In the first method, a donor makes an outright gift of property, transferring ownership to an institution like Skidmore, and receives a charitable income tax deduction equal to the property's appraised current market value. If the property has appreciated in value, the donor will not incur capital gains tax liability on the increased value. If the property is transferred by will, there may be an estate tax deduction. Skidmore generally sells donated property, and donors often advise the College about how moneys might be applied after the property sale. In the second method, a donor may transfer ownership of property to Skidmore, but retain the right to live in/on the property for life. There is an immediate charitable income tax deduction for a portion of the value of the property. The third option is with a charitable remainder trust . A donor can transfer property to a trust, whereby the trustee sells the property and reinvests the proceeds to provide lifetime income to the donor. When the trust ends, either after the donor's death or after a predetermined number of years, the trust assets become available to Skidmore. Capital gains tax is avoided, and the donor is entitled to an immediate charitable income tax deduction. Finally, there is a "bargain sale" arrangement. In this scenario, the donor sells property, or a part of property, to the College for less than the appraised fair market value. The difference is considered to be a charitable gift, qualifying for a charitable income tax deduction and a portion of capital gains tax avoidance. Birthday Gift Try to
How to Wrap a Birthday Gift - eHow.com Clear Instructions on How To Do (just about) Everything Web eHow.com Home Family & Relationships Center Family Life How to Wrap a Birthday Gift Try to be as creative as possible when wrapping a birthday gift. Keep the gift recipient's age, likes and dislikes in mind when choosing the colors and types of materials used in your wrappings. Follow these instructions to wrap most gift boxes. Steps: 1. Choose a wrapping paper appropriate to the gift recipient. Is the gift for a child's birthday? Your grandmother's birthday? Does the recipient have a favorite color? There are wrapping papers available to suit any gift recipient. 2. Choose coordinating ribbon, and either purchase a premade bow or make your own. See "How to Tie a Decorative Bow" in Related eHows for instructions. If you decide to make your own bow, purchase additional ribbon. 3. Gather your materials and lay them out on a flat work surface. A kitchen or dining room table works best, but be sure not to scratch the table's surface when cutting the wrapping paper. 4. Use a string or a tape measure to determine the dimensions of your gift box. For a rectangular box, measure around the box as if you were measuring a waist. Add 2 inches to this dimension, and jot down this number. 5. Measure the length of your gift box. Measure the height of the box, multiply that number by two and add the total to the length measurement. Write this number down. 6. Use a ruler or yardstick to cut a piece of wrapping paper to the dimensions calculated in Steps 4 and 5 and place wrapping paper face down on your work surface. 7. Position package, top down, onto paper so that you are able to bring lengthwise edges of the wrapping paper to the middle of the box. Center the gift box. 8. Bring one lengthwise edge of wrapping paper to the center of the box. Secure with tape. Turn the opposite edge of paper under approximately 1 inch and bring this to the center of the box as well. The turned-under edge should overlap the first taped edge. 9. Position box so that one short end is facing you. Grasp left and right edges of wrapping paper and push the sides in so that top and bottom flaps are formed. Make sure that the edges are pushed in as far as they will go without ripping the paper. Secure pushed-in edges to box with tape. 10. Bring upper flap down against the side of the box, making sure that flap is sharply creased at its folds. Secure flap against box with tape. Bring lower flap up against the side of the box. Crease and secure as you did for the upper flap. Repeat for opposite end of box. 11. Position package so that the seamless side is up. Affix ribbon and bow as desired. Tips: Consider using comics or newspaper to wrap your gift; or stamp or paint appropriate designs onto plain white or brown Kraft paper. Choose transparent cellophane tape for your gift-wrapping needs. This will give your package a more tidy appearance than can be achieved with other types of tape. Secure lengthwise edges with tape all along the box length - at the middle and both ends. Use several short pieces of tape rather than one long piece. Use a fabric-lined basket or a drawstring fabric bag to wrap your gift if it will not fit in a box. Warnings: Check the label on any package of gift-wrapping paper to make sure there's enough paper inside to wrap your gift box. If you are wrapping a very large box or several gifts, you may need to purchase more than one package. Don't choose gift-wrapping paper that comes folded into precut squares. It has deep creases, which can give your package a crumpled, untidy appearance. Opt for paper that comes on a tube instead. Don't forget to remove the price tag before wrapping your gift. Natick, MA, October 1, 2003 - Smart shoppers can find the perfect gift while saving time and money by shopping online, according to David Steiner, president of AuctionBytes.com.
