The Best Present in the World The BestPresent in the World The following Readers' Theatre script was adapted from "The very best present in the world" written by PenelopeBender. It was rewritten by Pansy Koh Hwee Lin, Kow Hui Meng,Jamunah Rani and Lam May Yuen to suit the Singapore context. Narrator: Today is her mother's birthday and May isvery troubled because she does not have enough money to buy her muma present. May: 75, 80, 85 cents. (Sigh!) This is only enough tobuy the bottlecap of Mummy's favourite Chanel No. 5 perfume. What am I going to do? Narrator: May flips through the New Paper and saw a hugeadvertisement. May: (Reading the newspaper aloud) Guess the number ofCoke cans contest. 12 - 3 p.m. Grand prize: $200. Winner will beannounced at 3:30 p.m. today. Wow! That's just what I need... if only I could win ... Narrator: May went down to Cold Storage to join thecontest. May: What a huge crowd gathering around the contestarea! Wait a minute. Isn't that my classmate, Janice? Narrator: May walked up to Janice. May: Hi, Janice, what are you doing here? Janice: Hi, May! I came to join the contest. May: Me too. I'm going to get the contest formnow. See you later! May: (Thinking aloud) Gosh! There are rows and rows ofCoke cans piled up high like a pyramid. How am I going to startcounting them? Narrator: After hesitating for a very long time, May finallydecided to make her guess. May: I think I'll write 9,999 cans on the contestform. Please God ... please let that be the lucky number! Narrator: After dropping the entry form into the box, Maywaited impatiently for the results to be announced. At 3:30 p.m.,the emcee stood up and announced that the number of Coke cans wasNine thousand, nine hundred ... May held her breath ... andninety-nine. May: I won! I won! Narrator: May collected her prize joyfully. As she walkedout of Cold Storage, she met Janice again at the bus-stop. May: Oh, Janice! I won the grand prize! I'm goingto Takashimaya now to get a present for my mum. It's herbirthday. Janice: (Sadly) I'm very happy for you. May: (Concerned) But, you don't sound very happy. Is anythingwrong? Janice: (Sobbing) My ... my ... mother is very ill at home and shecan't get out of bed. I went to the clinic near my house butDr. Tan would not make house calls unless I pay $200. Butwe've no money. I'm really afraid of losing mum. She's all I have since daddy passed away. May: (In deep thought) Oh, dear! That's terrible. (A shortpause) What do you intend to do? Janice: I don't know. Narrator: May gazed at the prize money in her purse. After deliberatingfor a short while, she pressed the money into Janice'shands. May: Here, take this. Go and get Dr. Tan right away! Janice: But ... but ... you need this for your mum's birthdaypresent. May: Don't worry, it's okay. She'llunderstand. Janice: Oh! Thank you so much! Thank you so much! I'm sure my mumwill pay you back when she gets well. Narrator: Janice rushed back to her mum while May walked home slowly. Sheis happy that she had done a good deed but worried about hermother's birthday present. May: (Dejectedly) What should I do? I still don't have anypresent for Mum's birthday. Guess I'll just make a cardfor her. The card won't mean much without a present but ...it'll have to do. Narrator: That night, at the birthday party, May'sbrother gave their mother a gold necklace and her sister gave hermum a Versace bag. May: Mummy, I wanted to give you a present, but thiscard is all I have. Mother: But, May ... You've already given me apresent. Janice called and told me what you had done. You see, sweetheart, all the presents in the world wouldn't mean asmuch to me as knowing that you've understood what I'vebeen teaching you. May: What's that, Mummy? Mother: How to love, May. And that's the bestpresent in the whole world that any child could ever give to aparent. May: Do you mean it, Mummy? I wanted so much to giveyou the very best present in the world. Mother: Of course, I do, sweetheart. You have indeed givenme the very best present in the whole world and I'm veryproud of you! May: Oh ... Oh! Mummy, I'm so happy! Rather than simply doing the projects on paper, you can stampthem with fabric paint onto t-shirts or napkins. You can arrange them onpaper and cover with clear contact paper to make placemats. Or you cantrace onto craft foam, cut out and glue to make wall hangings and Christmas treeornaments. Here's a list of hand and footprint Christmas projects on thesite: Angel Handprint and Footprint Craft with Poem Christmas Handprint Wreath Christmas Tree Handprint Craft Rudolf Hand and Foot Craft If you would like to add to the project, we have a variety of handprint poems to go with your craft. Here are some more thoughts that viewers have sent in: I have a home daycare with kids the ages of 0-7. Some christmas gift we have made are. Handprint wreath on burlap with a wooden dowel to make it a banner. I just painted the kids hands green and helped them place it in a circle then I painted their thumb red to make berries. I also took blue felt and painted their feet white and had them stand on the felt then painted their hands white and and placed them out next to the top of their feet. This makes an angel. We also glued fake doll hair on the balls of the feet and wiggle eyes under the hair. We have also traced their hands onto fusible web then fused the hand prints to different types of christmas fabric, then I cut out the handprints and fused them to a piece of Christmas fabric in the shape of a tree with the hands pointing downward. I also made this product a banner with a dowel. Another idea I had is to trace my kids hands out of constructions paper and put it in the center of the plate and on the edge put their name and the date. I think that would make a great Christmas gift for grandparents. One idea that worked very well was to make the child's handprints in dough that is bakeable ( self-hardening ). Put the year and child's name on it along with a hanger on the back. I had a parent call me when she opened the gift on Christmas day, in tears. Said it was the best thing she could have every gotten because although she always wanted to do this, she put it off and had we not done it, her child would have grown up before she did it herself.
