Third in the list of most-hated birthday presents is bath salts, followed by decorative plates and tight-fitting clothing. Eight out of 10 Americans (82 percent) said it is sometimes difficult to find an ideal birthday gift for a friend or family member. While the average U.S. family spends $750 per year on birthday presents, half of all birthday gifts are never used. Americans are wasting millions of dollars buying unsuitable birthday gifts which are never used. Even gift vouchers make you look as though you have not gone to any effort to choose an appropriate birthday gift, said Shlomo Shaul, publisher of Star Stories personalized horoscope books. "I got so many scented candles and bath oils one year, I thought my friends were trying to tell me I stunk," said one research participant. The full list is available at: www.star-stories.com I happen to LOVE scented candles, but usually only Yankee Candles, which smell GREAT. I also like bath salts. I do not wear col ogne since I am nursing. Since star stories are trying to sell a product, I am not sure how much faith to put into this story. Still, I have to wonder. Last Christmas, my MIL gave me a scented candle for my present. My SIL, who drew my name in the family exchange, gave me TWO scented candles. My husband gave me two scented candles--my only Christmas Gift from him. What does this say about me? Written by hestiahomeschool . (Link to this entry) This entry has 7 comments: ( Add your own ) Hi, I got your kind e-mail while I was also gone. I was visting my parents and had a great time. I have a lot of catching up to do. I love candles and it does not matter what a person gives me. Also I never expect a present from anyone. All I want from others is friendship. To me that is the best present given. That is why I started a journal in the first place was to meet people and make friends and I sure hope you and I can be good friends. I love your journal and writing style BTW. I will be back to catch up on your life. :) Anita http://edit.journals.aol.com/ ginskia/whatdescribesanitaasan itaasanind Comment from ginskia - 9/7/04 3:45 PM we did dirty santa last Christmas at the in laws.Everyone buys a gift and you draw #'s to pick a gift out.My sil took 3 sets of candles for 3 gifts,1 from her, the dh and her daughter- it was funny cause the men ended up with the candles and they did not want them.Even the women did not want them.I like candles but these had no smell at all- I have a feeling that they will end up being re gifts this year! : ) ~ Anita Comment from apropst1 - 9/6/04 3:05 PM Ya I like scented candels too..have you ever smelled soy candels...I just bought some and they really have a nice scent to them. Exactly what is a "White Elephant Gift Exchange?" A. White Elephant Gift Exchange specifications are set by the group or family involved in the gift exchange. White Elephant Gift rules tend to differ regionally. Sometimes white elephant gift exchanges involve generic gifts suitable for any age with a pre-determined price range. Other times, creativity or "weird-factor" is the only pre-requisite! Occasionally the goal is to find an item that you already own but have no use for, and to pass that "white elephant" onto somebody else via the gift exchange. (If you don't happen to own anything completely useless that you'd like to "re-gift," Aspencountry.com can certainly help you out!) Sometimes the recipient is pre-determined, but other times the gift recipient is drawn from a hat. In any case, the main objective of a White Elephant Gift Exchange is for everyone to have fun! Pass along one of your own family traditions, such as bringing an iron cricket on the hearth for good luck, a wreath to symbolize hospitality, or a guest book to record events and celebrations.
Give the Gift of Memories
Bring a photo album of your special times together. On the last page leave a space for a photo of their new home and write: "To be continued..." This can be an inexpensive gift that will be treasured now and in the future.
Transform the Ordinary
Flowering plants, green plants, plant baskets, or fresh flower arrangements can be a pretty ordinary gift -- or they can be
spectacular
. Choose, make, or order something really lush and gorgeous, decorated with bows, balloons, or ornaments, and placed in a beautiful container.
One Big Beautiful
... take your pick: vase, bowl, basket, cache pot, coffee table book, pitcher, or tray . Most people can use another one of these. Choose simple classic shapes and colors, or make it something special for a current holiday such as a blue bowl decorated with white stars for July 4th or a vase etched with little hearts for a housewarming close to Valentine's Day.
The Bad
Scraggly plants
Never give a plant or floral arrangement that looks like it has seen better days. This can be an additional problem in very hot or very cold weather too, since fresh greens can wilt quickly in temperature extremes. And never give a plant to someone who will have no interest in looking after it.
Pets
Never give something so personal as a pet, unless you know for a fact that this would be a welcome gift. Pets will demand a time and care commitment that many people are too busy to give.
Food
Be careful with food gifts. Candy will be all wrong for someone watching calories, while fresh fruit will be wasted if the recipients have an out of town trip coming up. Only when you know the person well can appropriate food items be chosen that will be welcomed.
Don't Ignore Their Taste
Perhaps you love antiques but your friends love contemporary. Don't force your preferences on them with an unwelcome gift of something only you think they "should" like. Chances are the gift will be a dud. Better to go with something "ordinary" than to strike out completely.
Recycled Gifts
Don't ever (repeat after me) -- don't ever give a gift that you've already received yourself, then rewrapped for someone else. It's tacky, and eventually someone will probably figure out what happened, then everyone will be embarassed.

END CLICKTRADE: CHANGES PROHIBITED WITHOUT PERMISSION -- Formula for Fireproofing Christmas Trees Prolong the Life of Your Tree - Saw off the bottom of the trunk 1-2 inches and use a drill to bore a narrow hole up through the middle of the trunk. Fill the hole with cotton, tightly packed. Put the base in warm water as soon as possible. Warm water will melt the sap and allow the tree to drink more easily. It's been recommended to add one of these to the water as a preservative: a few tablespoons of glycerin, or a few tablespoons of sugar, a few crushed aspirins, or use one of the pre made"tree preserve" mixtures. Make Your Own Christmas Tree Snow Preserving Holly Leaves and Berries Christmas light storage - Wrap your lights around a paper towel tube to store them for next year. They won't tangle up as easily! Christmas ornament/decoration storage - Line egg carton cups with cotton, foam, or tissue paper and store small Christmas tree bulbs and ornaments in each cup. Christmas card recycling - Save Christmas cards and reuse them next year! Try these ideas... Christmas wrapping paper storage - Roll tightly, and stash bits and pieces of wrapping paper into the insides of cardboard tubes - if large enough, use for wrapping small packages next year, OR cut and fold and use for package tags.
