However, if you must buy your spouse an appliance (shudder!), then at least make sure it is something he/she will use and not just take up space in a cabinet. Bob knows better than to buy me any appliances as gifts. 1) Kitchen Appliances Whether it is a bread maker, or a rice cooker, or an electric grill, or a mixer, or some other gadget for the kitchen, please be sure it is something your spouse really yearns for. Bob has been yearning for a new fancy mixer. I just can't bring myself to buying it as a gift. 2) Household Appliances This category includes vacuum cleaners, sewing machines, heaters, air purifiers, air conditioners, irons, ceiling fans, washers, dryers, dishwashers, and humidifiers. Nothing sounds romantic to me at all. 3) Hair Appliances Another category that has no romance to it at all. Think twice about this one. 4) Bath Spa Now this one has some romantic possibilities! The Best Present in the World The BestPresent in the World The following Readers' Theatre script was adapted from "The very best present in the world" written by PenelopeBender. It was rewritten by Pansy Koh Hwee Lin, Kow Hui Meng,Jamunah Rani and Lam May Yuen to suit the Singapore context. Narrator: Today is her mother's birthday and May isvery troubled because she does not have enough money to buy her muma present. May: 75, 80, 85 cents. (Sigh!) This is only enough tobuy the bottlecap of Mummy's favourite Chanel No. 5 perfume.What am I going to do? Narrator: May flips through the New Paper and saw a hugeadvertisement. May: (Reading the newspaper aloud) Guess the number ofCoke cans contest. 12 - 3 p.m. Grand prize: $200. Winner will beannounced at 3:30 p.m. today. Wow! That's just what I need... if only I could win ... Narrator: May went down to Cold Storage to join thecontest. May: What a huge crowd gathering around the contestarea! Wait a minute. Isn't that my classmate, Janice? Narrator: May walked up to Janice. May: Hi, Janice, what are you doing here? Janice: Hi, May! I came to join the contest. May: Me too. Narrator: May collected her prize joyfully. As she walkedout of Cold Storage, she met Janice again at the bus-stop. May: Oh, Janice! I won the grand prize! I'm goingto Takashimaya now to get a present for my mum. It's herbirthday. Janice: (Sadly) I'm very happy for you. May: (Concerned) But, you don't sound very happy. Is anythingwrong? Janice: (Sobbing) My ... my ... mother is very ill at home and shecan't get out of bed. I went to the clinic near my house butDr. Tan would not make house calls unless I pay $200. Butwe've no money. I'm really afraid of losing mum.She's all I have since daddy passed away. May: (In deep thought) Oh, dear! That's terrible. (A shortpause) What do you intend to do? Janice: I don't know. Narrator: May gazed at the prize money in her purse. After deliberatingfor a short while, she pressed the money into Janice'shands. May: Here, take this. Go and get Dr. Tan right away! Janice: But ... but ... you need this for your mum's birthdaypresent. May: Don't worry, it's okay. She'llunderstand. Janice: Oh! Thank you so much! Thank you so much! I'm sure my mumwill pay you back when she gets well. Narrator: Janice rushed back to her mum while May walked home slowly. Sheis happy that she had done a good deed but worried about hermother's birthday present. May: (Dejectedly) What should I do? I still don't have anypresent for Mum's birthday. Guess I'll just make a cardfor her. The card won't mean much without a present but ...it'll have to do. Narrator: That night, at the birthday party, May'sbrother gave their mother a gold necklace and her sister gave hermum a Versace bag. In a similar vein, the Top Flite Golf Trunk Locker ($39.99 at Target) goes in the trunk of the car and carries shoes, hats, jackets, balls, tees and more. For golfers who do a lot of flying, a Golf Travel Bag is a must. If your travelling golfer doesn't have one, they probably could use one. Practice Aids Practice aids and training aids are a dime a dozen (OK, they're actually quite a bit more expensive than a dime a dozen, but we just mean they are ubiquitous). But here are two items that are cheap but sure to be put to good use. AlmostGolf Balls are practice balls that mimic the flight of real golf balls - but are made from a foam material so as to be safe for use around buildings (think backyard practice). They are much more useful than wiffle balls. For a cheap training aid that, used correctly, will be more useful than 95-percent of the gadgets out there, try the On Mark Game Improvement in a Can ($8.95 at TGW.com). It sprays a yellow dye onto the golf clubface so that golfers can track - and work on improving - their points of contact. Rather than simply doing the projects on paper, you can stampthem with fabric paint onto t-shirts or napkins. You can arrange them onpaper and cover with clear contact paper to make placemats. Or you cantrace onto craft foam, cut out and glue to make wall hangings and Christmas treeornaments. Here are some more thoughts that viewers have sent in: I have a home daycare with kids the ages of 0-7. Some christmas gift we have made are. Handprint wreath on burlap with a wooden dowel to make it a banner. I just painted the kids hands green and helped them place it in a circle then I painted their thumb red to make berries. I also took blue felt and painted their feet white and had them stand on the felt then painted their hands white and and placed them out next to the top of their feet. This makes an angel. We also glued fake doll hair on the balls of the feet and wiggle eyes under the hair. We have also traced their hands onto fusible web then fused the hand prints to different types of christmas fabric, then I cut out the handprints and fused them to a piece of Christmas fabric in the shape of a tree with the hands pointing downward. I also made this product a banner with a dowel. Another idea I had is to trace my kids hands out of constructions paper and put it in the center of the plate and on the edge put their name and the date. I think that would make a great Christmas gift for grandparents. One idea that worked very well was to make the child's handprints in dough that is bakeable ( self-hardening ). Put the year and child's name on it along with a hanger on the back. I had a parent call me when she opened the gift on Christmas day, in tears. Said it was the best thing she could have every gotten because although she always wanted to do this, she put it off and had we not done it, her child would have grown up before she did it herself.
