Groomsmen Gifts? | Ask MetaFilter Thursday, September 22, 2005 2:58 PM PST Ask MetaFilter Home MetaFilter MetaTalk Post a new question Search Ask MetaFilter Ask MeFi Archives April 4, 2005 I'm to be married at the end of the month, any suggestions for Groomsmen gifts that are non-ordinary? I've seen the standard knife, cigar, flask, lighter, poker, et all, gift recommendations. I'm looking for some more interesting items that are effervescent while not ephemeral. Right now I'm considering some Airsoft rifles and 2000 rounds for battle, but anything else is certainly welcome. What did you do for your Groomsmen? Price is not an consideration - give me your mind. posted by ix to society & culture at 3:37 PM PST ( wedding gift groomsmen ) The best Groomsmen's gift I have recieved was a nice hi-tech leatherman-like tool. Use it to this day. posted by qwip at 3:42 PM PST on April 4 I gave my best man a fairly expensive wrist watch. (I had a small ceremony, so there were no groomsmen.) posted by crunchland at 4:14 PM PST on April 4 Weird. I've posted this twice in one day: took them all out for a barbershop shave before the wedding. posted by turbodog at 4:23 PM PST on April 4 My wife and I got married in Mexico in Spring 2003. Since we knew we were having a Mexican-themed reception later that summer for all the family and friends who couldn't make it to Mexico with us, we decided to bring back 200 shot glasses as wedding favours. (You can imagine the looks we got at the gift shop where we made our purchase! I'm sure I heard someone say "Gringo Loco" as we walked out.) Slight tangent but we had an ulterior motive to giving out shot glasses. We didn't want to "pass the boot" as some couples do to get cash donations towards a honeymoon. Instead we had our Best Man and Maid of Honour sell shots of tequila and Baja Rosa throughout the night with donations being collected in a sombrero. We made a few pesos from this idea and were even able to go back to Mexico the following year with some of the money. As for groomsmen gifts, everyone in our wedding party (Best Man, Maid-of-Honour, MC) plus my sister and her husband and my wife's brother got a shot glass but, to get a big laugh from the crowd, we also gave them over-sized cocktail glasses. I can't find a photo online but have seen them at Michael's Craft stores, Wal-Mart, Zeller's (Canada only) and Home Outfitters (Canada-only as well I think but there are likely similar stores wherever you are if not in Canuck-land.) posted by Jaybo at 4:37 PM PST on April 4 I found a photo of the oversized glasses we gave our wedding party. If you're not going for a serious, sombre reception (we weren't), a gift like this can be a big hit (I didn't just crop this photo for privacy reasons - these two had a pretty glazed look in the original!) posted by Jaybo at 4:59 PM PST on April 4 We got everyone in our wedding party clocks. We sought out interesting and one of a kind clocks for each person. Another great idea I've seen is artwork. I'm a photographer, and last year a couple bought two prints from my studio to give to members of their wedding party. I thought that was a very sweet gift, as long as you know everyone's taste. posted by SobaFett at 5:00 PM PST on April 4 As a groomsman I received an expensive watch. I gave it back. I stopped wearing watches in high school. The sun comes up, it goes down. At another wedding, I received a Swiss knife. Best present ever. Still have it, though I use the Squirt now as my primary knife. Love the barbershop shave comment, put me down for "events" rather than "items." Unless it's a knife! stab stab posted by user92371 at 5:02 PM PST on April 4 - A nice camera - One of those iPod thingies I hear so much about and/or a set of nice headphones (nice headphones are a great thing) - Watches and Leathermen (Leathermans?) are great ideas - An attractive CD box set (These make great gifts, I find.) - a nice bottle of wine/liquor - take 'em out for a nice fancy meal - tickets to a concert or sporting event Personally, if I were a groomsman, I'd be weirded out to receive any sort of armament, but maybe that's just me. posted by Dr. Wu at 5:04 PM PST on April 4 My brother gave out Maglite flashlights -- the big ones that take 6 D batteries. I use mine a lot and it'll last forever. posted by hydrophonic at 5:07 PM PST on April 4 We went with these , engraved with the name of each groomsman -- written as "Mr. [lastname]" instead of a first name or initials. Turned out really cool. posted by grabbingsand at 5:11 PM PST on April 4 No new ideas here, just some feedback on others' comments.... As an iPod owner, I've got to say that if I were given an iPod shuffle, I'd probably make a point of using it while working out, so I think that's not a bad idea by any means. Also, as a non-smoker, I would keep (and occasionally use, and appreciate) a Zippo lighter if I were given one. On preview, ditto the Maglite. posted by kimota at 5:51 PM