It is accompanied by a short story that will add to the sentimental aspect of the gift, and it has a cool re-usable leather box to ensure it's a keepsake gift. Now all you need to do is make sure you keep his or her special feelings burning like the candle's flame, and then a second date will be guaranteed. Italian Lavender-Scented Stones Price: $18 Buy at: www.redenvelope.com Why: These pretty-smelling stones are is a gift that lasts forever and ever, unlike a clichéd bouquet of flowers. Groovy, man! Day Spa Basket Price: $42 Buy at: www.redenvelope.com Why: This gift says “take time out for yourself, you deserve it.” A neatly woven basket, jam-packed with Tipton Charles spa treats, it's the perfect “take a break” gift. You will seem like an open-hearted person when delivering this thoughtful gift. Your Favorite Indie Movie Price: $12-30 Buy at: www.iFilm.com Why: Hopefully you and your date will share similar movie preferences (tip - don't buy them a kung-fu movie, or the latest slasher pic, if you have any doubt whether they like that kind of thing!). Naturally, when you give your date a DVD or video, it's most likely that you'll get invited back to watch the movie with him or her. So, then you two can cuddle up, while watching a romantic movie, or laugh hysterically at a comedy. Either way, you are enjoying each other's company. Share Your Favorite Book Price: Varies Buy at: Borders, Barnes and Noble Why: Your taste in books can help your date get to know the 'real' you, because there’s nothing like a good book. One can tell a lot from the type of book a person likes, and perhaps if you both have a similar taste in page-turners, then you will move on to the next chapter in your blossoming romance. Hersheys Bear Price: $32.99 Buy at: www.giftsense.com Why: This is a “to-die-for” teddy bear, with a squeezable plush body. Man or woman, you’ll definitely go all soft and gooey for this adorable, huggable, stuffed bear. His fluffy hands hold an enlarged stuffed Hershey’s Kiss and a 7” solid chocolate kiss accompanies the 13” tall teddy as well. This gift is sweet all the way around, and certainly will bring a big smile to your date’s face. You Brighten My Day Cookies Price: $39.99 Buy at: www.giftsense.com Why: This mouth-watering gift comes with six enormous assorted flavored cookies. And you can even add your own personalized message... The sun décor says “you brighten my day” which is a cute way to let your date know how you feel. Moreover, after devouring the fresh baked cookies, courtesy of the Blooming Cookies kitchens, the ceramic vase can be used in the household or office as a flower pot... Nice. 24kt gold Dipped Rose Price: $59 Buy at: www.romanceher.com Why:If you can't say it with flowers, say it with a solid Gold flower! This gift will totally express your creative romantic side too. It is absolutely keepsake material and will look nice in any room in your date’s house. Top Ten Gifts
Top Ten Gifts Moms Want Top Ten Gifts Moms Want Katy Abel What do women really want? It's a question that's been handed down through the ages. And now, as we prepare to salute Moms, we find ourselves pondering it even more. Godiva truffles? Breakfast in bed? A pink corsage? According to a highly un scientific survey of both veteran and new Moms, the answer is "none of the above." So for the genuinely puzzled and the completely clueless, we offer the gift of a "Top 10 List." These are things to do or buy that are guaranteed to move Mother's Day far beyond the usual flowers and chocolates. Go Ahead: Make My (own) Bed It's a gift mom Margot O'Toole treasured for weeks, even though it was nothing she could sniff, swallow, or try on. One Mother's Day morning, her young son Brendan simply announced that effectively immediately, he would begin to make his own bed every day.And he did, at least, for a matter of weeks. It meant more to Margot than all the cards and flowers received before or since. Take Out and Hang Out Claire Cahill, mother of three-year-old triplets Meaghan, Kimberly and Matthew, remembers the year she and her husband tried to take all three babies - and her mother - out to eat on Mother's Day. "It was absolutely horrible," she says, shuddering at the memory. "We'd made reservations, and even so we had to stand and wait for a table. We'd called ahead for three high chairs; when we got there, they didn't have any! So we sat with the kids on our laps and it was very stressful. "Sometimes people try to make it so special a day that it goes the other way. So last year we got Chinese takeout and just hung around the house taking pictures of the kids. We had such a good time that we're going to do it again this year!" Home Alone Of course you should spend time with her. But maybe Mom would love to be...left alone! One of the greatest gifts a mother can receive is a "coupon" for a day off. Hubby takes the kids and head for the hills one morning. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Mom soaks in a hot tub, curls up by the fire with a good book, or invites a long-neglected friend over for lunch. Ahhhh....the sounds of silence. Shhhh. Say It With...Trees Most communities have garden clubs or beautification committees. Some sell trees and shrubs as a fundraiser. Buying a tree or plant for Mom, then planting it with her in the yard, is a fun activity to do with children and a lasting tribute. Take It To The Streets "Mother's Day isn't about chocolates, it's about taking care of our children," says M.J. Gregoire, one of the local organizers for the Million Mom March in Washington D.C. She and thousands of other moms have boarded buses - with kids in tow - to head to the nation's capital in a mass show of support for tougher gun control laws. If you'd like to accompany or send your Mom to this year's Million Mom March (with her permission of course), visit millionmommarch.com. A Blast From Her Past "I'd love nothing more than to return to my high school with my two (grown) children, and have us all sing together in the annual alumni concert," says Vinny A., mother of two and grandmother of three. Why not spend Mother's Day making a trip down Mom's own Memory Lane, with brunch at the hotel where she once danced with Dad, or tickets to a musical revived from "her" era? This Is Your Life Here's a great activity to do with kids: make a book about Mom's life! The simplest materials will do - construction paper folded, cut and stapled - illustrations done with paint, crayons, markers, and/or photos. This is a good excuse to call Mom's mom or other far-flung relatives for details on the naughty escapades of her childhood or college adventures. Basketweaving 101 Whether she's got a toddler or a teen, most mothers need - and seldom get - a night out. Sign up Mom for a course at a local community college or adult education program: Something fun! How about an Introduction to Chilean Wines, The Fine Art of Bellydancing, or Feng Shui? Say Cheese It's not in the cheap category, but if you're ready to go for broke, a professionally done family portrait would top any Mom's wish list. Remember Moms In Need Each year, the Women's Lunch Place in Boston hosts a special Mother's Day party for homeless and impoverished women.Guests enjoy a special meal of steak tips and scallops, dance to music provided by a live band, and receive corsagesand other gifts. "It came out of a realization that a lot of our guests have lost their families," explains Erin Kelly, fundraising coordinator for the day shelter. "This is a way we could show them that they are still special." Donors pay $25-35 to have a specially designed card sent to their own Moms, with a message saying that a donation to the Women's Lunch Place has been made in their name. (For more information, visit www.womenslunchplace.org. Donations in your mom's name - to her favorite charity - are a wonderful way to sustain the meaning of Mother's Day throughout the year! Third in the list of most-hated birthday presents is bath salts, followed by decorative plates and tight-fitting clothing. Eight out of 10 Americans (82 percent) said it is sometimes difficult to find an ideal birthday gift for a friend or family member. While the average U.S. family spends $750 per year on birthday presents, half of all birthday gifts are never used. Americans are wasting millions of dollars buying unsuitable birthday gifts which are never used. Even gift vouchers make you look as though you have not gone to any effort to choose an appropriate birthday gift, said Shlomo Shaul, publisher of Star Stories personalized horoscope books. "I got so many scented candles and bath oils one year, I thought my friends were trying to tell me I stunk," said one research participant. The full list is available at: www.star-stories.com I happen to LOVE scented candles, but usually only Yankee Candles, which smell GREAT. I also like bath salts. I do not wear col ogne since I am nursing. Since star stories are trying to sell a product, I am not sure how much faith to put into this story. Still, I have to wonder. Last Christmas, my MIL gave me a scented candle for my present. My SIL, who drew my name in the family exchange, gave me TWO scented candles. My husband gave me two scented candles--my only Christmas Gift from him. What does this say about me? Written by hestiahomeschool . I love candles and it does not matter what a person gives me. Also I never expect a present from anyone. All I want from others is friendship. To me that is the best present given. That is why I started a journal in the first place was to meet people and make friends and I sure hope you and I can be good friends. I love your journal and writing style BTW. I will be back to catch up on your life. :) Anita http://edit.journals.aol.com/ ginskia/whatdescribesanitaasan itaasanind Comment from ginskia - 9/7/04 3:45 PM we did dirty santa last Christmas at the in laws.Everyone buys a gift and you draw #'s to pick a gift out.My sil took 3 sets of candles for 3 gifts,1 from her, the dh and her daughter- it was funny cause the men ended up with the candles and they did not want them.Even the women did not want them.I like candles but these had no smell at all- I have a feeling that they will end up being re gifts this year! : ) ~ Anita Comment from apropst1 - 9/6/04 3:05 PM Ya I like scented candels too..have you ever smelled soy candels...I just bought some and they really have a nice scent to them.
