Birthday Gift Try to

How to Wrap a Birthday Gift - eHow.com Clear Instructions on How To Do (just about) Everything Web eHow.com Home Family & Relationships Center Family Life How to Wrap a Birthday Gift Try to be as creative as possible when wrapping a birthday gift. Keep the gift recipient's age, likes and dislikes in mind when choosing the colors and types of materials used in your wrappings. Follow these instructions to wrap most gift boxes. Steps: 1. Choose a wrapping paper appropriate to the gift recipient. Is the gift for a child's birthday? Your grandmother's birthday? Does the recipient have a favorite color? There are wrapping papers available to suit any gift recipient. 2. Choose coordinating ribbon, and either purchase a premade bow or make your own. See "How to Tie a Decorative Bow" in Related eHows for instructions. If you decide to make your own bow, purchase additional ribbon. 3. Gather your materials and lay them out on a flat work surface. A kitchen or dining room table works best, but be sure not to scratch the table's surface when cutting the wrapping paper. 4. Use a string or a tape measure to determine the dimensions of your gift box. For a rectangular box, measure around the box as if you were measuring a waist. Add 2 inches to this dimension, and jot down this number. 5. Measure the length of your gift box. Measure the height of the box, multiply that number by two and add the total to the length measurement. Write this number down. 6. Use a ruler or yardstick to cut a piece of wrapping paper to the dimensions calculated in Steps 4 and 5 and place wrapping paper face down on your work surface. 7. Position package, top down, onto paper so that you are able to bring lengthwise edges of the wrapping paper to the middle of the box. Center the gift box. 8. Bring one lengthwise edge of wrapping paper to the center of the box. Secure with tape. Turn the opposite edge of paper under approximately 1 inch and bring this to the center of the box as well. The turned-under edge should overlap the first taped edge. 9. Position box so that one short end is facing you. Grasp left and right edges of wrapping paper and push the sides in so that top and bottom flaps are formed. Make sure that the edges are pushed in as far as they will go without ripping the paper. Secure pushed-in edges to box with tape. 10. Bring upper flap down against the side of the box, making sure that flap is sharply creased at its folds. Secure flap against box with tape. Bring lower flap up against the side of the box. Crease and secure as you did for the upper flap. Repeat for opposite end of box. 11. Position package so that the seamless side is up. Affix ribbon and bow as desired. Tips: Consider using comics or newspaper to wrap your gift; or stamp or paint appropriate designs onto plain white or brown Kraft paper. Choose transparent cellophane tape for your gift-wrapping needs. This will give your package a more tidy appearance than can be achieved with other types of tape. Secure lengthwise edges with tape all along the box length - at the middle and both ends. Use several short pieces of tape rather than one long piece. Use a fabric-lined basket or a drawstring fabric bag to wrap your gift if it will not fit in a box. Warnings: Check the label on any package of gift-wrapping paper to make sure there's enough paper inside to wrap your gift box. If you are wrapping a very large box or several gifts, you may need to purchase more than one package. Don't choose gift-wrapping paper that comes folded into precut squares. It has deep creases, which can give your package a crumpled, untidy appearance. Opt for paper that comes on a tube instead. Don't forget to remove the price tag before wrapping your gift. Figure A Figure B Figure C Figure D Figure E Figure F Figure G Figure H Figure I Figure J Figure K Figure L Have you ever wanted to make gift-wrap yourself to match the colors and design of the gift you're giving? Debbie Stapley, host of HGTV's Crafts and Company , shows how to make unique, inexpensive wrapping paper. Dyed Tissue Paper Materials: Tissue paper (or paper towels, rice paper) Food coloring Bowls Water Measuring spoons Place 2 tablespoons of water in each of three bowls. Squeeze two generous squirts of a different food coloring into each bowl. Swirl to mix the water and food coloring. Fold a piece of tissue paper in half. Then fold it in half again, creating quarters. Fold the quartered paper diagonally twice ( figure A ). Then fold the center corner at right angles to the rest of the paper ( figure B ). Or fold the paper accordion style ( figure C ). Fold the two smaller ends at right angles to create corners ( figure D ). Dip each of the corners into a different food-color-and-water mixture ( figure E ). Carefully unfold the tissue paper: it's fragile when wet. Hang it up to dry. Wrap a package with the tissue paper. The designs will be brightly colored and random ( figure F ). Tip: Use white tissue paper to get truer colors in the design ( figure G ). Decorated Brown-Paper Bags Materials: Brown-paper grocery bag Paper-backed iron-on adhesive Fabric Pattern from a coloring book or drawn freehand Paper Pencil Scissors Iron Dimensional paint Rickrack, ribbon or raffia Tissue paper Select a pattern from a coloring book, or draw a design freehand. Debbie used a star. Cut out a paper pattern of the desired design. Trace the design onto the paper-backed iron-on adhesive. Cut out the design. Iron the adhesive design onto the back of the fabric. Cut out. Peel the backing away from the adhesive, and iron the fabric design to the front of a paper bag. Outline the design with dimensional paint. Tie rickrack or ribbon around the top of the paper bag to gather. Stuff tissue paper inside the bag ( figure H ). Here are some other looks: Select fabric with a design, cut out one of the motifs, and glue it onto the bag. Tie raffia around the top of the bag. Stuff the inside of the bag with tissue paper and more raffia ( figure I ). Wrap a package with a map. Cut narrow strips from the map paper. Tie grosgrain ribbon around the center of a bunch of the strips, and tie them to the top of the package. Create a curly bow from map strips by pulling the blade of a scissors under each strip. Leave some of the strips straight for variety. Make loops from the ribbon ends, and hot-glue them to the top of the package ( figure J ). Tie nylon tulle around a package instead of ribbon. Wrap a package in colorful comics from the Sunday newspaper. Cut wavy strips from solid-color gift-wrap to tape around the package in place of ribbon ( figure K ). Rubber-stamp plain brown paper, and wrap the package. Tie on a colorful bow ( figure L ). Glue doilies onto solid-color gift-wrapping paper. Tie a colorful scarf around a gift box, and knot the ends together. Punch decorative shapes in a brown-paper bag. Stuff it with colorful tissue paper that can be seen through the punched holes. Groomsmen Gifts? | Ask MetaFilter Thursday, September 22, 2005 2:58 PM PST Ask MetaFilter Home MetaFilter MetaTalk Post a new question Search Ask MetaFilter Ask MeFi Archives April 4, 2005 I'm to be married at the end of the month, any suggestions for Groomsmen gifts that are non-ordinary? I've seen the standard knife, cigar, flask, lighter, poker, et all, gift recommendations. I'm looking for some more interesting items that are effervescent while not ephemeral. Right now I'm considering some Airsoft rifles and 2000 rounds for battle, but anything else is certainly welcome. What did you do for your Groomsmen? Price is not an consideration - give me your mind. posted by ix to society & culture at 3:37 PM PST ( wedding gift groomsmen ) The best Groomsmen's gift I have recieved was a nice hi-tech leatherman-like tool. Use it to this day. posted by qwip at 3:42 PM PST on April 4 I gave my best man a fairly expensive wrist watch. (I had a small ceremony, so there were no groomsmen.) posted by crunchland at 4:14 PM PST on April 4 Weird. I've posted this twice in one day: took them all out for a barbershop shave before the wedding. posted by turbodog at 4:23 PM PST on April 4 My wife and I got married in Mexico in Spring 2003. Since we knew we were having a Mexican-themed reception later that summer for all the family and friends who couldn't make it to Mexico with us, we decided to bring back 200 shot glasses as wedding favours. (You can imagine the looks we got at the gift shop where we made our purchase! I'm sure I heard someone say "Gringo Loco" as we walked out.) Slight tangent but we had an ulterior motive to giving out shot glasses. We didn't want to "pass the boot" as some couples do to get cash donations towards a honeymoon. Instead we had our Best Man and Maid of Honour sell shots of tequila and Baja Rosa throughout the night with donations being collected in a sombrero. We made a few pesos from this idea and were even able to go back to Mexico the following year with some of the money. As for groomsmen gifts, everyone in our wedding party (Best Man, Maid-of-Honour, MC) plus my sister and her husband and my wife's brother got a shot glass but, to get a big laugh from the crowd, we also gave them over-sized cocktail glasses. I can't find a photo online but have seen them at Michael's Craft stores, Wal-Mart, Zeller's (Canada only) and Home Outfitters (Canada-only as well I think but there are likely similar stores wherever you are if not in Canuck-land.) posted by Jaybo at 4:37 PM PST on April 4 I found a photo of the oversized glasses we gave our wedding party. If you're not going for a serious, sombre reception (we weren't), a gift like this can be a big hit (I didn't just crop this photo for privacy reasons - these two had a pretty glazed look in the original!) posted by Jaybo at 4:59 PM PST on April 4 We got everyone in our wedding party clocks. We sought out interesting and one of a kind clocks for each person. Another great idea I've seen is artwork. I'm a photographer, and last year a couple bought two prints from my studio to give to members of