PST on April 4 If you're on a lower budget, one of those little LCD flashlights. Much more useful than a maglite IMHO. posted by alms at 5:57 PM PST on April 4 My brother went to his local Harbor Freight and lugged home a half dozen shiny new 24", 10 pound Crescent wrenches. Had them engraved with name, date and stuff. Reasonable price and gag appeal. It'll come in handy if I ever get a bulldozer or tanker ship. posted by klarck at 5:59 PM PST on April 4 Of all the gifts I've been given, the one I appreciate the most is an engraved Swiss-army knife . It's been on my keychain for more than a decade now. Leathermans (the chapless kind, unless you're into that sort of thing) are cool too. posted by bonehead at 6:09 PM PST on April 4 I was a groomsman at gompa's wedding which took place in Alberta-- which, for those who don't know, is like a Canadian version of Texas. So all us groomsmen received fantastically huge silver belt buckles with our initials on them. I'm wearing mine now! So depending on where you're holding the wedding, you could tie the gift/activity into the region... much like Jaybo and his Mexican-themed tequila-filled shot glasses. Also, I was a groomsman at theinsectsarewaiting's wedding, where we all received a great big Swiss Army Knife (like user92371 ) and a leather holder. At that wedding there was also a groomswoman and she lucked out: she got the groomsman's gift (the knife) and also the bridesmaid's gift (silver bracelet.) And also: Congratulations! posted by Fuzzy Monster at 6:16 PM PST on April 4 Whoops-- sorry, bonehead . Somehow I missed your comment on preview. I didn't mean to leave you out of the "we got knives" round-up. posted by Fuzzy Monster at 6:20 PM PST on April 4 STHORDS! posted by Baby_Balrog at 6:31 PM PST on April 4 Engraved pewter steins. Tattoos. A chef's knife. A croquet set. Engraved boulles. A wooden box of silk ties. Cuban-heeled boots - spurs optional. Rod and tackle for trout fishing. A bottle of Grange. Leather jackets. A home gym. Mountain bikes. Ray-ban aviator shades. Bathrobes. A six-shooter. Flying lessons. posted by obiwanwasabi at 6:35 PM PST on April 4 There are some good suggestions here, but I'd just add a note of caution: Don't get a leatherman or a pocket knife or anything like it if any of your groomsmen is going to have to take an airplane home. Many people don't check luggage if they're only going to be gone for a short while, and you can't put things like that in your carry-on or the TSA will take them away (assuming you're in the U.S.). posted by cerebus19 at 7:04 PM PST on April 4 I bought hand carved boxes in India the month before the wedding, line them with cedar and installed hydrometers and humidifier, then ordered mixed sampler sets of cigars and filled the boxes with them. posted by beowulf573 at 8:02 PM PST on April 4 I once received a Klein bottle made of glass. Wow, I didn't know until today that it was so expensive! posted by Aknaton at 12:04 AM PST on April 5 Hip flask posted by IndigoJones at 9:46 AM PST on April 5 When I was in an outdoor wedding in sunny Southern California, the groom gave us matching sunglasses to wear during the ceremony. Editorial Reviews Amazon.com Take a pinch of psychic phenomenon, add a dash of Southern gothic, stir in a sharp cast of talented actors, and you'll come up with The Gift , director Sam Raimi's ingenious gumbo of a thriller. It doesn't hold together as well as Raimi's earlier A Simple Plan , but the two films are stylistically connected-- The Gift was cowritten (with Tom Epperson) by A Simple Plan 's costar, Billy Bob Thornton, who in turn draws from the Deep South milieu that informed his own Sling Blade and his earlier collaboration with Epperson, One False Move . A similar sense of mystery permeates The Gift , in which a small-town Georgia psychic (perfectly played by Cate Blanchett) is tormented by tragic loss and visions connected to the murder of a local vamp (Katie Holmes) whose schoolteacher fiancé (Greg Kinnear) is a prime suspect. Other suspects include a hot-tempered bully (Keanu Reeves) whose battered wife (Hilary Swank) is one of the psychic's regular clients, and a traumatized local (Giovanni Ribisi) who is tenuously stabilized by therapy and antidepressants. While this trio of potential killers keeps the mystery alive, the requisite red herrings don't add much to the film's low-level suspense. Instead, Raimi is far more effective in creating an atmosphere of anxious dread that wells up from each of these finely drawn characters, starting with the widow psychic's extended mourning for her lost husband, the agonized terror of a beaten wife, and the percolating anger of a cuckolded spouse. All of this makes The Gift a worthy showcase for its esteemed cast, even as its plot twists grow increasingly familiar. --Jeff Shannon --This text refers to the Theatrical Release edition. Blanchett plays a clairvoyant woman in a small town, tarot cards and all, but thankfully