60th Wedding Anniversary Gift Ideas Dear Dr. Dave and Dr. Dee, My parents will be celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. My brother and I want to give them a big party with family, friends, neighbors, and church members, but they don't want one. Should we honor their request, or give them a "surprise"? Also, what would be a good gift? My brother and I want to give a joint gift from both our families. My husband and I can afford to send them on a two-week cruise, but my brother cannot contribute that much. My brother wants us to pay equally. What should we do? Signed, Compromise? Dear Compromise, The 60th wedding anniversary is very special indeed. However, you should honor your parents' request to not have a party, and honor your brother's request to share in a gift for them equally. Instead, have a family celebration or dinner with just the immediate families. Although the 60th wedding anniversary is diamonds, you do not have to get them a gift of diamonds. Any gift for a special birthday is also appropriate for wedding anniversaries. One of the most often cited cherished gifts is a memory photo album composed of photos and special remembrances of their marriage. For example, the photo album could have crystal rhinestones glued on the front to simulate diamonds, and contain something like the following: 1. Photographs of the highlights of their 70 years together. Enlist the help of other family and friends to get copies of photos. Include their wedding photo, photos of children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, friends, vacations, and other special moments over the 70 years. 2. Written tributes: Close family members and friends write a short tribute to your parents and include a funny or touching anecdote. Intersperse these tributes throughout the album. For friends, ask them to include information such as how long they've known one or both of your parents, how they met, and their first impression. 3. You can request a special congratulatory note be sent to your parents from the President of the United States (if a U.S. citizen). Be sure and request this well in advance (at least 6 weeks). See www.whitehouse.gov 4. Historic news headlines, popular songs, and movies on the day of their wedding. Greeting card shops often have these "time capsule" sheets that can be printed out. Or, you can design your own using info from the Internet or from websites. Depending on your parents' interests and limitations, other gift ideas could be an amplified, large button telephone or a computer so that they could email all family members.

Annual Funds Endowed Funds Current Use Gifts Deferred Gifts Annual Funds Annual funds are current-use financial resources used to support priority programs not covered through state funding. Many donors choose to designate their annual gifts to the College's Fund for Excellence. The Dean of the College annually determines the priorities for this fund. In recent years it has supported our minority student recruitment efforts, enriched student leadership programs, and enhanced technology training for student and faculty. Annual fund dollars can also be designated to the William Chandler Bagley Scholars Program. Entirely funded through private gifts, this program enables us to provide merit-based scholarships and fellowships to some of our most talented students. During 2002-2003 academic year, 37 students directly benefited from this program. Wherever you designate your annual fund gift, you can be assured that your donation is going directly to support the research, teaching and service missions of the College of Education. With no minimum gift, this is a great way to begin your investing in the College of Education. Endowed Funds Endowed funds are gifts large enough to generate yearly income. The principal remains intact through investment and only the interest is used. Endowed funds are attractive because they guarantee that financial resources will be available for years to come. Generally, endowed funds are named in recognition of the donor or donors. The size of the donation to establish a permanently endowed fund is determined by the purpose of the gift (i.e. scholarship, professorship, etc...) as well as by current financial market considerations. To learn more about creating an endowed fund you can visit the University of Illinois Foundation web site or contact one of the College gift officers. Current Use Gifts Current use gifts can be put to use by the College immediately upon receipt from the donor. Examples might include a newly endowed scholarship, a one-time gift to purchase new computers for one of our departments, or a donation to one of our Annual Funds. When you hear the words current use, it basically means a gift that can be put into immediate action. Deferred Gifts Deferred gifts are ones that are designed to be put to use at a future time. While these gift agreements may be made at any time, the execution schedule of the donation is the result of careful planning that integrates the donor's charitable gift into his or her overall financial, tax, and estate planning objectives in order to maximize the benefits for both the donor and the College.