their wedding party. I thought that was a very sweet gift, as long as you know everyone's taste. posted by SobaFett at 5:00 PM PST on April 4 As a groomsman I received an expensive watch. I gave it back. I stopped wearing watches in high school. The sun comes up, it goes down. At another wedding, I received a Swiss knife. Best present ever. Still have it, though I use the Squirt now as my primary knife. Love the barbershop shave comment, put me down for "events" rather than "items." Unless it's a knife! stab stab posted by user92371 at 5:02 PM PST on April 4 - A nice camera - One of those iPod thingies I hear so much about and/or a set of nice headphones (nice headphones are a great thing) - Watches and Leathermen (Leathermans?) are great ideas - An attractive CD box set (These make great gifts, I find.) - a nice bottle of wine/liquor - take 'em out for a nice fancy meal - tickets to a concert or sporting event Personally, if I were a groomsman, I'd be weirded out to receive any sort of armament, but maybe that's just me. posted by Dr. Wu at 5:04 PM PST on April 4 My brother gave out Maglite flashlights -- the big ones that take 6 D batteries. I use mine a lot and it'll last forever. posted by hydrophonic at 5:07 PM PST on April 4 We went with these , engraved with the name of each groomsman -- written as "Mr. [lastname]" instead of a first name or initials. Turned out really cool. posted by grabbingsand at 5:11 PM PST on April 4 No new ideas here, just some feedback on others' comments.... As an iPod owner, I've got to say that if I were given an iPod shuffle, I'd probably make a point of using it while working out, so I think that's not a bad idea by any means. Also, as a non-smoker, I would keep (and occasionally use, and appreciate) a Zippo lighter if I were given one. On preview, ditto the Maglite. posted by kimota at 5:51 PM PST on April 4 If you're on a lower budget, one of those little LCD flashlights. Much more useful than a maglite IMHO. posted by alms at 5:57 PM PST on April 4 My brother went to his local Harbor Freight and lugged home a half dozen shiny new 24", 10 pound Crescent wrenches. Had them engraved with name, date and stuff. Reasonable price and gag appeal. It'll come in handy if I ever get a bulldozer or tanker ship. posted by klarck at 5:59 PM PST on April 4 Of all the gifts I've been given, the one I appreciate the most is an engraved Swiss-army knife . It's been on my keychain for more than a decade now. Leathermans (the chapless kind, unless you're into that sort of thing) are cool too. posted by bonehead at 6:09 PM PST on April 4 I was a groomsman at gompa's wedding which took place in Alberta-- which, for those who don't know, is like a Canadian version of Texas. So all us groomsmen received fantastically huge silver belt buckles with our initials on them. I'm wearing mine now! So depending on where you're holding the wedding, you could tie the gift/activity into the region... much like Jaybo and his Mexican-themed tequila-filled shot glasses. Also, I was a groomsman at theinsectsarewaiting's wedding, where we all received a great big Swiss Army Knife (like user92371 ) and a leather holder. At that wedding there was also a groomswoman and she lucked out: she got the groomsman's gift (the knife) and also the bridesmaid's gift (silver bracelet.) And also: Congratulations! posted by Fuzzy Monster at 6:16 PM PST on April 4 Whoops-- sorry, bonehead . Somehow I missed your comment on preview. I didn't mean to leave you out of the "we got knives" round-up. posted by Fuzzy Monster at 6:20 PM PST on April 4 STHORDS! posted by Baby_Balrog at 6:31 PM PST on April 4 Engraved pewter steins. Tattoos. A chef's knife. A croquet set. Engraved boulles. A wooden box of silk ties. Cuban-heeled boots - spurs optional. Rod and tackle for trout fishing. A bottle of Grange. Leather jackets. A home gym. Mountain bikes. Ray-ban aviator shades. Bathrobes. A six-shooter. Flying lessons. posted by obiwanwasabi at 6:35 PM PST on April 4 There are some good suggestions here, but I'd just add a note of caution: Don't get a leatherman or a pocket knife or anything like it if any of your groomsmen is going to have to take an airplane home. Many people don't check luggage if they're only going to be gone for a short while, and you can't put things like that in your carry-on or the TSA will take them away (assuming you're in the U.S.). posted by cerebus19 at 7:04 PM PST on April 4 I bought hand carved boxes in India the month before the wedding, line them with cedar and installed hydrometers and humidifier, then ordered mixed sampler sets of cigars and filled the boxes with them. posted by beowulf573 at 8:02 PM PST on April 4 I once received a Klein bottle made of glass. Wow, I didn't know until today that it was so expensive! posted by Aknaton at 12:04 AM PST on April 5 Hip flask posted by IndigoJones at 9:46 AM PST on April 5 When I was in an outdoor wedding in sunny Southern California, the groom gave us matching sunglasses to wear during the ceremony.
