Guests generally bring a thoughtful gift to the new homeowners and get a chance to eat, drink and informally tour the new house. Steps: 1. Consider the circumstances of the new homeowners. If they are well established, they probably don't need basics like small kitchen appliances or towels. If they are just starting out, however, these might be appreciated. 2. Bring a gift basket filled with gourmet foods, wine and/or useful items for the house or garden. 3. Consider outdoor needs. A new address plaque, a planter, a personalized doormat or a charming garden bench can all be welcome gifts. For use inside the home, bring a houseplant or indoor herb garden. 4. Give a local travel guide or a subscription to a local magazine or newspaper if the newcomers are from out of the city or state. It's a great way to get them acquainted with the new neighborhood. Maps are also a good idea. 5. Consider a book on interior design, landscaping or architectural styles. A cookbook can also be a great gift. 6. Give a gift certificate for a meal at a local restaurant, or tickets for a local sporting event or concert. A gift certificate for the local home improvement store will also be appreciated. 7. Make sure anything you buy can be exchanged or returned by the homeowners if they decide not to keep it. Tips: Don't feel like you have to spend a lot of money. A basket of homemade cookies or a bottle of wine both make a great gift. Sometimes an offer of help is much appreciated. Give a coupon for a meal to be brought in, help in the yard or a couple of hours of free babysitting. So it rules out the golf stuff, flasks & mugs, or personalized art. Aside from that, it's getting late in the game and I'm still lost for ideas. I'm looking to spend $35-50 on each, and have already looked around for decent tickets to sporting events they'd all enjoy, as well as some of the more normal stuff out there. Trouble is, I want something decent and unique, without being useless for them. Any suggestions out there? Maybe you could put the keychain in a men's trinket box or men's valet that could be engraved (you could check out Things Remembered). I found a nice men's keepsake box for $26 at weddingchannel.com. How about a sports picture, you know like a picture of their favorite football, baseball, or basketball player or team. Even the guys who don't have their own place might like it (I'm assuming they have their own room). Those are easy to find, you can even get them at the mall and they fit within your budget. All guys I know like sports memorabilia. Don't stress too much. I'm sure whatever you decide on will be wonderful. Guys usually aren't too picky anyway (but they sure are hard to shop for). If she knows the gender of the baby, she’s sure to get clothes, especially if she’s having a different sex than her first-born. Here are some tips compiled from several mothers of their favorite second-time baby shower gifts. 1. Diapers, wipes and lotions. This isn’t the most romantic of gifts, but most second-time moms tell us that this is a practical and always-appreciated gift. A package or two of newborn-sized diapers, sensitive skin baby wipes and lotion make a great gift basket! 2. Board Books are always a hit for children. Good sturdy backed board books can survive chewing, drooling and dropping, and are nice for young children of all ages! Check online resources like Epinions (research.epinions.com) to see what brands are recommended for the ages of her children. 8. A Gift for Mom is always a nice and personal touch. A gift basket with self-pampering items like lotions, a nice nightgown, home facial items, etc. will make her feel pretty and appreciated. If you give a gift certificate make it specific, like for a facial or a manicure/pedicure. 9. A fold-up Booster seat is a fabulous gift if she doesn’t already have one. These are travel high chairs but also double as secondary high-chairs at home if she has other little ones who still need a boost – and free up the regular high chair for the new arrival! 10. A Housekeeper Visit. If you can afford an outside housekeeper, give her a gift certificate for them to come and clean her house after the baby arrives. This will help relieve her of some of the drudgery that adds more demands on her time! If you can’t afford an outside housekeeper, consider offering to do this yourself. Bear in mind that like the babysitting, she’ll probably be embarrassed to take you up on this, so you’ll have to call to schedule this after the baby. Don’t take no for an answer, either – find a time that works for her, and just show up ready to work, with all of your own supplies if possible (that way you won’t have to bother her to ask where her broom, vacuum, cleanser, etc. are). Run a couple loads of laundry, clean her bathrooms and kitchen, and give her carpet a good cleaning and she’ll be thankful for life!
