Groomsmen Gifts? | Ask MetaFilter Thursday, September 22, 2005 2:58 PM PST Ask MetaFilter Home MetaFilter MetaTalk Post a new question Search Ask MetaFilter Ask MeFi Archives April 4, 2005 I'm to be married at the end of the month, any suggestions for Groomsmen gifts that are non-ordinary? I've seen the standard knife, cigar, flask, lighter, poker, et all, gift recommendations. I'm looking for some more interesting items that are effervescent while not ephemeral. Right now I'm considering some Airsoft rifles and 2000 rounds for battle, but anything else is certainly welcome. What did you do for your Groomsmen? Price is not an consideration - give me your mind. posted by ix to society & culture at 3:37 PM PST ( wedding gift groomsmen ) The best Groomsmen's gift I have recieved was a nice hi-tech leatherman-like tool. Use it to this day. posted by qwip at 3:42 PM PST on April 4 I gave my best man a fairly expensive wrist watch. (I had a small ceremony, so there were no groomsmen.) posted by crunchland at 4:14 PM PST on April 4 Weird. I've posted this twice in one day: took them all out for a barbershop shave before the wedding. posted by turbodog at 4:23 PM PST on April 4 My wife and I got married in Mexico in Spring 2003. Since we knew we were having a Mexican-themed reception later that summer for all the family and friends who couldn't make it to Mexico with us, we decided to bring back 200 shot glasses as wedding favours. (You can imagine the looks we got at the gift shop where we made our purchase! I'm sure I heard someone say "Gringo Loco" as we walked out.) Slight tangent but we had an ulterior motive to giving out shot glasses. We didn't want to "pass the boot" as some couples do to get cash donations towards a honeymoon. Instead we had our Best Man and Maid of Honour sell shots of tequila and Baja Rosa throughout the night with donations being collected in a sombrero. We made a few pesos from this idea and were even able to go back to Mexico the following year with some of the money. As for groomsmen gifts, everyone in our wedding party (Best Man, Maid-of-Honour, MC) plus my sister and her husband and my wife's brother got a shot glass but, to get a big laugh from the crowd, we also gave them over-sized cocktail glasses. I can't find a photo online but have seen them at Michael's Craft stores, Wal-Mart, Zeller's (Canada only) and Home Outfitters (Canada-only as well I think but there are likely similar stores wherever you are if not in Canuck-land.) posted by Jaybo at 4:37 PM PST on April 4 I found a photo of the oversized glasses we gave our wedding party. If you're not going for a serious, sombre reception (we weren't), a gift like this can be a big hit (I didn't just crop this photo for privacy reasons - these two had a pretty glazed look in the original!) posted by Jaybo at 4:59 PM PST on April 4 We got everyone in our wedding party clocks. We sought out interesting and one of a kind clocks for each person. Another great idea I've seen is artwork. I'm a photographer, and last year a couple bought two prints from my studio to give to members of their wedding party. I thought that was a very sweet gift, as long as you know everyone's taste. posted by SobaFett at 5:00 PM PST on April 4 As a groomsman I received an expensive watch. I gave it back. I stopped wearing watches in high school. The sun comes up, it goes down. At another wedding, I received a Swiss knife. Best present ever. Still have it, though I use the Squirt now as my primary knife. Love the barbershop shave comment, put me down for "events" rather than "items." Unless it's a knife! stab stab posted by user92371 at 5:02 PM PST on April 4 - A nice camera - One of those iPod thingies I hear so much about and/or a set of nice headphones (nice headphones are a great thing) - Watches and Leathermen (Leathermans?) are great ideas - An attractive CD box set (These make great gifts, I find.) - a nice bottle of wine/liquor - take 'em out for a nice fancy meal - tickets to a concert or sporting event Personally, if I were a groomsman, I'd be weirded out to receive any sort of armament, but maybe that's just me. posted by Dr. Wu at 5:04 PM PST on April 4 My brother gave out Maglite flashlights -- the big ones that take 6 D batteries. I use mine a lot and it'll last forever. posted by hydrophonic at 5:07 PM PST on April 4 We went with these , engraved with the name of each groomsman -- written as "Mr. [lastname]" instead of a first name or initials. Turned out really cool. posted by grabbingsand at 5:11 PM PST on April 4 No new ideas here, just some feedback on others' comments.... As an iPod owner, I've got to say that if I were given an iPod shuffle, I'd probably make a point of using it while working out, so I think that's not a bad idea by any means. Also, as a non-smoker, I would keep (and occasionally use, and appreciate) a Zippo lighter if I were given one. On preview, ditto the Maglite. posted by kimota at 5:51 PM PST on April 4 If you're on a lower budget, one of those little LCD flashlights. Much more useful than a maglite