Friends, family, and neighbors often share in the excitement by taking a housewarming gift to the new homeowners.
But what should you give? The answer depends partly on how well you know the recipients, and if you have insight into their personal tastes and preferences, their needs and wants.
For your closest friends, housewarming gifts can be personal, humorous, and special, while for new neighbors or acquaintances you may want to make more generic gift choices.
Housewarming gifts are the one type of gift that needn't always be formally gift wrapped. After all, plants, gift baskets, and other large items are difficult and unwieldy to wrap in gift paper. Instead, consider using tulle fabric or netting, clear cellophane, or even just a colorful bow to adorn your gift. Be sure to include a handwritten welcome card, and whenever possible, personally take the gift to the home and officially "warm" it with your good wishes.
Whatever your gift choice, make is something appropriate for you and for the recipients. There's nothing more discouraging than to receive a huge Victorian swan planter when your entire home is black and white contemporary. It's better receive something predictible rather than something inappropriate.
Here are our favorite -- and not so favorite -- gift ideas for housewarmings...
The Good
Give Something Classic
Simple beauty never goes out of style. A silver picture frame, a cut crystal bud vase, or a beautiful clock are objects that can fit into almost any home. Make it special by buying it in your friend's favorite store, or go all out and shop at Tiffany, Neiman Marcus, or other specialty store. For an extra touch, fill the frame with a personal photo, place a rose in the bud vase, or engrave the object with the move-in date.
Add to a Collection
Choose an object that your friends can add to a treasured collection -- things like an antique tin, a white ironstone bowl, or a silver napkin ring are possibilities for some collectors. Then add a little something extra to the gift... perhaps a mini box of truffles inside the tin, some wonderful tea in the ironstone bowl, or a small bouquet of flowers cinched with the napkin ring.
Gift Baskets
Choose a theme appropriate for your recipients and have fun putting together something creative. Just choose a themed container, several appropriate pieces to place inside, and tie it all up in cellophane and a pretty bow. Use package shred or crinkled tissue to cushion the items if necessary.
-- Gardening Bucket with garden tools, gloves, seeds, pruners, and gardening magazines
-- Just Add Water with a vase, stem cutters, floral design book, and a big bunch of fresh flowers
-- Paint Party in a Paint Tray with paint rollers, brushes, drop cloths, tape, 5 in 1 Tool
-- Starter Tool Box with tape measure, hammer, screwdriver, pliers, and assorted nails
-- Picture Hanging Kit with picture hangers and wire, nails, tape measure, level, and plumb line
-- Dinner Kit with a casserole, plates, utensils, paper cups, and a bottle of sparkling cider
-- Emergency Chocolate Kit for incurable chocoholics -- a candy tin or a basket, and a variety of chocolate candy, truffles, cookies, or freshly baked goods made of -- you guessed it -- chocolate !
Make Something Special
Gif the gift of yourself by presenting something you've made. Perhaps a flavored vinegar, shaped topiary, painted welcome sign, fireplace starters, a flower arrangement or an Easy Fruit Arrangment .
Toasting Flutes
Add to their wedding crystal, or choose unique toasting flutes especially for the occasion. Tie the stems with pretty bows, and include a bottle of bubbly to toast your friends in their new home.
Bridal Registry
Newly married couples can be easy to shop for since you may still be able to choose items from their wedding registry. If the registered gifts have all been given, you can look it over for clues to their chosen color scheme and style preference, then make appropriate gift choices that will fit into their decor. Consider placemats to go with their china, an additional setting or two of everyday dishes, or an alternate choice of colored glassware.

Birthday Gift Try to
How to Wrap a Birthday Gift - eHow.com Clear Instructions on How To Do (just about) Everything Web eHow.com Home Family & Relationships Center Family Life How to Wrap a Birthday Gift Try to be as creative as possible when wrapping a birthday gift. Keep the gift recipient's age, likes and dislikes in mind when choosing the colors and types of materials used in your wrappings. Follow these instructions to wrap most gift boxes. Steps: 1. Choose a wrapping paper appropriate to the gift recipient. Is the gift for a child's birthday? Your grandmother's birthday? Does the recipient have a favorite color? There are wrapping papers available to suit any gift recipient. 2. Choose coordinating ribbon, and either purchase a premade bow or make your own. See "How to Tie a Decorative Bow" in Related eHows for instructions. If you decide to make your own bow, purchase additional ribbon. 3. Gather your materials and lay them out on a flat work surface. A kitchen or dining room table works best, but be sure not to scratch the table's surface when cutting the wrapping paper. 4. Use a string or a tape measure to determine the dimensions of your gift box. For a rectangular box, measure around the box as if you were measuring a waist. Add 2 inches to this dimension, and jot down this number. 5. Measure the length of your gift box. Measure the height of the box, multiply that number by two and add the total to the length measurement. Write this number down. 6. Use a ruler or yardstick to cut a piece of wrapping paper to the dimensions calculated in Steps 4 and 5 and place wrapping paper face down on your work surface. 7. Position package, top down, onto paper so that you are able to bring lengthwise edges of the wrapping paper to the middle of the box. Center the gift box. 8. Bring one lengthwise edge of wrapping paper to the center of the box. Secure with tape. Turn the opposite edge of paper under approximately 1 inch and bring this to the center of the box as well. The turned-under edge should overlap the first taped edge. 9. Position box so that one short end is facing you. Grasp left and right edges of wrapping paper and push the sides in so that top and bottom flaps are formed. Make sure that the edges are pushed in as far as they will go without ripping the paper. Secure pushed-in edges to box with tape. 10. Bring upper flap down against the side of the box, making sure that flap is sharply creased at its folds. Secure flap against box with tape. Bring lower flap up against the side of the box. Crease and secure as you did for the upper flap. Repeat for opposite end of box. 11. Position package so that the seamless side is up. Affix ribbon and bow as desired. Tips: Consider using comics or newspaper to wrap your gift; or stamp or paint appropriate designs onto plain white or brown Kraft paper. Choose transparent cellophane tape for your gift-wrapping needs. This will give your package a more tidy appearance than can be achieved with other types of tape. Secure lengthwise edges with tape all along the box length - at the middle and both ends. Use several short pieces of tape rather than one long piece. Use a fabric-lined basket or a drawstring fabric bag to wrap your gift if it will not fit in a box. Warnings: Check the label on any package of gift-wrapping paper to make sure there's enough paper inside to wrap your gift box. If you are wrapping a very large box or several gifts, you may need to purchase more than one package. Don't choose gift-wrapping paper that comes folded into precut squares. It has deep creases, which can give your package a crumpled, untidy appearance. Opt for paper that comes on a tube instead. Don't forget to remove the price tag before wrapping your gift. It is everything I had hoped it would be...and more. I bought it for a birthday present for my husband, and he has already recommended it to 4 business associates. He was very impressed. I will definitely be using you again at Christmas, if not before. Thanks again. Mary Testimonial... Hello! I just recently threw a surprise 60th birthday party for my mom on April 27, 2003. I ordered my mom's favorite candy that she loved growing up and created favors for her party. I created sort of a 50's theme for the party since that was the era of time for her growing up. The favors consisted of an old fashioned ice cream soda glass filled with your candy. On top of the glass I put fluffy cotton and sprayed pink paint on top to represent the cherry and included a hot pink straw. I must say the favors and your candy were a hit! Everyone had so much fun and had such a fun time remembering when they used to eat that candy. It brought back a lot of memories for many of the guests and especially for my mom. I just wanted to say thank you for allowing me to create such a special memory for her and the guests at the party. I will definitely use your company again for other special occasions and I will also recommend everyone to your site.