she isn't shown to be omniscient and in fact makes lots of mistakes which people with better education or just greater knowledge could have avoided. An interesting turn of events lead to a murder, and almost anyone of the many characters could have been culpable. Katie Holmes plays the gorgeous victim, which only makes it twice as sweet! The suspense is contagious, the acting very convincing, and the background score is superb. Had me glued almost until the end, I did predict about 20 mins before the denouement who the killer could be, but that isn't too bad! I guess the movie's power lies in its character studies which happen to be wrapped in a homicide. Highly recommend this immaculate blend of high-octane drama and supernatural horror. At the very least, it'll leave you with plenty to think about. Was this review helpful to you? The performances are notable, particularly that of Giovanni Ribisi, who plays a mentally troubled auto mechanic who is on the verge of a complete meltdown. Keanu Reeves also does a star turn, as Hilary Swank's abusive and philandering husband. Cate Blanchett is excellent as the young, impoverished widow with kids, who just happens to have psychic gifts. The always underrated Greg Kinnear gives his usual excellent performance. The action takes place in a rural Georgia town, where Cate reads cards for clients in an attempt to make ends meet. Hilary Swank is one of Cate's clients. Cate counsels her to leave her abusive and womanizing husband, played by Keanu Reeves. This just earns Cate the emnity of Keanu, who begins a campaign of terror against her. Cate also reads cards for Giovanni Ribisi, who is a standout with his dazzling performance in the role of a mentally traumatized young man, whom Cate treats kindly. Cate is called to her son's school one day, where she meets with Greg Kinnear over something her son did. While there, she meets meets his kittenish fiancee, well played by Katie Holmes, who recognizes Cate as the local psychic and asks what she sees in their future. What Cate sees does not bode well for them. When Kinnear's fiancee predictably turns up murdered, the hunt is on for her killer. The obvious suspect is Keanu Reeves, who is tried and convicted for the murder, after Cate testifies at his trial. You see, the body was found in a pond on his property, after Cate had a vision about it, and Keanu had been having an affair with her and had been the last person known to have seen the deceased alive. After the trial, however, Cate has visions that lead her to believe that the real killer has escaped justice. While there are a number of red herrings that are thrown the viewer's way, the viewer should have no trouble zeroing in on the real killer. What is surprising is the way Cate escapes death at the hands of that killer. Therein lies the real surprise. Viewers should enjoy this quirky, though interesting, film. The real star of this movie is "The Classic". , July 29, 2005 Reviewer: Lorraine Smith (Richmond,B.C. Canada)- See all my reviews If you are a Sam Raimi fan then you know that his old car is always featured somewhere in his movies. This movie is great in every aspect but especially because if features "The Classic"( which is what Sam calls this car) in almost every scene. This adds a touch of comic delight to a very tense and suspenceful movie. This role is usually filled by Bruce Campbell but in lieu of his precense "The Classic" is a worthy stand in. All kidding aside this is an excellent movie and well worth your time. Keanu Reeves gives an excellent turn as a creepy wife beater. Cate Blanchet is as always flawless. Every role is excellently cast and acted with skill by all. Sam's direction is always great and this is no exception. Was this review helpful to you? ( Report this ) Can I Return This 'Gift?' , June 16, 2005 Reviewer: L. Mintah "Lotusneko" (Illinois)- See all my reviews While The Gift has a stunning, heavyweight cast of actors and boasts a screenplay co-written by Billy Bob Thornton, who wrote and directed Sling Blade, one of the greatest movies of all time, I was disappointed at the predictable plot, cliched screenplay, and one-dimensional characters. The Gift has a few things going for it. It has great indoor sets, and builds suspense well. There were some really scary moments. It is on par with a Lifetime movie, and not a bad way to kill an afternoon. Plus, how can you resist a cast featuring Cate Blanchett, Keanu Reeves, Hilary Swank, Katie Holmes, Greg Kinnear, and Giovanni Ribisi? Cate Blanchett stars as small town psychic Annie Wilson, raising three boys as a widow. She brings in extra money by doing card readings to people in need of serious mental and sometimes physical medical care. Here come the one-dimensional characters. This plot and group is so stereotyped and overdone that it would serve well as a Whodunit audience participatory dinner theatre murder mystery. Hilary Swank is the Abused Wife. Reeves is