IMHO. posted by alms at 5:57 PM PST on April 4 My brother went to his local Harbor Freight and lugged home a half dozen shiny new 24", 10 pound Crescent wrenches. Had them engraved with name, date and stuff. Reasonable price and gag appeal. It'll come in handy if I ever get a bulldozer or tanker ship. posted by klarck at 5:59 PM PST on April 4 Of all the gifts I've been given, the one I appreciate the most is an engraved Swiss-army knife . It's been on my keychain for more than a decade now. Leathermans (the chapless kind, unless you're into that sort of thing) are cool too. posted by bonehead at 6:09 PM PST on April 4 I was a groomsman at gompa's wedding which took place in Alberta-- which, for those who don't know, is like a Canadian version of Texas. So all us groomsmen received fantastically huge silver belt buckles with our initials on them. I'm wearing mine now! So depending on where you're holding the wedding, you could tie the gift/activity into the region... much like Jaybo and his Mexican-themed tequila-filled shot glasses. Also, I was a groomsman at theinsectsarewaiting's wedding, where we all received a great big Swiss Army Knife (like user92371 ) and a leather holder. At that wedding there was also a groomswoman and she lucked out: she got the groomsman's gift (the knife) and also the bridesmaid's gift (silver bracelet.) And also: Congratulations! posted by Fuzzy Monster at 6:16 PM PST on April 4 Whoops-- sorry, bonehead . Somehow I missed your comment on preview. I didn't mean to leave you out of the "we got knives" round-up. posted by Fuzzy Monster at 6:20 PM PST on April 4 STHORDS! posted by Baby_Balrog at 6:31 PM PST on April 4 Engraved pewter steins. Tattoos. A chef's knife. A croquet set. Engraved boulles. A wooden box of silk ties. Cuban-heeled boots - spurs optional. Rod and tackle for trout fishing. A bottle of Grange. Leather jackets. A home gym. Mountain bikes. Ray-ban aviator shades. Bathrobes. A six-shooter. Flying lessons. posted by obiwanwasabi at 6:35 PM PST on April 4 There are some good suggestions here, but I'd just add a note of caution: Don't get a leatherman or a pocket knife or anything like it if any of your groomsmen is going to have to take an airplane home. Many people don't check luggage if they're only going to be gone for a short while, and you can't put things like that in your carry-on or the TSA will take them away (assuming you're in the U.S.). posted by cerebus19 at 7:04 PM PST on April 4 I bought hand carved boxes in India the month before the wedding, line them with cedar and installed hydrometers and humidifier, then ordered mixed sampler sets of cigars and filled the boxes with them. posted by beowulf573 at 8:02 PM PST on April 4 I once received a Klein bottle made of glass. Wow, I didn't know until today that it was so expensive! posted by Aknaton at 12:04 AM PST on April 5 Hip flask posted by IndigoJones at 9:46 AM PST on April 5 When I was in an outdoor wedding in sunny Southern California, the groom gave us matching sunglasses to wear during the ceremony. (SHNS photo by Nancy E. Hill / courtesy Chris Madden Inc.) By Chris Casson Madden Scripps Howard News Service The invitations have arrived in the mail and you probably have a shower to attend before the big day. It's the peak of wedding season across the country, and along with the festivities are the gift decisions we'll be making for the bride and groom. These days the couple can be a young pair just starting out or those entering a second marriage that could include the blending of families and households under one roof. Clearly, finding a special gift depends on the couple's tastes and lifestyle. The tradition of a china registry at a favorite department store will never go out of style, but today people also are coming up with some wonderful, creative alternatives. Similarly, around the country the bridal shower and luncheon are still alive and well, but now we also see his-and-her showers that often have a gift themes, such as home improvement items or kitchen appliances. The Internet also has made for even more alternatives for registries and gift options for friends and family. From Saks Fifth Avenue to Target, department stores are putting couple's gift registries online. So after a few clicks of the mouse and a handy credit card, you can select a gift from a registry and even have it wrapped and shipped. Stores specializing in home decor and accessories also are very popular places to register these days, including such national standards as Williams-Sonoma, JC Penney, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Pottery Barn and Crate & Barrel. Here are some of my ideas for wedding and shower gifts that will enhance any newlywed's home: Gift certificates welcomed: The variety of stores that offer gift certificates can help you stay within a budget and ensure the couple will choose something they want and need for their new home. You can choose from a favorite department store, specialty boutique or even a home improvement center. Timely gifts are a favorite: Whether it's a