birthday present. Me and
My Birthday Present My Birthday Present At A Glance Author rebecca Contact rreilly12@hotmail.com When It just happened Artist andres Studio monster Location san pedro, costa rica My birthday was on April 12th, but I found that I couldn't celebrate it as I was at the time involved in "Hairspray", my high school's musical for the year. My schedule was very hectic and I found that I had forgotten my birthday, and so had my parents. And so time passed, I finished the musical, and I decided that I wanted to give myself a birthday present. Me and some other friends involved in Hairspray found ourselves with nothing to do seeing as all of our time had been spent rehearsing. Yesterday I went with my friend Erica to the mall, and we planned on seeing a movie. We looked at our options for a movie, but our options consisted of idiotic movies, such as Miss Congeniality 2 and Son of the Mask, so we wandered around the mall for a while, had a few cigarettes, and then wandered some more. We were completely bored by this time, but I had to be there until 10:30 to wait for my younger sister who was there with her friends. Suddenly, Erica mentioned the fact that she had always wanted a labret piercing, and I decided on the spot that we should go and get pierced right now, that very day and get back to the mall in time to pick up my sister. I immediately called a cab so that we couldn't back out of it. We waited for the cab and shared a cigarette to calm our nerves, as my hands were already shaking and she said that she had the butterflies. I could relate. We were sitting in the cab and I tried to decide which piercing I would get. I wanted to get a vertical labret, but I had promised another friend that we would do that together, so that was automatically out. My tragus? I had already done my inner conch, and I wasn't in the mood to take care of another thick cartilage piercing in my ear. My nipples are also on the waiting line, but I'm waiting for my best friend to come down so that he can be there. Then it struck me... I should get my nose pierced! My father would kill me. This was to be my first facial piercing and I didn't know how he would react. However, my mother would most likely scold me, but secretly like it. So I decided just to go for it. I was doing it for me. It was my birthday present to myself. We stepped into the mall and I took Erica to Monster, a small store which sells clothes as well as does piercings and tattoos. I always loved the vibe of the store. I walked up to Andres and greeted him. I told him that I would like my nose done and that Erica wanted her labret. Erica wanted to go first because she was afraid that if she saw me do it first, she would chicken out. I'm glad it turned out that way because labret piercings hurt much less than nose piercings, and I didn't want her to be afraid. This was her first major piercing. So I held her hand as he did her piercing. It was done very quickly, and I was up. I sat on a metal stool and waited for him to retrieve the sterilized jewelry. A new needle in a package was produced, as well as many other utensils, including a toothpick so he could mark me. When he did, he asked me to look in the mirror to check and see if I liked it. It looked a bit high up to me, but he was the professional so I just let it go. He took out the needle and I gripped Erica's hand. I closed my eyes, and I felt him place the needle on my nose and break the first layer of skin. "Take a deep breath, and exhale." I was sweating. It was hot in the store, but I knew that I was responsible. "Inhale, Exhale." I tightened my grasp on Erica's hand. "Now take a deep breath and hold it!" Oh no! Panic sets in. He shoved the needle through my nose and man, did it HURT! My eyes were watering and my nose was burning. Then the burning subsided and I opened my eyes. I saw that in the mirror there was a needle sticking out diagonally in my nose. It looked so incredible! But then came the part that I feared the most. I've read on BME that putting the jewelry in hurts the most. It was worse than I expected. I think that the jewelry hurt more than the actual piercing. I was on the second day of my period, so my nose wouldn't stop bleeding. Andres explained it, but I can't quite recall his reasoning. I was too happy to pay proper attention. So Erica and I paid and then went to take pictures of our fresh piercings. I'm looking forward to taking care of it and waiting for it to heal so that I can change the stud. I would have preferred a ring, but that would most definitely be out of the question, both at school and with my parents. Now that I look at it in the mirror, I wish that I had told him to move it a bit lower down, but everybody thinks that it looks good where it is.