The Wife Beater, a bully so unbelievable he also threatens little boys. Ribisi is the crazy schizoprenic. Holmes is The Slutty Society girl. I would say how slutty she is, but it would spoil the story. The makeup is also really bad in this movie. Swank sports a shiner that screams "shoe polish," and is gone without a trace next time we see her. And when Holmes' dead body is shown, she looks like a ghost in a Gothic thriller rather than a dead body. She also looks like she is playing dead. Last, but not least, gratuitous nudity to push this up to an 'R' rating. Enjoy this Lifetime type film, but don't expect more than dinner theatre. Was this review helpful to you? A brutal murder takes place and Ms. Blanchett is requested to help solve the case by the local Sheriff. Ms. Blanchett's character proves that you don't need a lot of money to still have lots of class which is a lesson most rich folks I know could benefit from. Cate is supported by a powerhouse performance by Giovanni Ribisi who plays a traumatized young man barely stablized by his medication. This movie is sad, creepy at times, but never boring. --This text refers to the VHS Tape edition Was this review helpful to you? That's hard for me to understand, because not only does it have a brilliant cast, it's a great story that holds on to you and keeps you enthralled for the entire time. It stars Cate Blanchett, Giovanni Ribisi, Greg Kinnear and Katie Holmes. It also stars Keanu Reeves in what I consider to be his best performance as a wife-beating slackjaw who constantly hurts his wife(played with trailer trash charm by Hilary Swank). There's also a brief but very intense cameo by Dennis Hopper. The basic plot is this: A murder has occurred in Blanchett's sleepy little town. No one knows who committed it and leads are slim. In desperation, the local authorities seek out Blanchett's psychic abilities to look for clues. What ensues is a haunting tale of good ol' fashion spooks, creepy sequences, and a wonderful little mystery that keeps a grip on you. Written by Billy Bob Thornton, who has a knack for capturing the good folks of the South, and Tom Epperson. Sam Raimi directs this flick and though it is nothing like his "Evil Dead" films or even his "Spiderman" flicks, you can see bits and pieces of Raimi's brilliant and off-kilter humor throughout this film. A must see for fans of a good murder mystery, suspenseful horror, or Raimi fanatics. It's got an "R" rating for a reason, that being strong language, a little nudity, and plenty of butt-whipping violence. No kiddies allowed, unless you're a dolt. Highly recommended. Romantic Advice: Valentine gifts for men Romantic Advice: Valentine gifts for men Valentine's Day gift giving can be easier if you give gifts any man can use. Here's a list of common ideas that will help you choose what is right for your love. Gift giving can sometimes get tricky, especially when the gift you purchase is not well received. Of course, you can eliminate gift giving by giving cash. However, with a little creative you can express appreciation and love on Valentine's Day by opting for a gift any man could use. 1. Tickets. Does your valentine have a favorite sports team or recording artist? If so, consider buying a front row seat to an upcoming game or performance. 2. Footwear. Whether dressy or sporty, shoes, sandals and/or athletic footwear can simultaneously fulfill a need and a want if you select a pair from your valentine's favorite designer. 3. Food. Be it breakfast, lunch or dinner, your valentine is likely to enjoy a meal if you opt for his favorite restaurant, or his favorite dish. 4. Clothes. Clothing is as personal as an individual gets, so eliminate gift rejection by either taking your valentine or a shopping spree, or wrap up a gift card or gift certificate from his favorite store. Even if you choose to stick to underwear, get creative and buy something he would love but is too shy or too cheap to buy himself. 5. Jewelry. From watches to chains to tie pins to rings, there are many great things you can buy your valentine from the jewelry department. Here, however, proceed with caution. Buy something that either can be used daily or something for a special occasion. Anything in between might just sit in a drawer until next year. 6. Hobby helps. Whatever your beau's interest, consider buying something that can be used to further enjoy his hobby. Again, since such things as golf clubs, mitts and certain balls must feel right to the user, you may want to offer a gift certificate to his favorite hobby shop. Then, too, since your reading interests may be in sharp contrast to his, consider offering a gift certificate to an online or traditional bookstore where he can choose what he likes. 7. Write stuff. Investing in your valentine by giving gifts like designer (not always expensive) pens and pencils, or other home office supplies will keep you on his mind as he uses these great instruments daily.