formal Waterford crystal clock or a funky urban design for the kitchen, clocks are a creative choice for a home. Be sure you know the design style that will work best for the recipients. Pampering gifts for breakfast in bed are a treat: Taking a cue from colors and linen choices mentioned in registries, look for bed accessories. As I have in my own home, consider a "bed desk." These can include features such as flip tops and side storage racks. They're prefect for reading and catching up on letter writing — or for that special breakfast in bed. Framing memories is always a must: You can never go wrong with a beautiful picture frame for that wedding portrait or candid honeymoon photo. These are the visual memories that can last a lifetime, so why not frame them elegantly? Consider a trio of sterling silver frames in varying sizes, or a single large one engraved with the wedding date. If a couple has a more casual lifestyle, photo albums with acid-free paper are also a good choice for storing those treasured pictures. Enhance a tabletop: Take a look at the china patterns that the couple has chosen and you can complement them with accessories. Tablecloths and napkins are an obvious choice, but you can also choose candlesticks or napkin rings that will fit with their color and design scheme. A wonderful vase for fresh flowers is also a classic wedding gift, but look for something a bit different. A ceramic pair can also serve as sculpture in a contemporary living room, or a quintet of small silver bud vases can be used in a variety of ways. Use your creativity and learn a bit about what the bride and groom want in their home, and you'll enjoy the giving as much as they'll enjoy receiving your gift. That said, Taproot are certainly no slouches when it comes to bludgeoning. The band's Smashing Pumpkins -like wall-of-guitar soundscapes, disconcerting staccato rhythms, and vocalist Stephen Richards's vocal assaults are accentuated beyond sanity by Ulrich ( Pantera , Static-X ) Wild's trademark production chops to devastating effect. Eastern accents haunt the nagging choruses of "Again & Again." "Now" showcases the band's seductive light-and-shade dynamism and harmonic sensibility, while the closer "Impact" boasts a merciless, scorching delivery. These guys seem serious about their music, which is refreshing. There is no gimmicks like clown masks or fake b-boy posing. These guys are just about hard "rock & roll", and they excel as musicians. 1.Smile - 7.5/10 2.Again & Again - 9/10 3.Emotional Times - 7/10 4.Now - 8.5/10 5.1 Nite Stand - 9/10 6.Believed - 6.5/10 7.Mentobe - 5.5/10 8.I - 9.5/10 9.Mirror's Reflection - 9/10 10.Dragged Down - 8/10 11.Comback - 7.5/10 12.Impact - 9/10 Total - 96/120 or 8/10 Was this review helpful to you? Yorgey - See all my reviews To me this might be the greatest album ever. Not because they are my favorite band (the tattoo on my arm will prove it though) but for me their lyrics hit home. Their music is not the greatest but good enough to keep you going. The lyrics are what keep me coming back to their 2 albums with my ears craving more. To give you an idea of some things in here like the song "I" for example he says "I hate myself sometimes, I love myself, I need this way of life because it holds me" This is going to appeal to everyone but to some people that are having hard times and need help or guidance this really does the trick. The groups message is the same positive and uplifting giving you reason to go on when there really seems like none. I thank god if there is one that i stumbled on to this group because they have helped me in ways you could never believe. Was this review helpful to you? Already familiar with early demos recorded by the band (very Limp Bizkit-esque, at least they got away from that), I bought this CD the day it came out and was seriously disappointed. Why, do you ask? First of all, the music is very derivative of bands like Deftones and Glassjaw. But, with the guitarist's solid riffs, that is excusable to a certain point. If only Taproot had a different singer, they could still be a pretty good band. However, the real downfall is their HORRIBLY OBNOXIOUS vocalist. The vocals incessantly grate throughout almost every song - Incredibly whiny and incredibly boring. The uninspired vocal performance bleated over the majority of the songs is simply laughable. After saying all of that, I will admit that 'I,' 'Smile,' and 'Again & Again' are good songs. However, three tracks are hardly enough to revive a lifeless album. Was this review helpful to you? These guys are one of the most original bands of their time. I grew up listening to every metal band out there from 1986 on and these guys are great. Crunchy guitar with diverse singing and growling. The samples on Amazon don't even do them justice because this album is a lot harder than the clips they play. Was this review helpful to you? ( Report this ) See all 139 customer reviews... Birthday Present primary math

