Getting married on 08/26 and I'm in need of some groomsmen gifts for six guys, ranging in age from 23 through 35. Two play golf, two don't drink, two don't live at their own place... So it rules out the golf stuff, flasks & mugs, or personalized art. Aside from that, it's getting late in the game and I'm still lost for ideas. I'm looking to spend $35-50 on each, and have already looked around for decent tickets to sporting events they'd all enjoy, as well as some of the more normal stuff out there. Trouble is, I want something decent and unique, without being useless for them. Any suggestions out there? Maybe you could put the keychain in a men's trinket box or men's valet that could be engraved (you could check out Things Remembered). I found a nice men's keepsake box for $26 at weddingchannel.com. How about a sports picture, you know like a picture of their favorite football, baseball, or basketball player or team. Even the guys who don't have their own place might like it (I'm assuming they have their own room). Those are easy to find, you can even get them at the mall and they fit within your budget. All guys I know like sports memorabilia. Don't stress too much. I'm sure whatever you decide on will be wonderful. Guys usually aren't too picky anyway (but they sure are hard to shop for). At the store where I bought my dress, I saw silver plated computer mice that you could get engraved with their initials, which is cool if any of them are into computers or gaming. I mentioned it to FH and he said that they would be thrown on the scrap heap if they weren't optical (picky silly techies...) but it's worth the suggestion. How the Novint Falcon Works Users hold onto the handle of the Novint Falcon, which moves left and right, and forwards and backwards, like a computer mouse, but which also moves up and down. The interchangeable handle, or end effector can come in many shapes and forms. As the Novint Falcon is moved, the computer keeps track of a 3D cursor. When the 3D cursor touches a virtual object, the computer registers contact with that object, and updates currents to motors in the device to create an appropriate force to the devices handle, which the user feels. The computer updates the position of the device, and updates the currents to the motors a thousand times a second (i.e. at a 1 kilohertz rate), providing a very realistic sense of touch. The 3 electrical motors are connected to the 3 arms extending out of the device, 1 motor connected to each arm. The 3 arms are connected to the devices handle. At any given cycle, or 1/1000 th of a second, the device can create a force on the handle in any direction of any magnitude, up to the maximum force. As an example of how one would touch a virtual object, when a 3D cursor touches a virtual sphere, there is a force normal (perpendicular) to the surface. The device therefore pushes in the radial direction away from the center of the sphere, proportional to how hard the user pushes against the sphere. The computer keeps track of the direction of the force (based on the position of the cursor) and the amount of the force, 1000 times a second which lets the user slide the 3D cursor across the surface of the sphere, giving it a consistent smooth feel. The effect is that the cursor, and therefore device, physically cannot move through the sphere, and it is actually a virtual solid object. When one looks at the Novint Falcon itself (rather than the cursor and sphere graphics on the computer screen), one can see the invisible sphere in the haptic workspace where the haptic device cannot move it is really there, and you can really touch it! Additionally, other forces and algorithms can be used to give the sphere texture, dynamic properties (i.e. it can bounce like a ball), deformability, or a variety of other effects.
