Today at Home host Edye Ellis shows some creative, artistic ways to wrap gifts for any holiday or special occasion. She demonstrates how to make custom gift wrap and how to use ordinary household items such as bubble wrap, newspapers and more. Gift for a child Use old newspapers for this one. The comic section would be a perfect choice for any child. Wrap the box, then from a variety of colored pieces of construction paper, cut out some figures or designs. (One suggestion would be to trace the child's hand onto the construction paper.) Glue the construction-paper designs onto the package. A great way to top the package is to take some packing-foam peanuts, thread with colored wire and twist into any shape desired. Adorn the package with this foam-peanut creation, and children will love it. Bubble-wrap gift Who doesn't enjoy bubble wrap? Then why not use it to decorate a package. Wrap the package with tissue paper first, then apply the bubble wrap (smooth side down) with clear glue on the package. Secure the bubble wrap tightly by using tape if necessary. Decorate the package with cutout designs, placing them between the bubble wrap and the tissue paper. Wrap for odd-shape gifts For those hard-to-wrap gifts that don't have a box, consider using scarves. Place whatever you're wrapping in the center of the scarf, take two corners and tie them together and take the other two corners and tie as well. The recipient will have a gift and a scarf as an added bonus. Pieces of material (silk or whatever) can be used if a scarf is not available. Seventy-five percent of respondents in the survey plan to attend one to three weddings this year. Online wedding gift purchases has increased one percentage point since last year. Thirty-four percent of respondents have, or will, purchase wedding gifts through online retail channels. Gift registries remain strong, but experienced a six-point dip from results last year. "Consumer behavior indicates that the Web continues to be a popular channel for wedding gift shopping," said Marc Silverberg, Claria's senior director of marketing. "Analysis shows that more than a third of wedding site viewers purchased wedding gifts online with 80 percent buying their gifts from the bride and groom's registry." Retailers with the highest traffic were Target.com (39.6 percent); BedBathandBeyond.com (25.6 percent); and CrateandBarrel.com (13.9 percent). Sears.com had the highest number of repeat viewers to its registry, the average viewer returned to the site 4.1 times during a research period. Belk.com averaged 3.6 visits, and BedBathandBeyond.com visitors returned 3.1 times. Not all gift-givers are be wedding attendees. Sxty-five percent typically buy gifts for all couples who invite them to a wedding, 30 percent only purchase gifts for weddings they attend. Purchase price disclosed by 60 percent of respondents averaged $26 to $75. A group of 48 percent of respondents indicate they will personally purchase a wedding gift in the next three months. Of those, 43 percent say they will buy online, while 83 percent plan to purchase a gift requested in the bride and groom's gift registry. The survey group was selected from Feedback Research's parent company Claria's GAIN Network. The group consisted of users within the GAIN Network who viewed wedding-related sites, including e-tailers and gift registries. Traffic was recorded and analyzed from March 20 to June 20 of this year. A random sampling of in-market consumers was surveyed to find out how they were shopping and using the Internet for wedding-related activities. print this article | e-mail a colleague ClickZ ClickZ Stats Archives Don't miss the next ClickZ Stats column. The Dr. Newton Chun Award will be granted every other year, funding scholarly investigation and artistic projects of exceptional merit and promise. "The hallmark of Kenyon is the quality of its teaching," said President S. Georgia Nugent. "For our faculty to continue to be effective teachers, they must be encouraged and supported in their own intellectual development. The Dr. Newton Chun Award is a most welcome addition in this quest. I look forward to the diversity of projects this fund will inspire." The College plans to make the first award in the spring of 2005. Preference will be given to projects that could not be accomplished without this additional financial support. The award, totaling approximately $10,000, will underwrite expenses such as travel, materials and equipment, and research-assistant costs. Chun named the award in honor of his father, Newton Chun, a physician who yearned to be an academic. A native of Dubuque, Iowa, Jon Chun attended the University of California at Berkeley as an engineering student and went on to study medicine. As a successful technology entrepreneur, he cofounded SafeWeb, which provides secure remote access into corporate networks using only a Web browser. Chun is now a director at Symantec, the world leader in Internet security, which acquired SafeWeb in October 2003. He is married to Katherine Elkins, Andrew W. Mellon assistant professor of IPHS at Kenyon. Kenyon College. Gambier, Ohio 43022-9623 Phone: 740-427-5000
