Scribner House Contact Our Staff Gift Planning Home STANDARD MAIL 815 North Broadway Saratoga Springs, New York, 12866 GIFT PLANNING PHONE 518-580-5655 E-MAIL CONTACT Gift Planning Gift Planning Life Income Gifts - Charitable Remainder Trust Commonly known by its acronym, CRT, the charitable remainder trust is a valuable estate and financial planning tool that also helps donors fulfill philanthropic objectives. A donor can fund a CRT with cash or securities. The CRT will provide a stream of income to one or more recipients (a donor and spouse, for example) for life or for a fixed period up to 20 years. The trust ends when the income recipient(s) pass away or when the fixed period has ended. The remaining trust assets are then distributed to Skidmore, and other charitable recipients, if named, to be used in a manner determined by the donor when the trust was created. It is also possible to use real estate to fund a CRT. Life income payments can be made two ways: as a percentage of the trust assets as revalued annually (this is known as a unitrust, or CRUT) or by paying a fixed percentage of the original trust principal (this is known as an annuity trust, or CRAT). The unitrust provides a variable payment, while the annuity trust provides a fixed payment. Trusts are usually funded with a minimum of $100,000. Donors usually experience an increase in yield on the assts. Other advantages include an immediate charitable income tax deduction, avoidance of capital gains tax if appreciated assets are used to fund the trust, possible estate tax savings, and the creation of a legacy through your wonderful gift to Skidmore. Many donors use their tax savings to purchase a life insurance policy to replace for their heirs the assets used to fund the CRT. Please call or email to learn more. Bring Legacy to Life! Thrivent Financial and its members are responding in two ways: First, Thrivent Financial has added $5 million for rebuilding areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina to our $100 million Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity alliance, announced on Sept. 8, 2005 . Thrivent Builds is an unprecedented financial, volunteer and advocacy alliance designed to substantially increase Habitats capacity to build affordable housing. Second, we are supplementing our members donations and fund-raising efforts for this recovery. Through the generosity of our members, we expect more than an additional $6 million will be raised to support the survivors of this disaster in their recovery efforts. Individual Member Response Through the Individual Member Response, gifts members make to one of the four eligible organizations will be supplemented $1 for every $2 given, up to $300 per member (e.g., if a member gives $600 to a relief organization, Thrivent Financial will provide that organization with an additional $300.) A Thrivent Financial Hurricane Katrina Individual Member Response Form (PDF, 53K) must accompany the members gift (see form and instructions) (Word, 21K) . All funds raised and contributed through the Individual Member Response will be directed to four eligible recipients: Lutheran Disaster Response , ELCA Domestic Disaster Response , LCMS World Relief/Human Care and WELS Committee on Relief . There couldn't be a better birthday present than walking into her office at 9am and hearing the words "it's negative ". It was the most likely result -- the rape was (physically, at least) non-traumatic so, even though given where I live the chances of my rapist being HIV-positive are about one in four or five, I'd have been unlucky to be infected . I did the whole prophylactic antiretroviral thing anyway -- AZT and 3TC definitely make a person feel like shit -- so my chances of seroconverting were even lower, but it still feels good to have the official word . I still don't know exactly what seroconvert means, even, or quite what the difference is between a virus and a retrovirus . I don't know much about the pharmacological action of any of the drugs I had to take, and why it was a good idea for me to take them. I don't know what it would be like to live with HIV, even as a chronic and controllable disease rather than a death sentence, which it could be for me since I'm (just) rich enough.
