Figure A Figure B Figure C Q : I'm a big gift giver, but even the coolest wrapping paper gets boring after a while. I'm creative and would love suggestions on new gift-wrapping ideas. A : (Debbie Stapley, Ask DIY Crafts expert) There are lots of creative ideas out there, from a new take on tissue paper to a way to wrap a present like a piece of candy. Just follow these directions. Materials for Tie-Dye Tissue Paper: Tissue paper Eyedroppers Food coloring in several colors Cookie sheet Place to hang wet tissue Materials for Designer Lunch Sack: Brown paper sacks Stencils (optional) Fabric scraps Paper-backed adhesive Hole punch Ribbon or raffia Iron Dimensional paint Materials for Hard-Candy Look: Solid wrapping paper Cellophane Various ribbon sizes for candy-wrapper stripes Double-stick tape Materials for Chocolate-Kiss Look: Paper plate Tinfoil Slip of white paper Tie-Dye Tissue Paper : Cover your work surface with old newspapers so that you don't get food coloring all over. Set a folded piece of tissue paper on a cookie sheet. "Paint" the paper by dripping streaks of food coloring from eyedroppers, using a new dropper for each shade ( figure A ). Hang the paper to dry, clothesline-style. Designer Lunch Sack : Use stencils to draw a pattern on the paper side of some paper-backed adhesive ( figure B ), or do it freehand. Iron the adhesive patterns on the back side of the fabric scraps you plan to use, and then trim the fabric to the pattern of the adhesive. Peel off the adhesive paper to reveal the sticky side of the fabric, and then center the fabric cutout on the paper bag. Iron the fabric in place with an iron set on medium -- it takes about five seconds to set. If you like, use dimensional paint to add faux "stitches" around the fabric edges. Also punch two holes in the top of the bag, front and back, so you can thread some ribbon or raffia through to tie in a bow. This looks pretty and will also keep the bag closed. Hard-Candy Wrapper : Wrap the gift in a cylinder shape with plain paper. Using clear tape and ribbon, add some stripes of different widths to the package ( figure C ). Wrap the striped package with clear cellophane, tying the ends hard-candy-style with more ribbon. Chocolate-Kiss Wrapping : Set the gift on an inexpensive paper plate. Set the plate on a sheet of aluminum foil, and then draw the sides up and squeeze them together at the top, so they look like a chocolate kiss. Before you squeeze the top closed, slip in a paper label (like the ones on Hershey's kisses) to serve as the gift tag. More questions for Debbie: Q : I love the way gift bags look when I buy them in stores, but when I make them at home they seem flat and a bit empty. What's the secret? A : If your gift doesn't fill the bag, make it look fuller by wadding up paper or tissue paper in the bottom of the bag. To fill out the top of an open bag, grasp a piece of tissue paper in the center and smooth the ends down a little bit to form a loose cone shape. Then upend it and put it into the bag. You may need several pieces of tissue paper to fill out the top of the bag. Q : I'm giving my sister a camera lens for her birthday, and I'm looking for a unique way to wrap it. Any ideas? A : Why not wrap it in a decorative photo box? That way, the wrapping becomes part of the gift. Q : My bridge club gives gifts, and there's a competition among the ladies to make the gifts stand out. What can I do to win the contest? A : Buy a pretty scarf and wrap the box in it -- tying the four corners knapsack-style. Annual Funds Endowed Funds Current Use Gifts Deferred Gifts Annual Funds Annual funds are current-use financial resources used to support priority programs not covered through state funding. Many donors choose to designate their annual gifts to the College's Fund for Excellence. The Dean of the College annually determines the priorities for this fund. In recent years it has supported our minority student recruitment efforts, enriched student leadership programs, and enhanced technology training for student and faculty. Annual fund dollars can also be designated to the William Chandler Bagley Scholars Program. Entirely funded through private gifts, this program enables us to provide merit-based scholarships and fellowships to some of our most talented students. During 2002-2003 academic year, 37 students directly benefited from this program. Wherever you designate your annual fund gift, you can be assured that your donation is going directly to support the research, teaching and service missions of the College of Education. With no minimum gift, this is a great way to begin your investing in the College of Education. Endowed Funds Endowed funds are gifts large enough to generate yearly income. The principal remains intact through investment and only the interest is used. Endowed funds are attractive because they guarantee that financial resources will be available for years to come. Generally, endowed funds are named in recognition of the donor or donors. The size of the donation to establish a permanently endowed fund is determined by the purpose of the gift (i.e. scholarship, professorship, etc...) as well as by current financial market considerations. To learn more about creating an endowed fund you can visit the University of Illinois Foundation web site or contact one of the College gift officers. Current Use Gifts Current use gifts can be put to use by the College immediately upon receipt from the donor. Examples might include a newly endowed scholarship, a one-time gift to purchase new computers for one of our departments, or a donation to one of our Annual Funds. When you hear the words current use, it basically means a gift that can be put into immediate action. Deferred Gifts Deferred gifts are ones that are designed to be put to use at a future time. While these gift agreements may be made at any time, the execution schedule of the donation is the result of careful planning that integrates the donor's charitable gift into his or her overall financial, tax, and estate planning objectives in order to maximize the benefits for both the donor and the College. The story brings the two together, with a little mystery as a subplot. Great secondary charachters that fill out the story line. A few things are unrealistic, I'd tell you but I don't want to give away the storyline. All in all, a B+. The second story, Her Secret Santa-I just loved this story. Ms. Declaire writes so well I feel as if Jacq actually exisits-I can see her in my mind. Mathias falls for Jacq but he's hiding a secret-he knows she is a renowed children's author-a fact she is trying to hid. Will she forgive him when she finds out he knows? At first, I thought how can anyone fall in love in a week but keep reading the story, the plot thickens and fills out and you see the big picture-I want to tell you but I'll let you find out for yourself!
