with a newspaper. We also use the comics section to wrap the gift. My children make all of their own cards for Birthday parties. My daughter has made cards that are fun by cutting out the crossword puzzle section and pasting it into her card. She has added the word jumble and her own coloring and imagination and made some really nice cards for her friends. She has cut individual letters out of the paper and put the friend's name on it. For the younger child's party it is not necessary to wrap the gift. If you are invited to the party of a one year old or even a two year old I think it is silly to wrap the gift. I make bags for those parties using paper grocery bags that the kids can decorate. For the smaller child the mom is usually the package unwrapper and I think it is easier to just reach in and take the present out rather than to make it long and drawn out. Using recyclables to wrap a present saves money and it is a lot of fun. It takes more time and more thought than spending 4.00 on a sheet of wrapping paper, but if you have the plan in mind it is easy to do. Buying the present itself can also add up. I shop at the clearance sections and keep things on hand. Kaybee has a great toyclearance section to purchase gifts for parties. I put these things away and pull them out when I need them. If I dont happen to have anything on hand then when I go to purchase an item I usually buy two. This way I can put the item away for the next party. If the next party doesnt happen then I have a stocking stuffer for one of my own children. I try to buy items that are classic toys. I do not purchase the trendy stuff. I put coloring books and markers and paint brushes away. A great gift for an older child is a disposable camera. The child can use it at the party. I purchase these when I see them on sale and put them away for the birthday parties. School supplies are also a good gift. Blank books, notebooks, pens pencils. These can be picked up inexpensively when they are on sale and they can be put away. Presents for Birthday parties can be a lot of fun to purchase and to wrap. We make the wrapping be a lot of fun. Friends, family, and neighbors often share in the excitement by taking a housewarming gift to the new homeowners.
But what should you give? The answer depends partly on how well you know the recipients, and if you have insight into their personal tastes and preferences, their needs and wants.
For your closest friends, housewarming gifts can be personal, humorous, and special, while for new neighbors or acquaintances you may want to make more generic gift choices.
Housewarming gifts are the one type of gift that needn't always be formally gift wrapped. After all, plants, gift baskets, and other large items are difficult and unwieldy to wrap in gift paper. Instead, consider using tulle fabric or netting, clear cellophane, or even just a colorful bow to adorn your gift. Be sure to include a handwritten welcome card, and whenever possible, personally take the gift to the home and officially "warm" it with your good wishes.
Whatever your gift choice, make is something appropriate for you and for the recipients. There's nothing more discouraging than to receive a huge Victorian swan planter when your entire home is black and white contemporary. It's better receive something predictible rather than something inappropriate.
Here are our favorite -- and not so favorite -- gift ideas for housewarmings...
The Good
Give Something Classic
Simple beauty never goes out of style. A silver picture frame, a cut crystal bud vase, or a beautiful clock are objects that can fit into almost any home. Make it special by buying it in your friend's favorite store, or go all out and shop at Tiffany, Neiman Marcus, or other specialty store. For an extra touch, fill the frame with a personal photo, place a rose in the bud vase, or engrave the object with the move-in date.
Add to a Collection
Choose an object that your friends can add to a treasured collection -- things like an antique tin, a white ironstone bowl, or a silver napkin ring are possibilities for some collectors. Then add a little something extra to the gift... perhaps a mini box of truffles inside the tin, some wonderful tea in the ironstone bowl, or a small bouquet of flowers cinched with the napkin ring.
Gift Baskets
Choose a theme appropriate for your recipients and have fun putting together something creative. Just choose a themed container, several appropriate pieces to place inside, and tie it all up in cellophane and a pretty bow. Use package shred or crinkled tissue to cushion the items if necessary.
-- Gardening Bucket with garden tools, gloves, seeds, pruners, and gardening magazines
-- Just Add Water with a vase, stem cutters, floral design book, and a big bunch of fresh flowers
-- Paint Party in a Paint Tray with paint rollers, brushes, drop cloths, tape, 5 in 1 Tool
-- Starter Tool Box with tape measure, hammer, screwdriver, pliers, and assorted nails
-- Picture Hanging Kit with picture hangers and wire, nails, tape measure, level, and plumb line
-- Dinner Kit with a casserole, plates, utensils, paper cups, and a bottle of sparkling cider
-- Emergency Chocolate Kit for incurable chocoholics -- a candy tin or a basket, and a variety of chocolate candy, truffles, cookies, or freshly baked goods made of -- you guessed it -- chocolate !
Make Something Special
Gif the gift of yourself by presenting something you've made. Perhaps a flavored vinegar, shaped topiary, painted welcome sign, fireplace starters, a flower arrangement or an Easy Fruit Arrangment .
Toasting Flutes
Add to their wedding crystal, or choose unique toasting flutes especially for the occasion. Tie the stems with pretty bows, and include a bottle of bubbly to toast your friends in their new home.
Bridal Registry
Newly married couples can be easy to shop for since you may still be able to choose items from their wedding registry. If the registered gifts have all been given, you can look it over for clues to their chosen color scheme and style preference, then make appropriate gift choices that will fit into their decor. Consider placemats to go with their china, an additional setting or two of everyday dishes, or an alternate choice of colored glassware.