"Traditionally, this is the time of year that merchants are stocking their stores for the holidays - and online merchants are no different, said Steiner. You can do all of your holiday shopping from the comfort of your home, and avoid the crowds and long lines at the mall."
Large marketplaces like eBay and Amazon have proven to be popular stops for holiday shoppers. But smaller niche sites can also give you the variety and quality you are looking for in a gift. This year online shoppers have a couple of extra tools available to help them find unique gifts on the Web.
Search Aggregators like Google (http://www.froogle.com) and Yahoo! (http://shopping.yahoo.com) have developed shopping search engines. In addition to including large retail sites, the services include many smaller Mom and Pop sites offering a great selection of items, from hand-made jewelry, antiques, to collectibles and crafts. Youll be amazed at some of the things you can find on smaller sites and the prices in many cases are excellent," said Steiner.
For holiday gift-givers, Steiner offers the following online shopping tips:
- If there is a collector in your life, online shopping is ideal for finding that one piece that will complete their collection. And don't worry about whether they already have an item. Collectors like duplicates so they can play with one and save the other, or trade for items missing from their collection. Online antiques malls like Tias (http://www.tias.com), Ruby Lane (http://www.rubylane.com) and GoAntiques (http://www.goantiques.com) offer a great selection.
- An extra set of a hard-to-find place setting or a replacement for a broken saucer or cup in a special pattern is a great gift. Check out sites like Replacements Ltd. (http://www.replacements.com) or eBay (http://www.ebay.com).
- Satisfy hard-to-please family members and friends by buying memorabilia. Consider a vintage movie poster or a celebrity autograph for the people who already have everything. Something that might remind a person of their childhood or a happy time in their lives is a great gift.
- Check out some of the smaller auction sites such as ePier (http://www.epier.com), SellYourItem (http://www.sellyouritem.com) or BidVille (http://www.bidville.com) These sites may have hidden gems that are great deals because theyre not as heavily trafficked as eBay or Amazon.
- A wide range of books exists to satisfy collectors. For example, Miller's Movie Collectibles by Rudy and Barbara Franchi covers all aspects of collecting movie memorabilia with current values, sources, history, terminology and trends. You can buy the collecting-related books online (new or used) on book sites like Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com) and specialty sites like Collector Books (http://www.collectorbooks.com). You can also use a search engine for books, like BookFinder (http://www.bookfinder.com).
- You can find free-shipping deals online, or consider buying multiple items at once to save on shipping costs. Use comparison shopping sites like Shopping.com (http://www.shopping.com) and Yahoo! Shopping (http://shopping.yahoo.com) to look for the best deals.
When buying online, it is important to be a savvy shopper, warns Steiner, especially when buying on marketplaces like eBay. Use a credit card and be skeptical. If someone is offering a deal on eBay or another auction site, and it looks too good to be true, it usually is. "If someone is selling a plasma screen TV for $200, its likely that the item doesnt exist. Dont try and rationalize why its such a good deal just walk away from it," said Steiner. Never, ever wire-transfer money to a seller, Steiner warned. And consider using an escrow service for high-price items, but be aware that there are hoax escrow sites as well be sure to use a legitimate service.
Steiner's Web site AuctionBytes.com has more tips on how to shop wisely on eBay: http://www.auctionbytes.com/cab/abu/y202/m08/abu0077/s03
There's no reason to be a last-minute shopper, get online now. And don't worry if you get something you hate under the tree in December. You can turn around and sell it online! "January is a hot month for online 're-gifting,'" said Steiner. "People are online selling the gifts they dont want or that don't fit, and they're looking for the items they really did want but did not receive."