About Piggy’s Birthday Present home | view cart | top 10 sites | faqs | about us | contact us an engaging language arts and early math program about product standards & skills newsroom request information ordering information printable order form About Piggy’s Birthday Present primary math & language arts Piggy’s Birthday Present uses the timeless activity of dot-to-dot as a format for children to answer mathematics and language arts questions at their skill level. With each click of a correct answer, a portion of a picture is drawn right before their eyes. Once the entire picture is completed, students have the opportunity to color in the picture and place it back on the mural wall. Piggy’s Birthday Present is engaging—not just because the high quality graphics draw students into a magical world...and not just because they become instant artists. Piggy’s Birthday Present is challenging—not just because there are over 50 math and language arts activities...and not just because there are so many treasures to find. Piggy’s Birthday Present is successful because its engaging dot-to-dot format, whimsical environment, and teacher-created activities make building number and language skills fun! Sequenced progression of difficulty Math and language arts materials are presented in a sequenced progression of questions that begins with the simplest of concepts, appropriate for kindergarten children, and gradually becomes more difficult, ending with questions appropriate for second grade. Students first complete the dot to dot, then they get to paint in the picture. When it’s finished, the painting becomes part of a larger mural. Piggy’s Birthday Present keeps students engaged by taking advantage of one of the most important principles in educational psychology—the principle of distributed practice. This learning principle is harnessed systematically in the dot-to-dot activity: children first connect 10 to 20 dots within a picture by answering simple content questions, and then they are given a self regulated break while coloring in a picture. This systematic alternating between content work and art work provides a learn and play , learn and play rhythm that facilitates learning. The best part about Piggy’s Birthday Present is that students set their own pace. If students are experiencing success, they can go straight through all of the exercises and skip the coloring. Or, if studnets need a little more time, they can pause to color in the pictures or even do the same dot-to-dot over again. The opportunity for students to set their own pace increases learning potential. Piggy’s Birthday Present is divided into two realms—one focuses on numbers and number sense, and the other on letters and sounds of the English language. Once children enter the upstairs playroom, they can go down the 1,2,3 slide to play in the math section, or down the A,B,C slide to play in the language arts section. In the upstairs bedroom, student choose between the A,B,C slide, or the 1,2,3 slide. Language arts If children go down the ABC slide, they will find the ABC dot-to-dots. These are language arts activities presented in a series of five large murals, each containing 5-10 dot-to-dot pictures. Within each dot-to-dot picture, children connect dots in response to questions that test their language arts skills over a broad range of concepts including letter recognition and alphabetic sequence. Students then progress through concepts such as letter/sound association, beginning and ending sounds, sight recognition of simple words, spelling, abbreviations, and contractions. Click here to view a chart showing the cognitive framework of language arts skills . Mathematics If children go down the 123 slide, they will find the 123 dot-to-dots. These are set up he same as the ABC side, just using different murals and math content. Math concepts include numeral recognition, number sequence, comparisons of numbers, simple addition, subtraction, and finding the missing addend. Click here to view a chart showing the cognitive framework of mathematical skills .In addition, the numbers in the math dot-to-dot can be heard in several languages — Spanish, French, Chinese (Mandarin), Italian, Japanese, and Indonesian! The first time students slide down the 123 slide they will see this mural. Piggy takes a trip to a farm and meets many new friends: a frog, a cow, a duck, a horse, and even another pig. The easy level teaches students number recognition from 1-10. The medium and hard levels teach students number sequence, 10-20 and 60-100, respectively. Click here to see a skills matrix for the Math Farm Mural. In all, there are more than 2,000 questions dealing with math and language arts that were taken from lesson plans of experienced teachers. When children play with Piggy’s Birthday Present , you can be sure they are practicing skills and concepts that complement your curriculum. Skills summary The Skills Summary feature gives teachers the content description for each mural at the easy, medium, or hard level. Students can work individually or in groups, and student work is always saved and recorded in the Skills Summary after every session.
