Figure A Figure B Figure C Q : I'm a big gift giver, but even the coolest wrapping paper gets boring after a while. I'm creative and would love suggestions on new gift-wrapping ideas. A : (Debbie Stapley, Ask DIY Crafts expert) There are lots of creative ideas out there, from a new take on tissue paper to a way to wrap a present like a piece of candy. Just follow these directions. Materials for Tie-Dye Tissue Paper: Tissue paper Eyedroppers Food coloring in several colors Cookie sheet Place to hang wet tissue Materials for Designer Lunch Sack: Brown paper sacks Stencils (optional) Fabric scraps Paper-backed adhesive Hole punch Ribbon or raffia Iron Dimensional paint Materials for Hard-Candy Look: Solid wrapping paper Cellophane Various ribbon sizes for candy-wrapper stripes Double-stick tape Materials for Chocolate-Kiss Look: Paper plate Tinfoil Slip of white paper Tie-Dye Tissue Paper : Cover your work surface with old newspapers so that you don't get food coloring all over. Set a folded piece of tissue paper on a cookie sheet. "Paint" the paper by dripping streaks of food coloring from eyedroppers, using a new dropper for each shade ( figure A ). Hang the paper to dry, clothesline-style. Designer Lunch Sack : Use stencils to draw a pattern on the paper side of some paper-backed adhesive ( figure B ), or do it freehand. Iron the adhesive patterns on the back side of the fabric scraps you plan to use, and then trim the fabric to the pattern of the adhesive. Peel off the adhesive paper to reveal the sticky side of the fabric, and then center the fabric cutout on the paper bag. Iron the fabric in place with an iron set on medium -- it takes about five seconds to set. If you like, use dimensional paint to add faux "stitches" around the fabric edges. Also punch two holes in the top of the bag, front and back, so you can thread some ribbon or raffia through to tie in a bow. This looks pretty and will also keep the bag closed. Hard-Candy Wrapper : Wrap the gift in a cylinder shape with plain paper. Using clear tape and ribbon, add some stripes of different widths to the package ( figure C ). Wrap the striped package with clear cellophane, tying the ends hard-candy-style with more ribbon. Chocolate-Kiss Wrapping : Set the gift on an inexpensive paper plate. Set the plate on a sheet of aluminum foil, and then draw the sides up and squeeze them together at the top, so they look like a chocolate kiss. Before you squeeze the top closed, slip in a paper label (like the ones on Hershey's kisses) to serve as the gift tag. More questions for Debbie: Q : I love the way gift bags look when I buy them in stores, but when I make them at home they seem flat and a bit empty. What's the secret? A : If your gift doesn't fill the bag, make it look fuller by wadding up paper or tissue paper in the bottom of the bag. To fill out the top of an open bag, grasp a piece of tissue paper in the center and smooth the ends down a little bit to form a loose cone shape. Then upend it and put it into the bag. You may need several pieces of tissue paper to fill out the top of the bag. Q : I'm giving my sister a camera lens for her birthday, and I'm looking for a unique way to wrap it. Any ideas? A : Why not wrap it in a decorative photo box? That way, the wrapping becomes part of the gift. Q : My bridge club gives gifts, and there's a competition among the ladies to make the gifts stand out. What can I do to win the contest? A : Buy a pretty scarf and wrap the box in it -- tying the four corners knapsack-style. College Gift
Centre College: Gift helps Voltaire scholars polish their understanding of French language, culture Gift helps Voltaire scholars polish their understanding of French language, culture RELEASED: July 28, 2005 DANVILLE, KYCentre College 2005 graduates Kim Bauser and Patrick Malarky couldn't wait to get back to France after their year abroad in Strasbourg. Thanks to the Voltaire Scholars Travel Fundthe brainchild of Charles Vahlkamp , Hazelrigg professor emeritus of Frenchtheir return trips were made a lot easier. "The fund covers travel expenses for a Centre student to return to France. It's a study opportunity that's more intensively language-based than our Strasbourg program," says Vahlkamp, who made a generous contribution to the fund in addition to conceiving it. "Patrick and I both received Voltaire scholarships this past year so that we would be financially able to travel to Strasbourg and work with Dr. [Ken] Keffer [Stodghill Professor of Modern Languages] for a month helping him prepare for his spring semester abroad," says Bauser. "We had originally planned to work as teaching assistants at the linguistic center in Besançon, but when that fell through Dr. Keffer generously offered to let us help him instead. With Dr. Keffer insisting that Patrick and I speak only French for the term, my skill and comfort with the language definitely improved. And, getting to return to a city that I'd already grown to love during my semester abroad my sophomore year reminded me why I had loved it and encouraged me to want to go backwhether for fun or even to work for a year or two. This trip also provided me with time and inspiration as I worked on my French seminar project, a series of short stories (in French of course) about my adventures abroad." Vahlkamp adds, "In recent years, several students who had spent a term in Centre's Strasbourg program were able to return to France for a winter term in Besançon, where we've established a link with a language institute there." The first student who went to Besançon was Whitney Camack. She went on to earn an M.A. in French civilization and literature at the University of Cincinnati, where she is now an adjunct instructor of French. She also teaches at Xavier University. "The impact on our students, observable upon return, has been spectacular," says Vahlkamp about the follow-up trips. "The fact of being on their own and of speaking French almost exclusively allowed for considerable linguistic progress and, more important, a substantial gain in self-confidence." A noted Voltaire scholar, Vahlkamp wrote his dissertation on Voltaire and published scholarly articles in Studies on Voltaire. Vahlkamp notes that Strasbourg has a Voltaire connection as well. The writer and philosopher spent one of his many periods of exile in the Alsace region, where Strasbourg is located. "We're humbled in the French program at Centre to have an emeritus colleague, Charles Vahlkamp, whose enlightenment knows no boundaries of space and time," says Keffer. "Charles is convinced that when our best students become Voltaire Scholars they might one day become scholars of Voltaire!" Richard Trollinger, vice president for college relations, notes that through programs such as the Voltaire Scholars, Centre, where 75 percent of students study abroad, has become a national leader in international study. "What Centre does through its study abroad program to prepare students for life in a global society is truly remarkable," he says. "The Voltaire Scholars Travel Fund has added value to the study abroad program for students majoring in French and who wish to take their study of French language, literature and culture to a new level." Students who would like to take advantage of this opportunity should contact Keffer at 859-238-5233 or keffer@centre.edu . Anyone interested in making a donation to support the Voltaire Scholars should contact Trollinger at 859-238-5209 or trllngr@centre.edu . - end - Founded in 1819, Centre College is ranked among the U.S. News top 50 national liberal arts colleges. I love candles and it does not matter what a person gives me. Also I never expect a present from anyone. All I want from others is friendship. To me that is the best present given. That is why I started a journal in the first place was to meet people and make friends and I sure hope you and I can be good friends. I love your journal and writing style BTW. I will be back to catch up on your life. :) Anita http://edit.journals.aol.com/ ginskia/whatdescribesanitaasan itaasanind Comment from ginskia - 9/7/04 3:45 PM we did dirty santa last Christmas at the in laws.Everyone buys a gift and you draw #'s to pick a gift out.My sil took 3 sets of candles for 3 gifts,1 from her, the dh and her daughter- it was funny cause the men ended up with the candles and they did not want them.Even the women did not want them.I like candles but these had no smell at all- I have a feeling that they will end up being re gifts this year! : ) ~ Anita Comment from apropst1 - 9/6/04 3:05 PM Ya I like scented candels too..have you ever smelled soy candels...I just bought some and they really have a nice scent to them.
